Gained Intelligence... bonus language question

When I hit an attribute bump at 4. If I have a 17 INT and bump that to 18 I qualify for an extra language. Do I have to pick one of the ones I got as options during character creation or since I gained this new intelligence while adventuring I can pick any bonus language as if I had taken the linguistics skill?

I have read a few posts on languages gained and all agree that you get a new language retroactively when you gain INT, but no one clarified if it has to be one of the few choices you got at character creation or if you could pick from any of the others in the game.

I'm a gnome have a Hafling party members... seems like I could benefit from Hafling, but my options left to choose from are Dwarven, Giant, and Goblin. Is this an ask your GM type of question or are there actual rules on which languages are "legal"?

Shadow Lodge

I think its an ask your GM if your party can teach you a language, I would allow this myself.
Not sure if character creation limitations hold.

Remember you also get retro skill points as well.

Bonus languages granted from Intelligence have to be taken from your bonus languages list for each race.

Ranks in Linguistics can grant any language.

Liberty's Edge

Per this FAQ, you do gain a bonus language if your INT score goes up.

It would be odd if you could only select from racial bonus languages for this newly acquired language 'slot'. After all, once you start adventuring, you could be exposed to many more languages. Check with your GM. My guess is that he/she will allow you to take any language as long as a teacher could be found.

If it is for PFS, you would be restricted to bonus languages for your character's race (as Rynjin suggested).

OK, but when you are a Wizard and have say +7-8 INT at later lvl's and only 5-6 starting bonus languages what happens?

Shadow Lodge

I know it was ruled that languages gained from your intelligence score have to be racial bonus languages, but I don't think that was the intent behind a level 4/8/12/16/20 bump to intelligence when levelling up.

Surely in that instance, it's treated the same as putting a point into Linguistics?

Officially, no. No distinction is made between Int-based bonus languages gained at first level and Int-based bonus languages gained at later levels.

Basically, while what you're suggesting is an entirely reasonable house rule, by RAW (and thus in PFS), you're restricted to the racial (and occasionally class) bonus language list.

But what about int increases for instance from an ioun stone or headband of intelligence? (they have a language associated with them as per the FAQ).

Following this logic, you only gain a bonus language if the language happen to be on your racial list.
Kinda sucks if you ask me.

No. In that case, it's a magic item actually granting the language, and as such the bonus list restriction isn't applied.

It's a special rule, like how the ranks granted by the item don't stack with any ranks you already have, potentially leaving you with less total skill ranks than if you simply had a natural increase of Int mod.
