What Are Your Favorite Custom Magic Items?

Advice

Like the title asks, this is meant more for fun and possible idea fueling (and maybe stealing). Doesn't have to be serious or even particularly useful. So, how about it? What are some of the favorite custom magic items either you or your DM had made?

A friend of mine had Robes of Holding. The entire inside of the robes was like a big bag of holding, not the pockets. We joked that he could have been an extremely obese wizard for all we knew.

Ring of continuation. You/personal spell lasts 24 hours
Luckstone +1 to all saves and skill checks (with new Fortunes favored trait!)
Scrolls. This and a properly statted UMD are the key to the universe.
Stalking weapons... for the guy who doesnt hit often...

Oh you said CUSTOM items.. sorry. Never had much need for those.

Closest i've come to that is wanting to purposely fail on crafting dust of appearance.
Dust of sneezing and choking is a pretty awesome result for a failed crafting check.

I like to add little magic items into my game that are more flavor than power. I include them along with the standard items so the WBL etc. is preserved, but some fun is added.

My most successful such item was the Belt of the Packmule which increased ones encumbrance limit.

The little gnome spellcaster in the group absolutely loved this item. He was happier than if he'd gotten a +6 Headband of Vast Intellect. :p

I once, with my DMs permission of course, had a mask made that basically made me look like someone else of my choice, through illusory means. Got me out of a dire situation at the time.

I'm contemplating on making one for a custom campaign I'm working on, that is a mask that makes you look like someone another person knows (besides yourself) with a save of course. I could see it being both useful and if not lucky, detrimental if the see someone they hate.

Fred Saberhagen wrotea series of fantasy novels called "The Book of Swords" that revolved around 12 magical sword-artifacts. One of them, Sightblinder had this exact power. And as you say, it proved both a help and a hindrance to the wielder, since they couldn't control who a viewer might be seeing, or know beforehand what their attitude toward that person would be.

Psychic Paper.

its not custom, i stole it from the zelda games. I stat'ed up the Hookshot, a lesser and a greater version. Players loved them, they pulled all sorts of shinanagins with those anytime i would drop one in a treasure horde.

I crafted a dungeon where the players had to undergo a construct version of the trials of Perseus, from Greek Mythology, in order to reach his lost tomb.

The Custom Loot?

A cap of darkness (as boots of speed, but 10 minutes of invisibility).

A +1 construct bane adamantine sickle that was fashioned in the likeness of the sickle given to Perseus by Athena, which in turn was said to be the sickle used by Cronus to castrate Uranus.

A couple other items that weren't custom.

And the Shield of Perseus, a +2 mirrored elyisum bronze reliquary shield that increases the number of channel energy uses per day the wearer receives and grants them Turn Undead. The drawback? The shield provides no benefits and penalizes the wearer's AC if you don't have the aura of good class feature.

A ring of dimunition - my male half-elf wizard rescued a storm giantess NPC and the two fell in love. He crafted this ring for her; allowing her to assume medium size only. It made life easier for the two of them.

Made a mistake one night, and accidentally told my players that a pair of boots, that weren't actually suppose to be magical, were. While I caught my mistake, I decided to run with it, so upon identifying the boots I told my players that they were a barely magical pair of boots that had the ability to resize themselves to fit the wearers foot (As all magical boots do)and had the added benefit of being very comfortable.

To my surprise, I had three players roll off for the boots. The winner wore them until the end of the campaign.

Back in my 1e days I "invented" the assassin's helmet. It was a metal helm with a long, thin spike on top. As soon as it was donned the spike appeared on the inside of the helmet, striking as a level 20 assassin.

Ah, good days.

There's a lot of examples (including several of my own) in this thread.

The Exchange

a broken bag of holding that acted as a portal to a very mean devil who summoned us to the abyss (a custom made summon adventure spell). we (my party) liked to throw stuff at him through it/portable bathroom.

It wasn't custom back in the day but me and my buddies love Blatrons razor. Would never cut flesh but always stayed razor sharp... and Socks Of Dryness. If your in the military you know why just the idea of those are sexy.

Actually Alexander and MagiMaster's avatars gave me an idea (that could have been made already). Perhaps a magnifying glass that had constant comprehend languages cast upon it. If you look through the magnifying glass then you could read any language, but only if you read by looking through the glass.

A never ending roll of fluffy white toilet paper!

I had a battle royale over that little gem! 2 dead and 3 injured with the groups ranger winning by the skin of his...you can guess!

