So, it's going to be a while, but...

What are your hopes on the kind of folks we'll see in this book?

Looking at what we have already, the Inner Sea human ethnicities that don't have iconic representation yet are:

Mwangi
Shoanti
Erutaki

Any more?

Meanwhile, across non-human core races, we've yet to see:
female dwarf
female halfling
male half-orc

Personally, I'm pulling for each of these groups getting an iconic, but maybe we could see some from outside the core races show up too? C'mon, a WAR-styled tiefling*, aasimar*, or tengu iconic could be cool.

*As long as their range in appearance from Blood of ____ was kept in mind!

Anything you're hoping to see? Or predicting we'll see?

I would love a red haired female tiefling as the swashbuckler. Mostly so I could use it as art for one of my oldest characters.

Other than that I am sure I'll be impressed by the art as is mostly the case.

Please no dwarves, halflings or gnomes. That is all, beyond that I don't care. Goblins, lizardfolk and special snowflakes - yes. Or a werecat cyber ninja Slayer - that would rock.

Sorry. Couldn't resist. But the first sentence was serious.

I think it's time for a Bloodrager Goblin iconic!

The iconics should be interesting races like aboleth, mu spores and gelatinous cubes.

Humanoid races are boring. If I wanted to be a humanoid, I'd just go outside.

I would really love to see the Shaman iconic be a Shoanti. Actually, I think I would be a little disappointed if it wasn't since the ethnic group and the class seem like a perfect fit.

I do not like the idea of non-core raves representing iconic characters, it is a slippery slope.

With one exception - Goblin - because they should be core anyway.

Doxpox the Goblin Bloodrager - don't just be a pyromaniac - be the explosion.

+1 for Shoanti shaman, because it's just meant to be.

Would be down for a female halfling, or a Mwangi/Garundi human as an iconic. I really want to see an Arcadian, but I don't think that's happening.

I've been planning a red headed tiefling female for my alchemist (although mine was also tan), so the idea of such a character being an iconic would be pretty awesome.

I'd rather have her be the Bloodrager and have her be Amiri's eternal rival.

Dark Archive

We already have a red headed female swashbuckler, don't we?

I kind of see Aasimar and Tiefling as core now honestly. It's odd I suppose.

We need a Nagaji Bloodrager. That is all.

Catfolk Hunter iz in ur PF, stalk'n' ur BBEGs...

..... Couldn't resist that old thing.

Seriously though, I'd love to see the Female Dwarven Swashbuckler and the Female Amazonian-type Elf Bloodrager. Muscle Babes FTW.

What is "elves"?

As for the shorties - just don't like them personally.

Kthulhu just reminded me I don't like the pointy-eared mob either - except maybe dark elves... I guess I like the exotic races - humans, goblins, lizardfolk, orcs. I'd love to see a skeleton Swashbuckler and a wight Slayer. Or the other way round. Seriously.

Tieflings and Aasimars are okay, but kinda becoming the new elves for me...

Shoanti Shaman really is a natural fit. In fact, there's a perfect character design for that that's been used twice already(in Varisia:Birthplace of Legends and Faiths and Philosophies IIRC. -- the former example actually inspired one of our new gamers to go Shoanti in our next campaign).

On the Bloodrager...female dwarf or male half-orc seem like perfect thematic matchs. It could be fun to flip expectations around and go aasimar though. :)

wholeheartedly supports that high spirited, redheaded tiefling with no ulterior motives whatsoever

Flipped through my pdf of Faiths & Philosophies just to see what you were talking about, and good lord, she would be perfect. I want to see her as the iconic shaman now, and I'll be disappointed with anything else. Thanks a lot, Mikaze.

Silver Crusade

:D. The one in the Varisia player companion is even stronger IMO, though not-actiony. .

Seem to recall it being said the iconics have already been chosen 5 male 5 female all core rulebook races with a slight leaning towards humans.

