Where would you put dinosaurs in Varisia?

Advice

All my players want dinosaurs!!! I would like to know if any of you could see a place in Varisia where there could be dinosaurs? I most likely will build a session around the area with cr 3-7 encounters.

In Varisia? I don't see it.

In the Inner Sea Region? The Mwangi Expanse for sure. Are your players looking to HAVE dinosaurs (familiars, animal companions, mounts, etc?) or to FIGHT them? If the former, simply have them be from somewhere else.

The Exchange

Just introduce a mysterious portal anywhere in Varisia you like*. Once you're beyond the portal... dinosaurs. Better yet, suddenly, dinosaurs! and introduce the portal at the end of the adventure, to explain why the PCs were attacked by a stegosaur carrying 20 goblins earlier on. Of course, then you get into who created the portal, why they chose to connect it to Dinotopia, how long it's been there, and why dinosaurs haven't come through before, but I feel confident in leaving these questions unanswered as an exercise for the reader.

* As long as it's on the ground floor. A magical wardrobe that occasionally produces an allosaur should not be installed on the fourth floor of a tenement building.

they have downtime between burnt offerings RORL.....want to find/train dinosaurs for animal comp/ mounts. they are level4/5 and I figured if they get bored in-town then I would give them a challenge.

sounds good, but I just need enough for half session. out of a group of 7 pcs, only 2 enjoy in-town sessions lol

Hmm...

A wealthy (and conveniently evil) eccentric has shipped exotic creatures from across the sea to [insert nearest Varisian port city here] in order to add them to his grand menagerie. After the PCs foil whatever evil he's up to, the authorities ask them to do something with these bizarre creatures in the ship's hold...

If I were to hazard a guess, if you wanted a dinosaur of some kind, you could probably find something in kaer Maga.
Why?
They trade with Urglin, which is considered part of Belkzen and independent at the same time. Belkzen has access of course to dinos from Wyvernsting thanks to its bordering of the Realm of the Mammoth Lords, which is chock full of dinos and other meaty beasts.

ran a session last night...ugh

after telling him he found no proof there is dinosaurs in Varisia, he took half the party to Magnimar. I told him there is a 30% chance he could find exotic animals like dinosaurs in this big city. Rolling for each breed, he was able to find a t-rex and a stegosaurus. Unfortunately that was not good enough for him since he only wanted an allosaurus. he then rolled his eyes, said I was making it too difficult, and jumped on a boat with another pc exclaiming "well, I guess i'm going to dinosaur land!!!" when I asked him where that was,(mwangi expanse told to him earlier by the exotic pet vender), he said "that place I was told dinosaurs are....Dinosaurland!!!!" now 2 members are on a boat (1 who immediately regrets going), and the rest of the party is back in sandpoint starting chapter 2 of RORL!!! This player is our former gm and everyone at the table is upset. we had a week between chapters to train, sell magic items, craft items, or follow up on rumors and side quests. we spent the whole night listening to him complain about not having a riding allosaurus. "this was part of my original character concept". I wanted to let the rest of the pcs know that no matter how much you complain and min/max, sometimes things don't work out the way you planned.he's rolling + 13 to hit with longbow.....not enough. got a t-rex...not enough natural attacks like allosaurus....

I think there's a certain point where, as the DM, you have to say...

NO DINOS FOR YOU!!!

Never thought I'd type that. Anyways... Kill the character that wants the allosaurus, and have the other character on the boat survive and wake up back in the city. A charybdis is great for the "Yay I'm on a boat... CRAP!" feeling.

We absolutely do not ever have dinosaurs in our campaign as standard monsters... just too much genre cross-over. I mean really, can you imagine Tyranosaurs stomping around in the background of Lord of the Rings? I do, however, have creatures with similar stats manifest as 'fey' creatures of otherworldly origins, usually (but not always) when players select them as companions/familiars.

Yuck. Ask him why he doesn't just play an MMO if that's the approach he's going to take at the table.

Characters, at the very least, should be created with an eye towards the region and flavor of the campaign they are about to play. Otherwise, why not just drive a tank around Sandpoint?

I hate to think it would come to that!! it's crazy that I keep butting heads with this pc(former group gm). his min/maxing is just insane!! I gave him a t-rex and he still rolled his eyes like a child and jumped on a "boat" without roleplaying. what boat!?!?! I never told you there was a boat with a sign saying cruise to dinosaurland!! none of the other pcs at the table said a word while he dominated the town session and coaxed them to join him on his sacred dino-quest. ughhhhhhhhhhh

You can pull him aside and explain to him that he's disrupting the campaign and, as such, ruining it for the other players with his antics. Make the point that the game is about role-playing as a group, not min/maxing a specific build so that you can 'win'. Sad to say, he doesn't sound like someone who would respond to such a reasonable talking-to though, as it would seem to be self-evident to anyone. For all the discussions I see on this board, something I rarely see mentioned is the necessity of players in a group to share a common vision, even if they don't share common goals.

Personally, I wouldn't play with this individual, but I have a low tolerance for this kind of foolishness and you know your situation better than I ever could.

Follow Stalin's wisdom, kill the PC. Trust me, the other PCs will be thrilled to... Oh yeah, PLAY THE CAMPAIGN rather than waste their time dealing with Mr. Dinosaur Lover. I know that in the campaigns I play in, this BS wouldn't be worth the commute.

when the superfriends want to play flintstones you're suppose to give them a jurassic nightmare that makes them grateful to find shelter.

