What's in your pull file? Why?

Comics

1 to 50 of 53 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

Right now, my pull file consists of:

BPRD (and variants), Conan, Elephantmen (possibly on the way out), Fables, Fairest, KotD (although I read it in 4 issue blocks), The Massive, Manhattan Project, Mouse Guard, Saga, The Walking Dead.

I've picked up East of West, Federal Bureau of Physics, God is Dead, and Trillium, to see if I like them. I haven't gotten to them yet, but they're staring at me.

I recently read Prophet, and it's a Numenera campaign waiting to happen.

For me, these are (with the exception of KotD) about the story of the characters in the world around them, and don't get into the superhero schtick as much. Additionally, I positively love the writing of Brian Wood (since Channel Zero!), Jonathan Hickman (For Transhuman and Pax Romana, mainly), Warren Ellis (going back to Transmet), and Bill Willingham. I even dipped my toes into Secret Avengers because of Ellis. Alan Moore's stuff is usually pretty good, too. So having one of those writers tends to get me to take a chance on a book.

What about you? What are you getting in your pull file?

What's a pull file?

At my FLCS, that's what they call your monthly reserved comics-- your pull file.

I've seen it called "the box," "the pull box," "your file," ...basically, what are you reserving a copy of, every month, no matter what?

-Ben.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Oh, thank you, then, um, well, nothing, I stopped reading comics 25 years ago.

My little pony. Because I'm a brony.
Pathfinder. Because I love pathfinder.
Star wars legacy. Because the storyline moved forward.
Kick-ass. Because I love the idea and the whole thing takes place in the same neighborhood as my comic book shop.
Avengers arena. Because its getting out and out WEIRD.
Avengera arena spinoff the name of which I can't remember right now. Because new characters are fun and everybody has a school for special children now. Although I don't like that quentin quire is in it.

Terquem, you realize this is in the comics subforum, right? Why do you have it open on your page if you don't read them?

Anyway...

My subscriptions are...

FF (Future Foundation) - Marvel - A really nice, difficult to achieve balance between humor and surreal situations and dealing with some serious issues. I like the cast, both the main four (Ant Man, She Hulk, Medusa, and Darla Deering) and the students at the foundation. I should probably be following Fantastic Four along with it, but can't quite get into it.

Steed and Mrs. Peel - Boom! - For some odd reason, they're not allowed to call this comic "The Avengers." ;) But it's about the couple who were heroes of the British TV show from the 60s called by that name, and it is a faithfully done, very fun comic based on this series. The artwork is mostly great.

Red Sonja - Dynamite! - 1) Gail Simone 2) Hot redhead stabbing things with swords. If I have to elaborate further, I doubt you'd understand anyway.

The Movement - DC - Also written by Gail Simone, is a pretty neat story about young adult metahumans trying to protect the disenfranchised in a heavily corrupt city where the police are owned by the underworld, more or less. It's only 4 issues in but there's already LOADS and LAYERS of character history and development, and the premise is interest to me.

Angel and Faith - Dark Horse - Because Faith kicks ass and I'll put up with the broody spiky haired guy to see her. Plus it currently features Rupert Giles trapped in the body of 12 year old, which is hilarious. (Also, generally good supporting cast).

I'm also picking up the Buffy comic right now, but only because Illyria's in it at the moment. Not really interested in the storyline really, and wish they would just let Dawn die, but Illyria, so. Not actually subscribing, and will drop it once Illyria leaves again (probably after the next issue).

Always open to suggestions. Would love to read fewer TV tie-in comics but those have been what have grabbed me of late. If there's any other Marvel comics in particular besides FF ya'll'd recommend, I'd definitely like to know. No X-Men--I love the X-Men, but I've been burned by one too many crossovers and have no longer the mental fortitude to try to keep up.

You might enjoy the tongue in cheek semi-parody the x men is doing now because there are loads of x men from different time periods surrounding the original team, arguing about time travel and alternate universes and stuff. No, really, thats the actual plot. I'm waiting for another group of x men to show up and contradict the group of xmen who showed up an issue previous.