Current line-up is as follows:

--Dwarves: 1
--Elves: 2
--Gnomes: 2
--Half-Elves: 2
--Half-Orcs: 1
--Halflings: 1
--Humans: 12 (I'm counting the iconic Ninja and the iconic Samurai here.)

So if we're going by Core Races only, we need more dwarves, half-orcs, and halflings. I could see a half-orc bloodrager no problem.

That said, I'm annoyed by the, "We can only use Core Races for our Pathfinder Iconics," stance, especially considering that the iconics supposedly fall in line with Golarion's racial deviations. Why? The Core Rulebook line is supposed to be setting neutral. I understand the iconics for the Core Classes (and Setiyel) because they were designed before there was a Pathfinder RPG, but if this is the line that should be setting neutral, why do we need to follow a setting's identity?

My dearest wish would be to give Reiko and Hayato some companionship and make some of the new iconics be from Tian Xia. If we're speaking technically, kitsune, nagaji, samsarans, tengu, and wayangs have all been made Core Races too, and even if we get one iconic from each of those races, that would still leave five more iconic slots that need to be filled.

Based on what we know, I'd love to see:

Dwarven War Priest
Half-Orc Bloodrager
Wayang Slayer
Nagaji/Samsaran Shaman
Tengu Swashbuckler

I know there's the rogue. Who's the second elf iconic?

Shoanti and mwangi humans would be nice. Another elf and a dwarf (female might be a nice counterpoint to Harsk). I think a tiefling, aasimar, and tengu would be good as well as they're all open for PFS play.
That's 7. Add in another half-orc and halfling and you've got a couple of all the big races.

Are we talking realistic guesses or what we actually want?

What I'd want:
10 human and/or half-elf women of a variety of ethnicities

or

5 human and/or half-elf women
and
5 human and/or half-elf men who are actually attractive--as in, they can be none of the following: grizzled, old, hairy (stubble good, beard bad), bald, excessively muscly, wearing something stupid, really pointy (I'm looking at you, alchemist)

It seems like people on the forum are racist against humans, though, so I guess I won't get anything close to that. I'll have to look at more awful gnomes, halflings, and ugly dwarves (even though I am sure dwarves are capable of being attractive).

Female Dwarf
Female Halfling
Male Half-orc

Is there a male Half-elf? If not, add one of those as well.

Hope they also use the above in a non-stereotypical manner. It would be nice to see an erudite well-dressed arcane half-orc character, for instance.

Silver Crusade

MMCJawa wrote:

Seltyiel the magus! :)

Let's break the mold a little bit with the casting.

I kind of want to see a gnome bloodrager myself. Fey bloodline. Or maybe Shadow.

Snowcaster elf shaman.

Dwarf swashbuckler.

Halfling warpriest

Human slayer. (Okay, maybe not that much of a mold breaker, but they can't all be, with just the core races.)

Half-elf hunter. (Again, not a huge mold breaker, but I'm saving the half-orc for one of the other unrevealed classes.)

I just want a sexy male half-orc, like the assassin one in the CRB. My desires are simple :)

There are 21 core or base classes already! Doesn't seem that way - wow, did I loose track. So the class book will take it to 31. Seems like there's some room for a few non core races by now then. I want to see:

Bloodrager: female Goblin bloodrager !
Hunter: Female poison arrow Grippli !!!
Shaman: Shoanti just works too well, either sex.
Slayer: female Ratfolk, but I'll take a vicious lady halfling
Warpriest: Duergar warpriest! goblin's good, kobold even, either sex.
Swashbuckler: female Halfling, gnome or dwarf (cos a squat swashbuckler is cool) but a male catfolk is a better fit.

A catfolk iconic could be cool.

A catfolk iconic with a completely different body type from any of the varied designs we've seen so far would just be cruel. Funny, but cruel. ;)

A cat with a human face and a furry quadruped body?

While you could build a chakat/taur, I don't think pathfinder is quite ready for that level of furrydom just yet... That said, I don't think it's quite ready for my quadrupedal four-armed multi-tailed dragonic beast just yet either.

