Just a Question on Fan Fiction

Paizo General Discussion

So this may sound odd but I was wondering if I could post a text based roleplay based around Pathfinder. It would be just me doing it and controlling an adventuring party as they travel through dungeons, wilderness, and even take on a few odd jobs. The party would consist of all Half-Orcs seeking fame as a way to prove to the parts of the world ravaged by Orcs that Half-Orcs are much more than monsters and that they deserve more than begrudging respect. This would not have any impact o nthe Pathfinder world outside of the roleplay/story. OS I was just wondering if it would be ok for me to post the roleplay/story here as i write it? I'm just curious if it would be interesting enough xD

If you are trying to write a creative work that uses Pathfinder or WoTC copyrighted and/or trademarked content, you will need their permission or you run the risk of being shut down if they don't like it.

Argh, thus is the plight of many a writer! Well, shouldn't bee too hard to their permission...well aside from trying to glorify the Half-Orcs in a game where they are one of the less popular races. But who would I go to to ask for such permissions? And I'll probably use almost all of the info Pathfinder has one Half-Orcs, just love the history of Orcs too much to not use it somewhere.

I'm pretty sure you can write whatever you want as long as you don't make a profit from it. People may not like it if, say, you give all the elves lazer vision, but do what you will.

You might find it useful to look into Paizo's community use policy. From what you've said, I'm assuming you are looking at utilising some of their Intellectual Property and this license may help you (provided its not for any financial reward, etcetera).

That's not really about posting such fiction here on the forums (fwiw, I think The campaign journals sub forum would be the best place for that). But I'm pretty sure they own everything you post here anyway.

It is a common belief that it is necessary to profit (or at least attempt to profit) from use before it runs afoul of copyright or trademark laws.

But that belief is dead wrong. It has nothing to do with whether you profit. It has to do with whether or not you are using something that is owned by someone else in a manner they do not approve of.

This. Always, primarily, this.

And in the case of Pathfinder IP, also this.

The community use policy, specifically, appears to give you the legal permission required in order to "descriptively reference" certain Paizo-owned trademarks such as character and place names from the Golarion setting, as long as you comply with the terms of that policy (which include not charging or using your work for commercial purposes, registering your work with them in the requested manner, and making clear in your work that Paizo own those trademarks.)

If you can write things that people will pay to read, then stop, STOP, trying to write fan fiction, get an agent, and publish your own original works.

Yeah, cause published writers never write fan-fiction.

Alternatively you could simply... not utilize Golarion-specific material.

The most recognizable and relatable elements (fighters, wizards, half-orcs) are not Paizo's property are are concepts in the public domain. Come up with your own towns, religions, and organizations inspired by your PF adventures and you suddenly have total creative control.

Ultimately I just don't get fanfiction.

I could write a novel based on the last post, easily.

If you really want to write fanfiction, writing painfully bad Twilight fanfiction seems to be the way to go...

Whoa, this sparked a conversation when i slept but according to James Jacob as long as I don't sell it I can write it and as I never intended to write it I don't see any issues with going through with the fan fiction.

@Terquem Some of us do it for the enjoyment of the reader, not the checks and fame. My skills are a bit rough but I think I do well enough to write something on a game I draw inspiration from.

@Ellis Mirari I had thought of that and I only label this as fan fiction as it uses things someone else made. I've made worlds before and its really not too difficult (Desert world ftw <3) but I just want to see what I can do with Pathfinder, slaying dragons should be an interesting read eh?

@Sissyl
I think Twilight is already bad enough, and anything I write could only improve it seeing as my vampires are psychopaths who don't sparkle and murder people for entertainment. Did I mention they don't sparkle?

My Twilight Fanfiction.

The Twilight universe explodes in a giant (sparkling) fireball.

The End.
