From the Brazen Peaks to the Zho Mountains, the deserts between sigh with hot winds, and danger lurks behind every dune. Yet, the caravans keep moving, and trade endures.

Come, Adventurer, spend your gold here, in my humble stall, and we shall trade--not only for goods, but for stories of the desert, of the wonders of Katapesh, and the majesty of Qadira! I will tell you of the wonders of the Peculiar Emporium, and the dangers of the Nightstalls. I will recount to you the sights and smells of glorious Katheer, the city of a thousand caravans! And you, Brave Traveler, will you tell me of the ruins of El-Fatar, Kelmarane, Al-Bashir, or Shadun? Or perhaps you have ventured to the Zolurket Mines, testing the rumors that they are still full of ores and riches? No? Oh well…here then, peruse my wares! Exotics from Bug Harbor! A carpet from Gurat! I’m told it can fly, if you know the command word! Wait! My friend! I’ll give it to you for 100 gold! 50! Do not walk away from such a bargain!

Goal
The goal for the fanzine is to create a collection of fan-created articles and supporting art set in Paizo’s Pathfinder Campaign Setting world of Golarion.

The theme for Wayfinder #10 will be The Sands of Golarion: Katapesh and Qadira! Please use the Inner Sea World Guide as your main reference (as well as that handy-dandy PathfinderWiki)! In the case of a plethora of articles on similar subjects, preference will be given to articles that follow this theme. As always, crunch (classes, spells, magic items, etc.), fiction, and flavor (people, places, organizations, events) articles are welcome!
In addition, writers can submit to one of several regular series featured in Wayfinder:

  • Advice: Have some advice you want to pass on to new GMs or players to the world of Golarion?
  • Bestiary: New creatures to terrorize your PCs with!
  • Golarion Gazetteer: Places or towns on the Inner Sea maps that have little to no information on them in the campaign setting literature. Expand and explore!
  • Of Chance and Skill: Games, new to or adapted for Golarion, to play at your table!
  • Prestigious: This article is devoted to a new prestige class for the world of Golarion.
  • Realm Building: The Kingmaker Adventure Path introduced a lot of new goodies for building armies, cities and kingdoms. This column is focused on building upon those rules.
  • Side Treks: Side treks feature short outlines for a sidetrek adventure set in a particular Pathfinder adventure, from the products listed below. One side trek outline per submission for this column. Please reference earlier Wayfinders for the layout for this article. Submission size: 325 words.
  • Tales from the Front: Fiction articles based on any of Paizo’s adventure modules or paths.
  • Weal or Woe? Two NPCs (including statblocks), one helpful, one not so much. Include hooks for the PCs to know (or hate) this NPC and how to use them in a campaign. Include a boon (Weal) and drawback (Woe) for the NPCs in your article. Please reference earlier Wayfinders for the layout for this article.

Guidelines

  • Thou shalt not disregard canon, thou shalt build upon it.
  • Keep in mind thy audience. Keep it PG-13. No slash fic/porn fantasies, cheesecake/beefcake/fan service.
  • Short and sweet. Unless otherwise specified, article sizes are 750 and 1,500 words. These are HARD targets, not a range, so come as close as possible to these targets. Coming in too far under or over these targets will likely result in the rejection of your submission. Anything over 1,500 words must be pre-approved by the Editor-in-Chief.
  • Stick to the theme. An article on frost giants in a desert-themed issue is not going to make it. Sorry.
  • Submissions used to defame, harass, or threaten board members are not tolerated.