Nerp sorry. Apparently did not make myself clear enough. Not ever reading X Men again, hilarious or no. I have more utter confusion about what's going on in a comic book/series of comic books by reading X Men, and a story about mixed up timelines, however self aware and tongue in cheek, sounds especially confusion ridden.

So: let's be absolutely positively clear:

1) Please recommend Marvel Books

2) that are not X Men or X Men related

Thank you. :)

I pull...

All New X-Men

Uncanny X-Men

'special pull for Battle of the Atom' This is how an event should be published. 2 months in related titles (4 titles total), a 'special issue' bookend at the beginning and end, and absolutely nothing else! Not 12 issues by itself, 3-4 issues crossing over through a dozen titles or more, plus more special issue tie-ins and some things which better explain the plot but are only available to premium-direct-from-the-publisher subscribers. Yes, I'm talking about AvX here.

The Shadow

Green Lantern
Green Lantern Corps
New Guardians

I might drop these shortly. I'm getting 'Universe Ending Threat Fatigue' from these. I'm trying to remember when the last time they did something small like try to save all life on Earth and I can't remember. I'm running short on patience for what is basically a never-ending crossover event between the titles.

Nightwing

Suicide Squad

Wheel of Time

On the 'semi-pull' list I am grabbing the Conan collections where they are trying to tell all the books (Howard and Jordan) on a chronological order, and grabbing the omnibuses for Nexus.

DeathQuaker wrote:

Man, I got nothing, except maybe Hawkeye, as I heard that was pretty good.

Marvel really doesn't do much for me in comics-- their movies are a good time, and I like that they're bringing more awareness of comics to mainstream folks, but the comics just bore the heck out of me.

I tend to read more Vertigo/Independent stuff.

-Ben.

The only Marvel titles I'm picking up at the moment are the All-New X-Men and the Avengers.
I'm enjoying the culture class of the original X-Men and their modern counterparts, though I don't see it as much of a "tongue in cheek semi-parody". For me it's working partly because they're playing it straight. Or as straight as comic books get.
Hickman's Avengers are big bold high-concept superheroics. Reminds me a little of Warren Ellis on Stormwatch/Authority without the cynicism or swearing.

Outside of Marvel:
With recent losses of writers, I've dropped the last DC Universe titles I was reading - Batwoman & Earth 2. LSH & Batman, Inc had ended.
Still into Fables and Astro City at Vertigo.

Pretty much anything Mike Mignola's touched: Hellboy, B.P.R.D. and various spinoffs. Awesome character driven horror.

Terry Moore's Rachel Rising.
About a nice girl who wakes up buried in a shallow grave to find she's now a zombie. And why.

And as Grey Lensman said, picking up the Nexus Omnibuses to fill in the holes in my Nexus collection.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

Rachel Rising sounds interesting. (Also, I hope it's okay I am commenting and asking for recs; I don't mean to derail. I like seeing what's on people's pull lists too!)

Terquem probably just has the Gamer Life page open.

All of the sub-forum content appears directly on the main Gamer Life page so you can't always instantly tell which area a topic is from.

e.g. while I'm replying to this all the top of the page says for me is "Paizo / Messageboards / Paizo Community / Gamer Life"

No mention of the Comic sub-forum there.

Anyway...

I haven't had a comic subscription in a while, these days I like to just browse and pick-up whatever catches my eye on the day.
My only subscriptions are imports that aren't normally on the shop-floor.

Currently I pull:

DC

-Batman: Pretty good over all thought id like to see more court of owls.
-Batman: det. comics, hit or miss it seems every other story arc is awesome.
-Justice League
-Forever Evil: new addition, first issue was pretty good we shall see

Marvel

-Avengers Arena: Super powered teenager battle royale, whats not to like.
-Captain America: I really liked the dimension X sorty arc cant wait to see whats next.
-the avengers amd new avengers: these 2 are on the chopping block I have not been inpressed by the last 5 or so issues.