Here is my custom weapon that I based on a video game. I'll give a cookie to whoever guesses where it came from.

The Sacred Sword Alondite:
Weapon: Greatsword

Name: Alondite

Grade: Legendary Artifact

Material: Adamantine (+3,000)

Properties: Intelligent, +5 Enhancement, Courageous, Impervious∞, Menacing, Impact, Blade Beam*, Ghost Touch (+10 total) (253,050)

Intelligent Weapon Stats: Int 14, Wis 14, Cha 14
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Senses: Empathy, Telepathy, Read Languages, Magic Aura, Guidance (Free)
Traits: Says as little as possible, Can only make magical radiation noises and emanations for verbal speech, Stays quiet often, but radiates with a strong hum and bluish aura when its foil is nearby.
Base Cost: 20,000; Total Ego: 21

Total Value: 276,050 Gold Pieces

Blade Beam Description: As an attack action, the wielder strikes toward an opponent, causing a magical shockwave from a distance up to a 60 foot long, 5 foot wide line with a swing of the weapon, rolling a D20 plus regular modifiers as a ranged touch attack roll, intercepting the first target and dealing regular melee damage. The Attack and Damage rolls are calculated as a regular melee attack, but the damage type is treated as Force damage instead. Critical Hit feats (outside of the Impaling Critical feat) may also be applied. This attack can critical as though the wielder was using this weapon in melee combat, but can be stopped or rendered harmless through spell resistance. The wielder uses its character level plus the weapon's enhancement bonus as its modifier for its spell penetration roll. The attack penetrates through the first target to all targets within the line. Feats such as Power Attack, Vital Strike, their improved versions, as well as their correlated feats and class features (such as Devastating Strike and Furious Focus) can be used in conjunction with this action, incurring properties and penalties as normal, but causes the ability to become a full-round action. This can only be activated on your turn, not during attacks of opportunity, and can be used at will, though the target must be out of melee reach in order for the bearer to use this ability.

Hardness: ∞
Hit Points: ∞
Break DC: N/A

Description: The edge of the blade shines with a powerful radiance, flowing into its ornate hilt and balanced crosser, ending at the bronzed pommel. As the bluish glimmer luminates, a sense of authority forebodes those who are unable to comprehend the power of order.

Lore: This legendary sword is a one of a kind sentient being that is a counterpart of another sword that was dual-wielded long ago by Apostle Altina. This blade, along with its sister sword Ragnell, was blessed by the Goddess of Order, Ashera, to be wielded by Altina, finely consecrated and imbued with Ashera's power used to seal away the Goddess of Chaos. Afterward, Altina founded the nation of Begnion and sealed the swords away in a secret vault. Due to being sealed for a long time, it has lost its sense of voice, but can still project thoughts and ideas into its wielder.

Requirements: Level 16, Strength 24, Dexterity 16, Combat Reflexes, Greater Vital Strike, Improved Devastating Strike

Damage: 3D6 Slashing/Force*

*Damage is changed to Force when using the Blade Beam ability.
∞This weapon is divinely consecrated to be indestructible; thusly, it cannot break, rust, or be destroyed.

SO if its an artifact, what's its destruction condition? All artifacts have those, you know. Even the divinely consecrated ones. :)

Currently running Carrion Crown, and one of the items that can be encountered is a helm of underwater action (which of course is not custom).

So, given the throwaway line that it had belonged to a Taldan Marine in the text, I added a 'snappy polished appearance' effect to it -- while wearing it, your clothes are cleaned, pressed and creased, boots shined, metalwork polished ... no actual in-game statistical effect (well, if asked I might give a slight circumstance bonus on Diplomacy/Bluff from being perfectly turned out ...), definitely not in combat.

BUT. Given the general messiness of the fighting (the Fighter ended up getting the helm) with various things pulping and splattering and gooping all over the place ...

I've probably added the words "... which of course beads up and rolls off Roland leaving him neat, clean, and perfectly pressed." over twenty times. Which is then always followed by his enthusiastic declaration of "Best! Magic! Item! Ever!"

:-)

Malachite...that's awesome. :D

My favourite was a magic key that I had created custom for my diplomat. She was also a rogue / assassin, but minor details.

You could insert it into the lock of any wardrobe and it would open with a seamless portal to her wardrobe back in her manor house. It was stocked with all the things you might expect in a well to do ladies wardrobe and was checked daily by her maids to see if anything was deposited, removed or needed to be laundered.

