Build me a Taldan Duke

Advice

I have an NPC request. What do you suggest for an Archduke, the Prefect of the Ridonport provice. Im seeing a fairly powerful noble, self absorbed and narcissistic but with a little bit should any actually tangle with him. He utilizes a number of lesser nobles to actually run his Prefecture and isnt the typical Boss Bad guy, but could cause issues for the PCs if they tick off the wrong people.

Or is this guy to high up to worry about? Its not likely he will ever be involved in combat but should I still have some stats worked up?

By the way, his name is ArchDuke Vyncent Peredur, Prefect of the Vismarch.

Should it be something as simple as Aristocrat 6/Warrior 2 or should someone of that status be more impressive?

  • If the's an archduke, he should rule an archduchy.
  • If he's a prefect, he should run a prefecture.
  • A march is governed by a marquis.

Also: go with NPC ranks. Keep track of whichever abilities he actually uses, and you can always shift other things around as needed later.

The Vismarch is an Archduchy, Ridonport being the seat of power there. As to Prefectures, they are mentioned in the sourcebooks but then a host of other nobility and land owners are eluded to as well. Im assuming the Prefectures are subdivided into duchies, counties, baronies and the like. The Prefect is an administrative term used but noble titles may vary.

Its hard to make a direct correlation between Taldan political structure and anything historical. Its all over the place. Besides, if one goes with the strictly Byzantine flavor, most players will never recognize it... and it... well just sounds silly. (vestarches, anthypatos etc.)

LOL @ VRMH

As for whether yourNPC should have PC levels, has he ever been a professional soldier? Even so maybe fighter levels. Aristocrat seems pretty appropriate as there isn't really a PC equivalent.

DOn't worry about multiple titles, this is Taldor we're talking about.

If he has PC levels, Cavalier is a natural with Taldor's Cataphracts. Order of the Cockatrice seems to fit the persona.

I'd not worry about statting him initially, though. If your players are smart enough to not attack the guy with all the guards, you should be find keeping him abstract until they're higher levels.

Thanks guys

Plan ahead in case your players do try to assassinate this guy and happen to succeed. Give him several sons spread around Taldor and the Inner Sea. The archduke is a prolific writer of letters to his sons keeping them up to date on events, problems, and potential threats. Perhaps the PCs accidentally intercept one of these letters while trying to stop a vassal.

In this way if they kill the archduke then his son's are not only up to speed but spread out enough that they are very difficult to kill all at once. Retribution will be swift.
