Spellslinger / Magus Class Advice - Help -

Advice

I am trying to put together a Spellslinger 1 / Magus 19. However, I have some questions about how I should put it together. I have read Walter’s Guide to the Magus at length, and I am aware of its advice. I would like input from any who’d lend their time to this, and it would be greatly appreciated.

 >Human, Dervish Dance/Agility build

- Attribute Stats (25pts):

STR – 10, DEX – 18, CON – 14, INT – 16, WIS – 12, CHA – 8

 *I went with high DEX with the theory in mind that it was more important that spellstrikes connected and spells did not go to waste.

- Traits: Focused Mind, Magical Lineage (Shocking Grasp)
- Racial Traits: Focused Study

 *I took this alternate racial trait to boost my stealth, and disable device so that I might work as a rogue if it called for it. If anyone has a better idea of what other skills I should use this for please submit them.

 >Should I use the Words of Power spell system as it would VASTLY open up the amount of spells I would be able to cast through the arcane gun via the Spellslinger, or is it not a viable choice. Keep in mind that I intend to be primarily a blaster.

>What kind of role/performance should I expect from this build? Frontline fighter (or will the Spellslinger’s hit on BAB be too much)? Backup caster? Weak ranged combatant? Which of the core classes is the Magus most akin to in terms of combat performance and the damage they are able to deal?

 >What kind of combatants will the Magus be strong/weak against?

>I am trying to build a character that can be used in all situations, and I would like to know if this is an unrealistic goal. I am hoping that the Magus will have good enough melee potential, spell blasting capabilities, and infiltration viability.

>I’m a bit strained for feats. I’ve decided on taking the following: Arcane Strike, Dervish Dance (if I don’t go Agility Enchantment), Weapon Finesse, Weapon Focus. Beyond that I can’t decide. I have noticed that the pistol lacks a little punch, but I don’t know if or how many feats I should sacrifice to make it more potent.

>Should I take a archtype to make my Magus more combat capable like the Bladebound or Myrmidarch?

>What should I be spending my Arcane pool points on? Enchanting my weapon, recalling spells, Magus arcana’s, etc?

 >Any other general advice about the construction of a level 1 Spellslinger/19 Magus.

Thank you all greatly for your help.

dervish dance only works on melee, scimitar attacks... so I assume you are one-handing a scimitar and the other hand has a pistol?

My suggestion would be to get a pistol dagger or pistol swordcane. Make this your black blade. This prevents your pistol from breaking on you, and you are now only using one weapon (though it DOES get enchanted as a double weapon)...

As I am sure you noticed, the arcane gun and mage bullets abilities just require "spells" - so any classes' spells (including divine!) work just fine to power it... meaning all of your magus spells are fine. Again, figured you know this, but spelling it out for any other posters to the thread.

I was going to use one in my hand at a time either the pistol or the scimitar that way I'd have one hand free to cast spells.
And I do appreciate that you outlined the Mage bullets used all spells. I had kind of assumed that, but its good to get some confirmation on that.

If you are wanting free hands for spells, I highly recommend a pair of Glove of Storing, one for each hand, and alternate between the scimitar and the pistol.

"The wearer may not use another item (even another glove of storing) that also uses the hands slot."

A glove of storing for the scimitar and a weapon cord for the pistol (or vice versa) would still work.

OP: You may want to consider the myrmidarch archetype to open up additional options with the pistol (at the cost of some spell slots). Words of Power is a decent choice if you want to really focus on damage, but it will hurt your versatility outside of damage/save-or-suck spells; the Experimental Spellcaster feat can let you pick up a small selection of effect words without limiting you from gaining all the "bread and butter" spells.
