Lock you ore up, and hide your rocks. The miner invader has returned!

Goblin Squad Member

Hmmm I might have to try this game out.

For me I tend to want to play defensive/attrition characters or healers. Would the guild/clan be in need of one of those? I also am working nights so my time currently is limited.

Goblin Squad Member

We were taught quite a few things about the early game by a friend of Andius's last night, but I forgot to note his name :-(. Since everyone can adopt any role at almost any time, he recommends everyone start as a Warrior and fight in melee as you "develop".

All ranged-attackers use ammunition, whether arrows or spell components. It costs more, at first, to replace your ammunition than you make from your kills.

Melee allows you to avoid that cost, while still learning how to use the game's quite-arcane GUI to juggle all the things you need to do. He and Andius say this new Darkfall is far simpler than the original one, where they juggled hundreds of abilities in real-time, often requiring AutoHotKey and multi-button mice to perform at the top of the game.

He says the most-important thing is to learn to shift from one ability to another, especially the ones that let you trade Health, Mana, and Stamina for one another; a given class runs short on one before the others. He told us to avoid PVP until we know our own characters completely, as five experienced characters could take out 20 of us newbies.

He told us to be prepared to die frequently, and to lose everything often; Darkfall is a full-loot game, not just 75%. There's nothing like threading, except you'll always have three basic weapons: sword, bow, and magic staff.

Up-front Prowess (experience) gathering is important, as we'll see a noticeable improvement in our survival by spending the first several hundreds or thousands "properly". I had to leave about then, so I've yet to make notes on "properly".

EDIT: he said there's a lot of experience to be had in crafting.

To answer your question directly, Andius recommends that we eventually have as few melee characters as we can get away with, as ranged will be more important in live combat. His friend tells us learning to aim is an important, but difficult, process, so it's another thing for lots of practice.

...more to learn.

I just learned the last night that it is very easy to play more than one Role. I was quickly realizing that adventuring at this point as an Elementalist was going to cost me almost as much money as I was making, and I would die a lot until I could get my skills up. I simply switched to the Warrior Role, put on some Chain Mail (thanks, Decius!) grabbed a handful of two-handed weapons out of my "Salvage later" bag and it was a whole new game.

I don't intend to spend any points on my Warrior skills, or on my Warrior attributes, but it makes it much easier to farm and kill zombies.

Oh, and my response to your quote - and I expect it's the response you would get from >95% of all competent guild leaders - is play the Role you want to play. If you try to develop a character based on Guild need, that need is likely to be filled by someone else by the time you level up.

It's a bit of a different story if you have a small group you're going to be grouping with all the time. In that case, it's probably a good idea to choose complementary Roles.

Lord Zanuul... might possibly have been LordZanuul. I'm not sure about the whitespace but the spelling is correct.

That's the spelling I remember seeing in the Teamspeak channel; thanks!

Goblin Squad Member

Use staff bolt and run backwards to kill zombies.
No risk, no cost, all the loot.

I call it 'The Kaufman Retrograde'

Re: Lord Zanuul, yes very helpful fellow. Once he explained that the circles under the paper doll are the quick item slots, using a mount got real easy :D

But by all the gods make sure you know which retreat route is safe! The camera's so close-in, and the sound cues so lacking, that situational awareness is very difficult.

Goblin Squad Member

alrighty.

Decided to try it out.

Thrunk Grank orcish warrior currently at okrim. Just learning the game, killing some mobs and gathering.

I'd like to join you all, but my mother has been ill over the past few months, and isn't getting better, though thankfully it isn't life threatening. However at 80, she lacks the funds to cover all that medicare and her medi-gap coverage doesn't cover. $40 for a game, plus $15/month is too pricey at this time, especially for a game that is, essentially, just a practice game. If someone, at some point, goes for a lower priced, or even F2P game (yeah, I'm not a fan of those in general), I'll join up. Until then, my wife & I, my sister and my other sister & her husband are laying out a lot for medications (medicare part D sucks), home health aid, and Dr visits for Mom.

Good luck all!

Goblin Squad Member

Sorry to hear about your mother Gloreindl, I hope she recovers to full health speedily.

Goblin Squad Member

All our best wishes go with your mother and the rest of your family. Take care of them, and we'll be here when you're available to come join the conversation.

Goblin Squad Member

Best wishes, Gloreindl. Surely we will still hear from you here!

Goblin Squad Member

Lai Than, Mahirim (simply because no one had made one yet).

Goblin Squad Member

Can't find you when I do a search, Kit. Send a Friend Request to Nihimon Vhanesylvan if you can.

I will :/ as soon as the game alows me to play, still get "invalid server response. please restart."

i send an error report but nothing from the devs as of now, well :/ the free month isn´t used up yet...

Goblin Squad Member

We stand at 18, with the following members having stated they will join shortly (seems after Labor Day will be the next bump):

Harad Navar

Lord of Elder Days

Daklas

And a guy from Pax Bringslite named but I can't remember

Not really pending, but not able to get in:

Gedichtewicht

Duncania Blade has a problem much like Gedichtewicht. She is in France (I think she is a she?). Lhan hasn't had much trouble, but maybe the connection to the NA server from Europe is a problem? No idea, just seems a strange coincidence.

Any, that'll put us over 20. Making strides!!

(Ryan and maybe a couple more may come in later after the shows slow down.)

Goblin Squad Member

George will join after 9/01.

Goblin Squad Member

I don't know about European connections to the NA server - I'm playing through a VPN (though that's set to the UK not US) so who can tell. Will try to log in "from" the Czech Republic next time and see if that makes a difference.

she is a he in fact ;)

the problem seems to appears if u have two players on both servers

Not in my case, acording to the log files i send to support there is a couple of problems, some shader error, some ping errors, and some missing fonts error, haven´t looked deeper into it, but i hope the support guys finaly have enough data to fix my game up :/

ok, so i will compare to my reports

Goblin Squad Member

*shrugs* Sorry about that Duncania. For what it's worth, most of my game characters are female. But since I knew I'd eventually be getting on Team Speak I thought having a guy's voice coming out of a beautiful female Dwarf might get confusing.. :) Yeah, they DO exist!

Goblin Squad Member

Lhan I use a VPN router but am not using VPN when connected to the game. No problems from here (Philadelphia).

Goblin Squad Member

No problems for me either, Being - but I am just suggesting that I don't think it's having a European IP address is the problem.

Goblin Squad Member

i don´t think it is something with the location, i think they screwed up some parts of the last patch.

anyway, @kenshi33 - here is where i stand atm:

not sure it will far better for me, they dont sent me email since monday... i begin to think i'll no longer play this good game.

Goblin Squad Member

I hope you both get these issues resolved! It was great seeing you both in game! (Even if just for a short time :( )

We'll be in the River Kingdoms before you know it!