Other

Pathfinder comics: they are awesome...nuff said
The Star Wars: also new we shall see.

*EDIT* Forgot one: I also get The Walking Dead volumes as they are released.

I'm not really sure what you mean. I've never seen a view that looks like that. I know there's a subforum view, but it shows the sub-subforum names to the left of the thread title. Maybe there's a browser difference. Anyway, I realized I sounded like I was criticizing and I'm not, the whole thing just struck me as odd, but if it looks different on other people's browsers that would explain it.

I just tested the forum on another browser and saw the sub-forum names to the left of the topics like you said.

I guess I've set something on my main browser that alters the page view.

The most recent ones that have caught my eye were:
Rogues: Issues 1-4
Executive Assistant Iris
Ballistic: Issues 1 & 2
Thorgal: Vol 10
Sleeping Moon: Vol 2
Chronos Commandos Dawn Patrol
Slaine: The King & The Killer
Suicide Risk: Issue 1

Liberty's Edge

Pathfinder
Knights of the Dinner Table
Usagi Yojimbo
Mouse Guard

Haven't read any Marvel in years and gave up the few DC titles I had with they did the new 52 thing.

Sovereign Court

My Little Pony regular series and Micros and Knights of the Dinner Table are what are in my files.

MLP is pretty fun. Enjoying the stories and the art.

I'd kill for more order of the dragon guard. Love that series.

DeathQuaker wrote:

I haven't read a comic book in my life. I can have whatever open I want! ;)

I've found the serialization of the Stephen King series-- Dark Tower, The Stand, and then N, to be pretty good. The Ender's Game series was pretty cool, too.

-Ben.

The Exchange

Grimm - the show is shot locally, my wife likes the comic, it is a great excuse to go down to the shop without having to explain more than "there is a new grimm". If anyone likes the show they do a good job of keeping the characters true to the series.

Battlestar Galactica - I actually buy these mostly for the Alex Ross covers. I read the first issue and it was ok, but that cover art is phenomenal.

Red Sonja - same reasoning as listed in the above post.

The Star Wars - I like the original concept work. As a life long Star Wars fan it is interesting to get outside the canon a bit and see something new (but old).

Buzzkill - New, I chuckle at the story concept, looking forward to the development of this title.

Shadow Lodge

Pathfinder
My Little Pony

Currently, my pull list consists of the following:

Invincible: Because I got into it around issue 25-ish and was a fan of Kirkman from his awesome, and criminally underappreciated, series Battle Pope(which I discovered when they did a color reprint in 2005). It's had its ups and downs, like all of Kirkman's long-running books, but it's been good overall, like all of Kirkman's books.

Batman Beyond Universe: I love the Batman Beyond cartoon series, right along with just about everything else that Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Alan Burnett worked together on.

Batman-Superman: This is more for my 4-year-old nephew, who's in love with the ideas of both Batman and Superman. I enjoy it, but it's mostly so I have a big stack of stuff for him once he gets a basic grasp of reading beyond "See Spot Run."

Bomb Queen: Not really being pulled right now since it's a multiple mini-series comic, but I've loved every one of them so far. I keep it on my list just in case, since I don't stop down at my FLCS more than once every 3 months or so and I don't want to miss a new one.

I used to have a larger pull list, but budget constraints and the fact that I hadn't read a 6+ month backlog of more than a few of the books caused me to trim the list in drastic fashion. Also, a lot of my pull list has historically been made up of mini-series runs, which I don't really include as part of the list since they're usually 5-6 issues and done.

Monthlies that I used to pull included - The Walking Dead(20-104), Chew(1-35), Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps(Started shortly after the Sinestro Corps War, ended at #12 of the New 52 relaunch), Bloodshot(1-13), Harbinger(1-15), X-O Manowar(1-12), Haunt(1-25)

Only comics I read is Fables and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen nowadays.

