Role-playing Oriented Adventures for Reign of Winter

Reign of Winter

Liberty's Edge

Hello, I am still a relatively new gamemaster and I asked my players what they expected out of my game, aside from the Adventure Path, one of my players asked for more of a role-playing oriented game. So, I am wondering if there are any role-playing adventures ( strictly role-playing, not too much action ). He doesn't like the min/max aspect of Pathfinder and does not do it too well.

Any suggestions?

Reign of Winter is pretty good for roleplaying, some other possibilities are Wrath of the Righteous, at least the first adventure seems to be rather interactive. other good choices are Jade Regent, Skull & Shackles or Serpent's Skull.

but really this is pathfinder so any adventure path you pick will have good "roleplaying" and interactivity within the environment:)

Shattered Star is a series of old-school-ish dungeon crawls, so that's probably not where you want to go. Other than that, the suggestions above are good. If they don't want to min-max their characters and want to play sub-optimal builds for roleplaying, try giving them a higher point buy (20 or 25) and more traits for background.

you'd be surprised with Shattered Star! there are plenty of chances for roleplaying

I have it, and I've read it, and yes there are, but it's a series of "Go here, get the Maguffin, fight bad guys on the way" missions. Maybe not what the OP is interested in.

In my experience the best role playing AP's are: Skulls and Shackles, , Kingmaker, Curse of the Crimson Throne.

I'd put Serpent Skull, Rise of the Runelords, Reign of Winter Carrion Crown, as role playing situations at times throughout the AP's

For Shattered Star I only have experience with book 1 and since 75% of it is a dungeon crawl it has far less role playing moments then the others.

Even in dungeons (especially pathfinder's dungeons) there is always oppurtunities for roleplaying, so dont discount Shattered Star so easily, especially in books 2 and onward there is plenty of chances(tho even in first book there is opportunities) but to answer again the OPs question, reign of winter has plenty of roleplaying

I'm gonna second Kingmaker and Skull and Shackles, though I'd have to recommend adding quite a bit of side material to S+S to make it more pirate-y. Check out Redcelt's "GoT in Kingmaker" thread for RP opportunities in that campaign as well.

Reign of Winter has some good RP opportunities, but they're strung together with some uninspiring action scenes in the first book and a half. Once you hit the middle of book two, it really picks up, and the RP opportunities are everywhere, but all of the APs have lots of combat.

You can add as much or as little role playing in the adventure path as you like. Not every encounter with stats needs to be a battle, yes there are some where there is no choice but there are also a lot of them where you can role play your way through it.

The Snow of Summer Ideas:

I am running Reign of Winter right now, I added a bunch of role playing into it, stuff that does not come with the mod. For example beginning in Heldren, you can run a whole session in the town with out a combat. The same goes for Waldsby in Irrisen.

The Talking Stag, my party did not attack him, since all he really wanted is information. He fooled them into believing he was a protector of the woods, got all the info and then went on his way to report to Teb.

Tennypenny in the lodge, the party let her go with out fight since she want no part of it.

The first meeting with Nadya after saving her from the Mantis.....

There are tons of them....just remember you do not always have to fight if there are stats given. Stats for Bluff, Sense Motive ad Diplomacy work for NPC's also.

One point you may want to make to the player is role playing lies heavily on the party. Players have to step up and role play. The opportunity is always there. Even in combat, role play how your pc conducts themselves. That may be doing something other than the best tactics.

As an example I have dual weilding Dwarven Barbarian in the party, his best tactic is to wade in and use his flails. He rarely does that, his pc is always trying out the new item he picked up, or taking time to utilize noisy non-combat items to announce his presence on the battlefield.

Choosing to turn the game into a min-max tactical exercise is the choice of the party more so than the GM (unless the GM refuses to play any other way). The players need to walk around town, talk to the NPC's they encounter, come up with their own little side quests and adventures (getting cheese and sausage for breakfast, etc..). I've forced more than one party of hack and slashers towards distraction with these options as a player.

If you as the GM want to aid that just be ready to run with what the players throw out there. Also remember that you control the encounter, and can provide a negotiation out of any situation. Just make sure the players realize that if they want to role play they have to put in the effort.