We'd just finished a dungeon crawl at one point for something or other and needed to present ourselves to an acaedemic meeting of some description at the local mages college. The fighter sat down and polished out his armour and tried to bang it back into shape. The wizard prestidigitated his robe clear. The cleric found a new surcoat for his armour. They all had a bath to get some of the more obvious dirt off them.

I came down in full regalia including obviously custom and well crafted ballgown, appropriate matching jewellery, shoes and makeup, and smelling of vanilla and cinnamon. I believe that the fighter's reaction was "And you just happened to have that in your saddlebags just for this occasion, did you?"

My favourite custom CURSED item though I have only heard about from another game. Cursed boots of theme music. They will play music as appropriate to whatever your doing (start a waltz, they will provide the accompaniment. Combat and you get over the top action music). I think they actually provided a +1 competence bonus to you and anyone else around doing that action... Right up until you need to stealth. As soon as you started to be stealthy, it would (of course) playing something appropriate. Your would be surprised what sort of penalty gets applied to a stealth check when your boots are playing "With catlike tread"....

The Exchange

In our current game, the quarrel accelerator is an item that, when attached to a crossbow and activated with a standard action, will cast gravity bow on the bolts. It makes an awful whirring noise that the players have come to fear.

All of my gaming friends are fans of movies like Big Trouble in Little China, so the most popular custom item I ever handed out was a Six Demon Bag. I don't remember the exact effects, but it was something like;

Roll 1d6 when opening it 3/day.
1) gust of wind
2) sound burst
3) burning hands
4) close ranged touch shocking grasp
5) acid arrow
6) summon monster 3 (1 dretch) for 6 rounds

I gave the party an endless bag of frogs. At first, everyone rolled there eyes as they pulled a male bullfrog out every turn, but now they actually fight over the item. It has been a fun roleplaying tool.

I had an idea to make a "Dwarven Helm of Drinking" which is basically a helmet with two capped steins of ale on either side, and straws leading out of them to the wearers mouth. The wearer can chug one of the steins as a swift action, and the drink will always be cold. After two drinks, the steins must be refilled. Great item for a Drunken Master, or any dwarf.

It can also be modified to hold vials of potion instead.

A pair of gloves that both acted like infinite-use drow Spider Sacs.

That's right, I got WEBSHOOTERS.

Alexander Augunas wrote:

To be honest, I never really thought of it; there was never such a capability for it to break, and the Impervious property was supposed to help represent that, though I would also go against the wishes of the concept of an Artifact, so I suppose to keep it in balance that such a thing would have to suffice.

Well, the weapon was divinely consecrated by the Goddess of Order, the infinite magic as eternal as her supreme rule. I would simply say that transporting it into another dimension or plane where the deity has no authority (or nullifying the deity's hold on a plane that she resides in that the weapon has a part of) would remove its indestructible capability, rendering it as breakable as any other weapon could be.

To add on that, it should also always transform any liquid stored into a beer of the bearer's choosing, functioning 2/day (like the Sipping Jacket).

With that said, it's a very sweet item.

+1 machete(Short Sword that dose slashing)bane plant that cast Blight once per day caster level 8th. also give +3 Reistance Bonus vs Entangle,
Plant Growth, Wall of Thorns, Spike Growth

This stuff is sweet! In the campaign I'm playing, I'm taking a lot of crafting feats. I think I'll try to craft myself a "cloak of mage's magical mansion". Whenever I need to escape, I just disappear into the cloak... Not sure if it would be doable, but it would be AWESOME!

Laying blame on my very bad handwriting...I accidentaly came up with the decanter of endless rodents!

Yup, your choice of anything from gerbils to detroit sewer rats and in rapid fire amounts...like a rat machinegun!

My heroes stole it from a temple of Yuan-ti and are still to this day fighting off attempts by snake men to reclaim it.

I just ran with my players interpretation of my hand writing and spun up a three session game based on it.

Grand Lodge

I made a crown for a king character in my campaign that had
+4 Charisma
True seeing
Commune: Great Shifter (which is a custom god)

nothing really special thought, but i love my baby helmy

Fire Emblem. Marth's sword. Ragnel is Ike's.

Note: Though Marth's was a longsword. So I could be wrong on owner.

Boots of combat readiness.

It is a once per day up to 4 people use of swift gridling (the spell that puts you instantly in your armor).
Ends up being pretty cheap and useful.