My Pull list v2

DC

-Batman
-Batman: det. comics
-Justice League
-Justice League Dark
-JLA
-Forever Evil: ARGUS, Arkham War, Rogues rebellion etc. (pretty much every thing FE I really like this story line)

Marvel

-Avengers Arena: The arena storyline just ended but I think im going to continue getting whatever Avengers Academy series they release next.
-Captain America: I really liked the dimension X story arc cant wait to see whats next.
-A+X: (mostly) funny marvel one shots. Gest a little silly at times but not bad.

Other

-Pathfinder and PF Goblins comics: they are awesome...nuff said
-The Star Wars
-The Walking Dead trades as they are released.

Also I tend to pick up anything that catches my eye when I spin the racks.

I'm pretty new to comics (started with the New 52 for DC and Marvel Now) and listing these out makes me realize just how addicted I've become.

Sissyl wrote:

Fables isn't quite as good as in its best years, but still worth picking up.

I'd keep reading League if he'd keep writing them.

Speaking of Moore, Marvel is reprinting his Miracleman stories. These are brilliant. As good and as important in their own way as Watchmen, just not as well known since they've languished with ownership problems.

If you haven't read these, get them.

Neil Gaiman will be finishing up his run on the title as well or at least the unpublished issues will be released.

Neil's also doing a new Sandman series. The only thing other than Fables I'm buying from DC at the moment.

At this point my Pull List is:

All of the Valiant Titles except for Shadowman and Quantum and Woody.

All New X-Men
Uncanny X-Men
Avengers
New Avengers
Captain America
Uncanny Avengers
Guardians of the Galaxy

East of West (will be going to trades on this one)
Black Science
Sex Criminals (will be going to trades on this one)
Invincible (I buy singles and HC trades)
Manhattan Projects (in trades only)
Fatale (I buy the trades)
Velvet
Lazarus

Astro City

Other than Astro City I don't buy anything from DC anymore.

Why no quantum and woody?

It seems very odd to say this but Hawkeye is the only current comic on my pull list. There is no better artist and writer working currently than David Aja and Matt Fraction.

I'm getting caught up on old comics, like Craig Thompsons Blankets, and Paul Popes Battling Boy.

-MD

I'll have to look at Hawkeye then.

Nowadays all I read is my little pony, Pathfinder and kickass. Thumb through Green Lantern when I feel too happy about life and want to cry about something. Flip through Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy, but they are a bit too gritty for me, and that's saying something.

Currently my pull list consists of:

No DC at all. I gave it up after the New 52 started. Clean break.

Avengers
Avengers Assemble
New Avengers
Mighty Avengers
A+X
Amazing X-Men
Thor
Uncanny Avengers
X-Men

Pathfinder
Star Trek
Anything that comes out Farscape or Firefly related

It used to be much, much more, but after being laid off a few times over the last ten years, running out of space for comics in my house, and waiting for our new arrival, I've been trying to pull back as I can.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

Still reading The Movement, Red Sonja, and FF. Added to the list is Rat Queens.

FF is supposed to end soon... but it's supposed to lead to something else I think? So I hope whatever it does will leave me something to read. Particularly with She-Hulk in it.

The description of Hawkeye upthread sounds intriguing, if Fraction is also writing it. Are both Clint and Kate in it?

Yeah, it's Clint Barton and Kate Bishop is a big part of it.

Fraction does an awesome job with those character moments. And Clint Barton is a rare type of character. He is self deprecating, not the brightest bulb and the adventures are very low scale. Most of the action takes place around his slummy neighborhood.

They are on issue 15 right now but if you can go back and pick up issue #1 you will not be disappointed.

Link to some samples on Marvels website Link.

Loved him on the thunderbolts.

Freehold DM wrote:

Read the 1st issue and it really didn't grab me. I have all of the issues to date I just havent read them and I'm not in a rush to. Unlike the rest of the Valiant titles (except for Shadowman. I have all of the issues of Shadowman as well except for 13. Not in a rush for that series either...)