Submission Instructions

  • Conditions for Submissions. All authors and artists must agree to have their works reproduced for this and other Wayfinder products, be it for translations into other languages (we will be responsible for the truthfulness of the translations), special publications, or use on a Wayfinder website. All of Wayfinder’s publications are NON-PROFIT, and authors and artists will be given proper credit where due.
  • Send all submissions to: wayfinder.fanzine@gmail.com with the subject line containing “Wayfinder #10 Submission”.
  • All text submissions must be submitted in DOC or DOCX format (doesn’t matter if you use Office or OpenOffice). Note: Files sent in RTF, TXT, or any other format than DOC will be rejected.
  • Do not use fancy fonts or colors or styles for formatting - these will get stripped out in the editing and layout process. Use the standard body font for the program you’re using - bold and italics are fine.
For tables, please make them tab delimited. Fancy formatted tables just get reduced to this format anyway.
  • Include your name and board name as text at the very beginning of your submission - example, “Liz ‘Lilith’ Courts”. We compile these in a folder, and if we open up the file, and your name is absent, it’s hard to credit you. So, don’t make us hunt for you name, OK?
  • Your entries will go through editing passes for clarity and concision. Depending on time constraints, you may or may not receive feedback on the editing process and your script.
  • DEADLINE: September 30, 2013, 11:59 Pacific. All entries will be handled on a first come, first serve basis. Some articles may be rejected depending on the final size of the PDF.

Advertising

  • Fan projects operating under Paizo’s Community Use Policy are welcome to advertise their websites and materials.
  • Third party publishers wishing to advertise their Pathfinder Roleplaying Game-compatible projects in Wayfinder #10 are welcome to advertise as well. Space is available for 1/4, 1/2 and full page ads.
  • Email wayfinder.fanzine@gmail.com for questions about placing an ad. Be sure to include “Wayfinder #10 Advertising” in your subject line.
  • RESERVE YOUR AD SPACE BY October 31, 2013.
  • ADS MUST BE RECEIVED BY November 30, 2013

Pesh mummies, arise!

Also, I think an article on a Katapeshi cult of the Old Ones might be in order...the King in Yellow would do well there, methinks.

Then again, perhaps it's time for Orrin D'Vaul to get over to that end of the Inner Sea...

Dot!

Dark Archive

I'll start thinking of some new monsters and a weal or woe article

I'm the first one to submit! Enjoy my new PrC- I made it in advance this time!

Nice one Quicksdraw!

Gonna try a Weal and Woe this time around. This is Sarenrae territory after all...

Silver Crusade

As we are in Sarenrae territory.. I have many thoughts as to how I wish to go about talking about the Great Church of Sarenrae...

Hot topic, I'd say!

Working on an encounter (have been for last few weeks - needed adjustment following the first play test) - first time for me trying something this meaty so kind of nervous on this one.

What about art submissions?
Do you have specific guidelines/formats?

More monsters!

In fact, I just got an idea... I'll have to think more about it.

Typically art is assigned based on the articles available- so usually after they've had time to root through article submissions. I think Tim could answer better, but I don't think it would hurt to send in a link to your work just so he can figure out what suits you when the time comes.

Please write a Hastur article and then ask Tim to have me draw stuff for it. Cthulhu's fun and all, but Hastur's my dude.

Katapesh has jungle and swamp too, you know.

Hastur... Hastur?

I have soooo much I could do with this because of my Legacy of Fire game.

Short Story, Weal and Woe, short adventure, magic items, location article...

I wonder if I should just submit everything and see what will be accepted or if I should submit the stuff I like the most.

You are on, sir.

Shadow Lodge

so i've been wondering for a while...what ever happened to the "ask-a-shoanti" stuff?...is it possible to write more of those or are they the property of a specific individual who just stopped writing them?

Hmm....*gears begin turning*

Ohhh, look out for a surprise everybody! I just loved our joint venture, Curn!^^

I might try a submission...though this would be the first time I have tried to get anything creative I have written subbmitted for anything. Also...desert theme...not my strong point. But nothing ventured nothing gained.

Actually, I was so inspired by Curn_Bounder's work that I had to change something in mine. Replacement piece submitted!

With repeated rumors of Osirion-themed AP, can we hope to expand the next Wayfinder's theme to include Osirion?

No longer rumored!

With The Mummy's Mask announced as the next AP, starting in February 2014, it is indeed possible that Wayfinder #11 could be Osirion-themed. The main problem with that, though, is timing. If #11 would be Osirion-themed, submissions would be due at the end of March. That would give folks less than 1 month to start assimilating the new Osirion content put out by Paizo....and there will be the AP, and two supplements.

