Warpriests, and why clerics make them cry

Class Discussion

I do not post often on this forum but when I do it is to post about things that I have not seen posted about yet on this forum.

My biggest grievance with this class is that it has class features that it can already get that are part of its spell list. Sacred weapon and Sacred Armor are huge trap options for characters since they can be replicated with spells greater magic weapon, magic vestments and other spells that can add affects to your weapons. Sure you can go over your base weapon enhancement for a few rounds but the +5 max on it makes it worth less except in special circumstances where you don't have your gear and even then you can still copy this with spells.

Since the cleric spell list already lets you spam enhancement bonuses sacred weapon and sacred armor would work much better if they were replaced with the fighter ability Armor Training and Weapon Training.

The rest I don't feel as strongly about since this class is worse than a cleric and better than a fighter so it is sort of balanced.

This is the first time I read a post actually wanting to replace a hybrid's class feature with something that is more like the parent class feature.

And I don't understand what your problem with it is. Sure you can achieve similar effects with magic weapon/vestment spells, but those A) don't stack with an already enchanted weapon's enhancement, B) need to be prepared from pretty high slots of your list of spells per day (3 and 4 are around half of your maximum spell level) and C) require a standard action to activate, whereas sacred weapon/armor is a swift action.

Sacred Weapon and armor might only stack to a maximum of +5, but that is only the enhancement bonus. You can add the rest in special enchantments, like keen, flaming, brilliant energy, energy resistance, glamered, spell resistance etc.

And on top of it all you can stack sacred weapon/armor onto a magic weapon/vestment spell as well.

I think the ability is fine the way it is. Perhaps sacred weapon should have a tad more time per day but it works just dandy.

I think ignominious is right. Weapon and armor training would be much better for the warpriest.

Hold your judgement. Lots of changes are happpening real soon as evident by the fact that Jason Bulmahn locked all the playtest class threads. As what you say now may well be contradicted if a hybrid class gets reworked to be better and does not have the same faults you knew of.
