Sad for sure.
For the most part I felt that Clancy's books started out in the stratosphere and each new book was slightly less interesting and compelling than the last. I still think that by far his best two books are "The Hunt for Red October" and "Red Storm Rising."
Of course I live in Denver and he nuked us... so...

+1, qualified. I think I liked Cardinal of the Kremlin better by a hair (with the notable exception of the US turncoat's motivation, about which the less said the better), but since that was IIRC his third it doesn't materially change your point.

What a shame. I didn't care for his last few offerings, but as others have noted The Hunt for Red October and Red Storm Rising were among the most compelling books I've ever read. Red Storm in particular painted an exceptionally interesting take on modern war back in the 80s.
Sorry to see him go (and so young)!