So, I'd really like to give fans more time to utilize everything that Paizo produces, in order to give fans all the content there is to draw upon, and to avoid Wayfinder contradicting/duplicating the new content that Paizo will be putting out.

So, an Orision-themed Wayfinder would be better timed if it were #12, at least.

Tim

As long as #13 is the cursed issue...

dotted for reference.

Quick question about art. If we make some, can we submit it with our article? What about maps for the side trek line?

Shadow Lodge

Ohh I might have to throw some of my new caravan rules in there if we are talking about trade routes...

So...the way we handle illustrations is that we maintain a roster of volunteer artists that we contact, and then assign various articles to them to illustrate in their own way. If you want to provide an illustration with your submission, that is fine. If we choose your article, and like the illustration, then yes, we could indeed use it. BUT, I cannot guarantee anything.

What I would rather artists do is contact us, and send us a link to their gallery, so we can see it, and then make that call ourselves on who illustrates what article. There are exceptions of course, but we like going with our roster.

As for maps, I want to be clear about side trek articles (which are short ones) and side trek adventures (which are 3000 words or so, and based on a Weal or Woe article). The side trek articles really don't have maps...they are short adventure ideas. The side trek adventures, on the other hand, do have maps, but authors make rough ones that we hand over to cartographers to make really, really awesome and detailed. If you are one of those people who do really good maps....again, you really need to be on our roster for that. We need map makers!

However, for the side trek adventures, those are not included in the open call, they are assigned by the editor in chief. After we get all submissions, we select a Weal or Woe article, and then ask fans with some PFS scenario or adventure writing experience to develop the side trek adventure based on the two NPCs from the WoW article.

I think Drejk was asking whether the "Sands of Golarion" theme for #10 could/would be expanded to include Osirion. Then content would be available upon character creation for the new AP. That does preclude using the new content as starting points of course.

Sovereign Court

I would be more psyched for a completely Osirion themed issue. It really does stand on it's own much better than many nations.

I'll be doing a fiction piece for this one. So, count me in!

1,500 words or less??

Ouch...

My article on the Gnolls of Golarion is proably much bigger than that.
It encompasses as much flavor as crunch...

I will see what I can do to cut it down.

I'm in this boat too. I'd rather hold out for a whole issue. Heck, we'll have a lot more toys to play with there after Mummy's Mask hits. :)

Read the guidelines! Those are hard targets! 1500 words.....not "or less"!

If that's the case, perhaps you should have two submissions.....one crunch, and one flavor?

Sovereign Court Wayfinder, PaizoCon Founder

Adding Osirion to #10 on top of Qadira and Katapesh would dilute the issue, mostly because everyone would write to Osirion, and the other two would have only a couple articles each. No, Osirion NEEDS an issue to itself, and Mikaze nailed it....we need to wait and see all the goodness that Paizo brings with the AP first, so we have more to play with.

Another quick question: If I were to submit a Bestiary article, are there restrictions on introducing new playable races? Would that be an auto-reject? Would a player race be better suited to its own article?

Hmmm...

I may have to submit something for this...

Are monster templates suitable submission for bestiary?

If yes, I assume the entry should include an example of ready to use creature made with that template?

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Drejk, that's what I did with the Sin Dragon template in Wayfinder 7 - presented the template and then a specific creature using the template. Worked pretty well, but watch out for repetition of ability text eating your word count.

I'll be in for Wayfinder 10, for sure!

Ambrosia Slaad's Skindancer fit into Wayfinder #7's Bestiary just fine. You should be good to go. :)

I'm tempted to make "Tourism In..." attached to a less-expanded-upon location a regular thing for Wayfinder after the success of the Darklands one (that reminds me, whatever happened to the ideas for a Darklands kingmaker conversion?). Time to go hunting through the Katapesh and Qadira books for an interesting locale!

I'm also tempted to write a short adventure JUST so I can have a rooftop chase scene.