I also wandered in here wondering what a pull file was. And thanks for the answer. I can answer why Terquem was seeing this forum DQ, he probably uses the same index link I use that shows a large group of subforums all at once, including the comics subforum.

X-Factor
X-men
Amazing X-Men
Uncanny X-Men
All-New X-Men
X-Men Legacy
Uncanny Avengers

So yeah... X-men books. Ever since Kitty Pryde called Professor X a Jerk!

The best of those books (IMO) X-Factor (because Peter David) and All-New Xmen (because original X-men & Bendis)
Happy with Amazing because it's bringing Nightcrawler back!

Also Buffy (but the new season hasn't started.
And soon to add the new New Warriors book.

Looks like I will be down to one DC comic in a couple of months. I was down to New Guardians, Nightwing, and Suicide Squad, but the latter 2 are getting cancelled soon.

Beyond that, my Pull list is now....

All-New X-Men
Uncanny X-Men
The Shadow

And temporary pulls (either limited series or crossovers)

The Shadow NOW
A+X (for the Cap/Cyke story)
Guardians of the Galaxy

And an open pull for ANYTHING new with Mike Baron and Steve Rude's Nexus.

Pathfinder. Though I'm not really into comics (imho they're too expensive for the entertainment value, and should be digital and adopt some sort of rental model, ala DVDs), one of our PFS locations is in a comic store and I try to show them a little love.

bugleyman wrote:

Done & Done.

Comics ARE offered in a variety of digital formats now and available at significantly reduced costs (in some cases, free.)
And many Trade Paperbacks (old and recently released) are available at most public libraries as well. If your closest library has a limited selection, most offer inter-library loans where you can select from an online catalog and have what you'd like delivered and held to your library of choice.

Now you just have to find some you might like. ;)

Freehold DM wrote:

I find Matt Fraction to be a mixed bag (and I'm actually a fan of his). I own and have read the first 5 or 6 issues of Hawkeye and it's done nothing for me. NOTHING. For the life of me I don't see what people are losing their minds over with this book.

On the other hand Sex Criminals I think is really, really interesting and good. I thought that Fraction's IRON MAN run was probably one of the best runs on that book in a long time and really underrated. His work on the Annual which details a story about a filmmaker making a movie about the Mandarin's life story is one of the best examinations of human ego and the ability to garner even the smallest victory while being ground down by the yoke of tyranny. The Mandarin as portrayed by Fraction in his run is a complex guy, but still a VERY BAD PERSON.

New warriors coming back? Marvel will wrest a few bucks from me as a result.

Occasionally thumb through Nova, I mustadmit. And iI liked Avengers Arena before the dumb ending(although I have to admit arcade has a future as an Internet/YouTube sensation troll) . Most of the guys in the shop agreed with me that the series should have been much much shorter.

I actually have bought several of the DC digital only titles @ $.99, which I feel is a fair value. I'd probably regularly pick up other titles if they were available for $1, I'm just not sure the industry can sustain itself at that price point.

I'd probably also pay for a month or two of access to the entire back catalog (say, 6+ months old) from a publisher assuming the price was right. Seems like it would be better than the zero revenue they currently get form me for back catalog titles.

$4 a title a month is simply too much. Maybe I don't have enough appreciation for the art, but it doesn't take me long to read a comic book. Besides, where would I put them all? :)

*shrug* Who knows? I'm pretty sure things will sort themselves out over the next 5-10 years, and I hope comics survive in some form.

There's no comic shop in finland which you could buy comics in this format. But I do collect some series when they come in paperback volumes:

-All-New X-men
-Superior Spider-Man
-Uncanny X-men
-Uncanny Avengers
-FF
-Young Avengers
-Captain Marvel

-Batman
-Detective comics
-Dark Knight
-Flash
-Aquaman

I've had successful dealings with Fennica in Helsinki and Alfa-Antikva in Turku. I would hazard a guess that Turun Sarjakuvakauppa would also order floppies for you if you wanted them.
