We launched a Kickstarter... yeah I know what you all are thinking, we must be crazy with all the other Kickstarters up and running. But we had it planned long before the awesome Bones II was launched so what is a small 3PP to do? Well this is what we are going to do, we are going to spread the news like wildfire and get this thing funded. We are only running for 2 weeks so help us out. You can back the LG Kickstarter and then share share share!!! Like as in everyday, okay maybe not that much but every few days would be great. Or simply email your friends directly and tell them that our products rock and we need their help to make this happen. So what do you say? http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/legendarygames/legendary-games-pathfind er-books-in-print

Why not just do POD?

their goal is to get into gaming stores, which means printing first and waiting months to start getting any sales revenue. It can be expensive.

Hopefully the margins are better (presuming they sell) if you take the financial risk of printing your product as opposed to POD. (I dont really know, but it would bother me if that weren't the case).

HELL YES.

I wish this was running longer -- if it was a month, I'd be able to put enough down for the print version; as it is, I may wind up having to cancel the pledge I did put in. :(

I signed up this morning. I will pass the word to every other gamer that I know.

Last I checked, we were 25% funded in the first 12 hours. So...that's encouraging and all, but it also means we're still 75% away from being fully funded. And there are lots of higher tier stretch goals we'd like to reach, too.

Therefore, please do share the word and support us however you can. While it's true that we do make many of our products availabe as Print-on-Demand (and some of our customers have taken advantage of that), this is a larger push to get into your favorite local game stores. Long-term, it also means it's much more likely there'll be more print products from Legendary Games available directly through Paizo and other distributors. And, it means you could also see it showing up at GenCon and elsewhere.

So, if you're a fan of our stuff and you'd like to see us to take off even further into the third-party publishing market, come out and support the Kickstarter. We'd really appreciate it...and, there's a lot of really great stuff in some of those stretch goals we'd like to do, as well. Make your game Legendary.

This is an issue for me as well, unfortunately. As much as I want to (being a Legendary Games fan and all), I won't be able to pledge within the time frame set for this Kickstarter.

Hi everybody,

Thanks so much for the support thus far - not just for the opening day of our Kickstarter but also for people like Heine and EML that are faithful supporters of all things Legendary!

The reason to do a full-on print run vs. POD is several-fold:

1. The price per unit is vastly lower for a full print run vs. print-on-demand, especially for larger books.

Take a fictitious 200-page premium full-color book. Printing that book in softcover using a POD vendor like CreateSpace would cost around $15 per book. If we're selling that book on Paizo.com, which takes a 50% consignment fee on print products, that means we'd have to charge $30 a book just to break even on the print costs, and that's before we paid dollar one for writing, art, layout, editing, or any costs in creating the book, to say nothing of actually making a profit. That's just for printing. Even if we double the price to 60 dollars, that means $30 would go to the distributor, $15 would go to printing, and $15 would go to everything else.

And most game book distributors charge closer to 60%.

Being able to do a traditional print run means we have more money to devote to paying talent to assembling the best possible products - great writers, great artists, great layout people, and so on.

2. Print runs allow us to create features in a book that POD either can't accommodate or would be a cost-prohibitive add-on.

This is in part the same as #1, but there are also some things that POD vendors just don't offer. When we do a print run, we can create things that we can't with POD.

3. Running a Kickstarter offers the opportunity to enhance existing products.

Doing POD means you're able to get a print version of the existing product. With a KS, you can use some of the proceeds to create new or enhanced cover art, perforated handouts, maps, and other cool stuff to make products you already had even better.

4. Running a KS and creating a print run allows us to get products into stores.

Even in today's internet-heavy market, there are a lot of people that get their gaming product through physical stores rather than buying online. People who don't buy on line would never have the opportunity to buy something POD. People being able to see a product in a store and pick it up, see it and hold it, that is a great avenue toward getting Legendary Games products into far more people's hands.

5. A Kickstarter gives you a chance to offer fun extras besides the product itself.

It offers a neat way for fans to interact with the company, help guide the kinds of products we make, get access to experiences they normally couldn't, and take some ownership in the companies they like and support. Even if it's just a donation of a few dollars, you get to put some skin in the game as a patron.

I should point out that we have some special bonus goals in mind based on NUMBER of backers, quite apart from the total dollars involved. Even if you can only back for a dollar or five dollars, you can help bring some really fun stuff to the party for everyone.

Thanks again to everyone for your support, and as always we look forward to helping Make Your Game Legendary!

I really want to do this, but this is coming out at the worst possible moment where I'm as stretched thin in my RPG budget as I have been in a long time. I admit, I'm already going to be spending more this month that is wise for me to do with multiple other kickstarters and a large Paizo order coming, not to mention a jacked up car insurance payment I got recently. I might even be glad if Paizo really doesn't release any Pathfinder books next month as it's going to let me recover.

Still if it's possible for me to get on this depending on how things work out I might, and if everything goes well and it's funded I might pick up the books in the future.

We would love your support at whatever level you feel comfortable. We'll be including a list of all backers in the final book, even if you pledge just a dollar or five. We want you to feel like a part of the Legendary community in every way you can, but if the timing isn't right we aren't going anywhere but up, so come on back and get on the Legendary train whenever you can!

