Fly, loss of altitude due to damage

Rules Questions

If you fail the Fly check after taking damage and have your altitude reduced by 10', if you're within 10' of the ground, is it immediate falling damage, or do you get another roll to avoid falling damage?

Also, if you're on a flying mount and fall, do you both take falling damage or is some absorbed by your steed, if you remain mounted?

Both take the 1d6 damage. It should be noted that this is a DC 10 check. If you have +9 to fly (and remember the flight maneuverability does give bonuses to all fly checks) this should never happen (in normal circumstances).

I add a question: what if I'm under 10 ft? Do I avoid falling damage? And if I fail the check while I'm flying at few cm from the ground, do I go prone?

Generally falling less than 5ft does not deal damage, but it does make you prone. Between 5ft and 10ft is more of a grey area. I'd say take the 1d6 damage and prone.