I think a kitsune would make for a wonderful swashbuckler. And someone just try and tell me a samsaran slayer wouldn't be beautifully intimidating.

I vote for tian-xia non-core races...

And female dwarves. We need more female dwarves.

I always assumed he was a half elf as his eyes aren't solid black.

Is there a second half-elf then?

Lirienne the iconic Gunslinger and Seyitiel the iconic Magus are both half-elves.

As for the iconics, I do not want a male half-orc Bloodrager. That's far too obvious. Make him the Slayer to match up with the Assassin, or even the Swashbuckler. Let the female halfling be the Bloodrager in the Paizo tradition of going for the non-obvious route for each race. Ok, if that's too silly, let it be the drawf. Should be non-human, though as both the barbarian and sorcerer iconics are humans. And female. Hmm. Must ponder further.

I would like to see a tiefling iconic, and dwarven spell-caster (since that's rare). But otherwise, I like to see a diverse group including unexpected race/class combos, and interesting back stories to go with them.

So when you're indoors you're NOT a humanoid? Strange, but interesting.

I second the need for more dwarven (arcane) casters.

Dark Archive

Thirding dwarven arcane spellcaster love. The Loremaster pic in the core book is pretty cool, 'though, along those lines.

I know Seltyiel is the male half-elf, but who's the female half-elf?

From the Bestiaries, for non-setting-specific races, we've got;

Bestiary 1 - aasimar, drow, drow noble, duergar, goblin, hobgoblin, kobold, merfolk, orc, svirfneblin, tengu, tiefling
Bestiary 2 - dhampir, grippli, fetchling, ifrit, oread, sylph, undine
Bestiary 3 - catfolk, ratfolk, vanara, vishkanya

Of them, the bestiary 1 races seem most reasonable as 'iconics,' since, no matter how cool vishkanya or grippli might be, I don't think they would be terribly 'iconic...'

Of those bestiary 1 races, drow nobles and kobolds are outliers on the power scale, in different directions, and merfolk are pretty darn nailed into their niche, being legless.

Goblins, orcs, drow and tieflings, on the other hand, either always have been, or, thanks to Planescape, have become, fairly iconic.

There's also the possibility that the 'second dwarf iconic' could be a duergar, and cover two bases.

There's already a neat Wayne Reynolds tengu on the cover of the Advanced Race Guide, but that one looks pretty much like a standard cleric, and not something that would necessarily fit any of the ten new iconics.

Setting specific (and much less likely to be used);

Inner Sea World Guide - gillman, strix
Inner Sea Bestiary - android, gholan, lashunta, monkey goblin, syrinx
Dragon Empires - kitsune, nagaji, samsarans, wayangs

Lirianne, the iconic gunslinger.

James Jacobs already nixed the idea of non-core races, which I think is probably for the best. They are supposed to be an iconic representation of the game. The non-core races are really quite rare.

Silver Crusade

So are we definitely getting WAR designed Iconics for the ten new classes?

Confirmed?

Ooh, she does have little points on her ears! I had not noticed!

She also has a real interesting backstory; her elven mom had a lengthy (by human standards) relationship with her human dad, but left them in a moment of capriciousness while Liri was young. I'm pretty sure it tied in to her fascination with stories of faeries and princesses and dragons and knights, which in Alkenstar are almost as fantastical as they are here.

I want:

-A Tengu Swashbuckler Iconic named Arynn Hollyhawk
-A Catfolk Slayer Iconic named Arrona
-An Aasimar War Preist named Arohollin
-A Teifling Bloodrager named Villhelm Linnwerth
-A Ratfolk Shaman (because, that's why!!!)

I also want a female dwarf and halfling. I'm hoping the slayer is a human female for Buffy reasons.
Arcane dwarves are fantastic and we need more of them. The loremaster art was enough to make me wanna play one.
Also hoping for male half-orc and Mwangi iconics, but not as the bloodrager. We have enough crap like that to last us a lifetime.
