I partly say yes. I devote time to this hobby, i invest emotions and concentration and nerves.

So it ticks me off when someone says "relax it's just a game" and then proceeds to scream at the TV for an hour while watching baseball or some other sport.

Its not "just a game" its so much more.

it is just a game.

However, the meaning of "just a game" has tremendous weight with me.

It may be a game but my time is not a joke.

"It's just a game" is a derisive comment meant to belittle someone for getting upset about things. And yes, given that sports fans regularly burn down the place, destroy cars and wreck stadiums when they win let alone when they don't, saying something is just a game sort of loses any real meaning to me.

Usually when people say that, I can safely ignore the next few sentences out of their mouth. It's the gaming equivalent of "I'm not racist, but .." or "No offense, but .."

I wouldn't call it just a game. I would call it a game. Maybe I'm arguing semantics, but i find the just part derogatory.

I agree. I find that the more I have invested in a session - as GM or player - the more it cheeses me off when everyone else is goofing off. I have had people say to me, after a session of gaming that I spent HOURS prepping for, that they just like to play for the jokes. Awesome. Glad I prepped so hard. (EDIT: AND spent my own, limited money on!)

This IS, however, a social game and my buddies and I enjoy each other's company. Any number of topics come up in the course of a game night and it's a good time.

I can't stand goofing off.

No, it's not serious business at all.

But it doesn't have to be serious business to get peeved when one person is holding up the rest of the game goofing around.

But then again, some of the most fun I've had is random conversations that pop up mid-game, derailing everything for 5 minutes or more. And that's what it's all about, isn't it? Having fun with some people you know.

So it really depends on the circumstance. Are the distractions fun, or are they annoying or inappropriate?

Serious business

I'm aware.

I said no.

Am I occasionally going to take it way too seriously? Yes.

Is it the norm? No.

"It may be a game, but my time is not a joke."
BiggDawg sums up my position here. A lousy game makes one just as miserable as a lousy vacation, or any other lousy experience.

"Just a game" is something I fire up on the computer to relax by shooting at things.

I don't (usually - occasional just-for-fun one-shots are another matter) relax playing RPGs. I invest time, effort, and work. I also enjoy the hell out of the result.

Very.

Uh, let's see... as I have, to date, spent thiry-two years -- the vast majority of my life -- playing various tabletop role-playing games, the answer, for me, is a resounding "yes, it's serious business! -- You gonna roll that initiative, or were you just gonna stand there?"

:)

OK, so maybe "serious" isn't quite the proper word. But gaming is a significant business in my life. And, yeah, I'd be annoyed with the "just a game" comment. But I'm easily annoyed, so take it with a grain of Lot's wife and consider the source.