Would you consider a pledge of $1 to show support and let your friends see you pledge too. Sometimes that goes a long way. No pledge is too small!

Switched some Kickstarter funds around and pledged a wee bit.

Hey, I haven't seen any promotional images for Facebook. Are there any plans to create those? Or can I create one myself (subject to Legendary Games approval, of course!)?

I've set my pledge. If this means I am one step closer to Legacy of Fire plug-ins, I'm for it.

Right, to get the bundle it's the $70 pledge.

You can always donate to makeyourgamelegendary@gmail.com via Paypal. It would not be recorded by the Kickstarter system or counted towards their funding system goals, but if you would like to back us and for whatever reason can't use the usual payment methods for Kickstarter, then by all means you are welcome to use Paypal and we will find a way to make it work.

If you do use Paypal, please also send an email to us at the same email to let us know.

It's true. And the more backers we get and the more stretch goals we hit (both for dollars and for number of backers), the bigger the book YOU get. Your book may end up 144, 240 pages, or more if we hit on dollars and backers.

Do have a question on the PDF though, would it be one big PDF file like the book will be, or each individual product in it's own file like what's available now?

It's absolutely in full color. Gorgeous layout and artwork. Hardcover if we make the 15K funding goal, which seems like a pretty good chance. Additional existing content for certain funding goals, and additional brand-new content if we reach new backer goals (regardless of money).

If you were to go onto our site or the Paizo webstore or anywhere else, just the basic funding goal set of PDFs individually, it would cost $32.41. A backer at the $25 level is getting a newly laid out compilation product of all 9 of those products about 25% off. If you're pledging for the print book, adding the PDF is $15, or less than half the PDF purchase price.

And if we reach any of our bonus goals, the value of your purchase goes up but your pledge price doesn't. If the full Gothic book is funded, you could be looking at $65 worth of PDFs (bought individually) for your $25 pledge or $15 add-on (from 55 up to 70) and a 272-page full-color hardback for your $55 pledge.

Our intention with the PDF is to provide it as a single compilation, though if someone preferred to receive the individual PDFs we could probably do that instead.

Hey Jason/Rachel, out of curiosity, why the 2 week run instead of a full month? I've set KS to remind me about this one so I can kick in once I get in the next invoice or two I have floating around out there, but the tight window is killing me. ;)

That said, I am 99.9% sure I will be kicking in before the 48 hour alert activates.

How often do you plan on posting updates and will you answer questions if there is some type of delay?

Probably to avoid the "dead period" that seems to hit almost all kickstarters. Plus there's the issue of the work involved during a kick starter maintaining the enthusiasm and repeatedly answering the same queries.

Provided your prospective market hears about it, running a kick starter for longer doesn't really help - it all funds on the final day anyhow, so that day will either suit people or it won't. (By and large, there'll be exceptions I'm sure).

Rachel's experience running three Kickstarters bears out what some others have said, that for MOST kickstarters the extra time doesn't really help, that there's usually a low-pledge lull in the middle of a monthlong Kickstarter, that the work of actually running it is quite substantial, and as long as your publicity efforts are strong you'll probably get the same backers in two weeks that you would get in four. There are exceptions, of course; having only 15 days means that if a potential backer happens to have a tight money period, they have less time to get to the other side of it and free up cash to pledge. That's also a risk, of course, even with a monthlong Kickstarter; the longer period ablates that risk a bit but not a lot.

My apologies for the killification of our particular window, but again Rachel's research here is key in terms of managing the how, why, and when of our KS. The November/December holiday season is evidently a very unfavorable one for crowdfunding, so it was now or wait until January. Running it now, if all goes according to plan, we'll have our books DONE and ready to ship in January. The latter sounds much more appealing to me and hopefully to you too! :)

Besides, once this KS has been fulfilled, you never know what might be coming next down the Legendary road...

PathfinderFan64 wrote:

There will be at least daily updates on the Kickstarter site itself. Updates are also being emailed to backers and crossposted to facebook (and I believe Twitter and Google+; I'd have to check with Rachel to make sure). As you can see, Rachel and I are stopping by this thread several times a day to answer questions and provide information.

As for delays, we can certainly hope there will be none! But if by mischance there should be some, all of the above avenues will be used to convey whatever information is required.

Thanks. I just wanted to be sure that if I do back your kickstarter that once it funds you will still communicate with the backers. 3 other ks did this to me so I just wanted to be sure. I have bought almost everything your company has produced and everything is of great quality so I look forward to supporting your ks.

I canceled my Bones pledge (just not enough time in a day to paint all those miniatures), and so I'm in for $70 + international shipping. Now, let's get to 300 backers so we can get that Greg Vaughan adventure! :)

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2008 Top 4; Contributor; Publisher, Legendary Games

Woo! And your pledge pushed us over the $6000 mark! Not bad for 3-1/2 days in!

Good luck with this! Alas, I'm in the same boat as a few others in being unable to free up any funds until the latter half of the month - for a while I was even worried I may have to cancel one of my Paizo subs this month, but throwing some books on ebay has managed to keep me afloat enough for those.