"undead raptors, everywhere. you don't have time to complain that your mount doesn't leave a wake of sparkles and lollipops. these things are hungry, won't sit still for wild empathy, aren't carrying treasure, and help isn't on the way."

Do the other PCs still want dinosaurs too?

If you do decide to 'kill' the character, make it the delicious irony of being killed by an Allosaurus.

Have him try to capture the Allosaurus and then unload on him. If his character is of a class which would use charm or dominate, make sure the Allosaurus is a 'awakened' one. And with class levels if you really want to put the point across.

Or you can just kick him to the curb. Yep, that works too...

What you have is a player problem and you shouldn't try to solve player behavior by punishing their characters. You have to address the player directly. Your problem is with the player, not his character. Killing his character is no guarantee that he won't be just as disruptive with his new PC. And killing players is frowned upon in most gaming groups.

The point of sitting down at the table together is for everyone involved to have fun. If you can't get him aligned with that way of thinking, you don't need him at your table.

reason? you are playing the ineffible unforgiving universe. reason is neither here nor there. if you are goign for realism, go for consequences. stories with people obsessed with catching a monster don't typically end well for a reason. if ahab wants to go down that path let it be paved with sacrifice and tragedy.

Universe>Crazy, Dinosaur Loving PC= Kill PC

There, mathematical proof to kill the PC. In my experience, people, especially ones wi would cause these problems for their character concept, can get connected to their characters. By killing their PC, you sever that link, and bring them back to reality. THEN you can deal with the player himself.

But I can picture John Carter, Conan, or even Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser taming or battling the beasts. Still, I know what you mean: a campaign's contents need to relate to its overall theme. No polar bears in the Great Pyramid Campaign, and so on.

I would let him get his dinosaur, but he will have his cake and eat it too. Everyone goes ahead with the ROTRL modules and he does his own thing.

Unless they were awakened polar bear archaeologists. Then again, with that logic, I could see a dinosaur being a monster Sauron created to kill humans.

If you really want a place to put dinos in Varesia, I would recomend the Rift of Niltak.
Very foggy valley, basicly unexplored, and the few that do manage to come back from explorations are all insane.
A few volcanic vents to make it nice and steamy warm (and dangerous to get into and out of), swamps and warm lakes, dinos and snakemen and lizard tribes and whatever 'Land of the Lost' stuff you want to put in.

And then you can just do horrible things to his character if he decides to go there. Because everyone who went in never came back out, or came out insane (which is why you have snakemen and lizard tribes to perform the sanity bending worship of 'elder gods' to cause insanity or death).

The Exchange

Or - worse yet - they're performing sanity-bending worship in order to keep the real source of Niltak Rift Madness from... spreading.

Silver Crusade

Bran Towerfall, the easiest way I would handle this is instead of giving him a dino pet s this might disrupt the campain give him a dino figurine of Fabulous power dino type you want. This would let you as a gm test it out and satisfy your player. Win for both of you.

In this case, I'd tell the dino-lover to bring in a replacement character, as the trip to "Dinosaurland" will take at least four months in-game. (It's like sailing from Seattle to Lima, Peru, plus the fun of sailing through the permanent hurricane). Then, it will take time to find and capture an allosaurus, then it will be another four months to return (assuming he can find a ship willing to carry a live allosaurus!)

Tell him you'll run a personal side-quest in the Mwangi Expanse about trying to capture a live allosaurus at some point in the future. But for now you want to get on with the campaign, so he needs to bring in a new character that fits the campaign. And a dino-rider will NOT fit the campaign.

Or... if I wanted to be mean, after he explained the kind of creature he was looking for, somebody tells him that there are tales of such a creature lurking in Tanglebriar in Kyonin. And then send him off to try to capture Treerazer!

love the Ahab reference!!!

the thought of a dead ranger being forever tied to the back of an allosaurus while he roams the wilds of Varisia is just awesome.

nothing better than creating a whole new universe/setting so one crybaby pc can get or be killed by dinosaurs...lol i'm all for doing an encounter where he gets his prized allosaurus only to wake up from a dream. no, that's just mean....nicer to just kill him

I would never put Dinosaurs living in Varisia.

However, if you really want to let your players face them, I could see a Shoanti druid, who has left Varisia to explore the world and now returned and riled up his tribe (or trying to take it over?), summoning dinosaurs to face the party as they intervene.

cr 25 treerazer!!! UPDATE--other party members who are frustrated like I am have convinced him to get a big cat. he is begrudgingly going to take it once he found out it has pounce and rake giving it 5 attacks on a charge and being 5th level with boon companion. dinosaur who?!?!? forget that, my big kitty has 5 attacks and I can dress it up like a dinosaur and ride it at level 7!!!!!

Over in the Ask James Jacobs' Anything thread, he's said that technically dinosaurs can be found anywhere on Golarion. They're by no means limited to the Mwangi Expanse. They're certainly present in places like the Realm of the Mammoth Lords. Or heck, maybe some of them wandered up from Orv, which is actually where they're supposed to have originated. If dinosaurs are technically native to the Darklands, they can probably pop up anywhere. There's no reason Varisa can't have a small population of dinosaurs. Heck, maybe you can even make a plot hook about it. "Oh, yeah, a pack of dinosaurs wandered into our area from some nearby caves. Can you deal with them? They're kinda making themselves a nuisance to our livestock."