Actually, I believe that Alondite is the personal weapon of the Black Knight. Marth's sword is Falchion (that's the sword's name).

No additions from me, but a lot of the stuff here is awesome! I like how a lot of it is slips of the tongue that end up being thrown in anyway. Just goes to show that improv is the most important DM skill of all.

I really like enchanting masterwork tools with competence bonus on the craft. This is relatively cheap and effectively cheats around needing lot's of ranks in one skill.

No throwing stones that explode? A magic potion that can make you see things no one else can see, do things no one else can do? Not even a legendary "Nice Knife?" Son of a B1#*h must pay...

I had a DM NPC wu jen in a 1e Oriental Adventures game that had a six demon bag. Through it he contacted actual demons and sold various pieces of his soul for the perfect power for any occasion. When he met the characters no one asked him his name, they all just called him Woo.

Set, as always your stuff is amazing.

I haven't made silly items for a while. Last custom item I made was a Deadeye Flask; a flask everfilled with a mild liquor that never gets one scnockered, just a mild buzz (create water, prestidigitation). It is given to members of an elite skirmisher group called the Thornwalkers and they give them as a reward to successful new members.

The flask has an added function. 3/day as a Swift action a long pull can be taken that actually sharpens the senses granting a +1 on the next ranged attack or sight-based skill check such as Perception, Sense Motive or Survival (track). The power comes from a Guidance effect that can infuse into the whiskey in the flask.

we have name for then its ....adult...but its a round cake with a cherry on top

T!^^y Cakes
the magic and falor are so powerful it can bring a creacher back to life by having it put in their mouth and force feeding them as the spell resurrection unlike the spell the body must have a mouth.

If eaten when alive the magic of the cakes turn on the consumer after tasting it the consumer give up on life knowing that there is nothing better, dc30 will save or die only a wish can bring someone back how has failed this save.

Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, resurrection ; Cost 30,000 gp

i had to add that last part after a player had to use one then roleplayed his addition to the cakes. After which he became the trial by error trap finder.

Ventnor gets a cookie.

Marth's sword would probably be a Longsword. Could possibly be a bastard sword also, or most likely a Falcata to symbolize the X3 critical of what Fire Emblem criticals generally symbolize.

I vote Falcata.

This is awesome. A friend of mine is supposed to be running a scenario of some kind at a local convention and I mentioned this item to him earlier today. He really liked it as well.

The Exchange

My team in skulls and shackles decided we wanted to make a barrel that once opened summons an endless chain of mad monkeys as per the spell which summons a monkey swarm.

'Hack Burton', an intelligent bastard sword that could talk, I printed out all the quotes from Jack Burton of Big Trouble in Little China and then Hack constantly referred to his wielder as 'Wang', Jack's sidekick from the movie. Splint Eastwood was in that same campaign.

http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/metzger/items/codpiece-of-tar-bolen

Price: 7,600 GP, Moderate Transmutation

This mighty codpiece is made for any creature size large or bigger. If a medium or smaller creature wishes to wear it without penalty, they must have a Comeliness score of 17 or higher. Creatures not meeting this requirement take a -5’ movement penalty.

After this codpiece has been worn for 24 hours, it grants the wearer a + 4 circumstance bonus on diplomacy checks to persuade the opposite sex. In addition, the self-confidence from wearing this piece also grants a + 1 to armor class (profane).

This protection provides heavy fortification to critical hits inflicted upon the groin.

Crafting: Caster Level 9, Craft Wondrous, Enlarge Person, Warp Wood, Cost: 3,800 GP

Tar Bolen , the hero of Desolace wore a similar codpiece in his epic battle with Moltantaticous. It is said that this hand-crafted brass support offers protection with elegance.

As a younger gamer I always wanted to have an army of war chickens. And to remedy that later when I was given the opportunity of DMing I always placed an Endless bag of War Chickens in my campaigns somewhere. If held open it would spill armored chickens into the square the user occupied. The chickens would spread out creating difficult terrain for everyone but the wielder and deal 1 lethal damage a round. The chickens would dissipate after 3 rounds (In sort of a water ripple effect, so first the square the bag was opened then the next square out, etc).

I always flip flopped on whether the bearer had to stand in the same square or not. Usually they had to at least drop the bag or stay in the square somehow.

Gloves of the Silent.

A pair of gloves that uses silent image to make words appear in a language the wearer knows when they use sign language.

You know, subtitles. ;)
