So. It seems these are the two source books I am missing, alas.
Thus, the ISWG has to suffice. Let's see what kind of antagonistic pair I can whip up for this one.
Thanks by the way, Tim, for clearing up the issue about side trek adventures and articles.
Seems, I have to try harder to get an adventure tied to my WoW!

I know what that's like, I'm catching up myself with PDF products for my missing items. They are great stop-gaps until I can get the print editions from my Game Store.
I must be in a generous mood today, Legacy of Fire Players Guide should be in your downloads as you read this :)
Enjoy.

Me: Woo-hoo, ideas! Four monsters should totally be enough for a bestiary article.
Computer: You sure?
Me: Yeah yeah. Here. I finished the stats. How much farther do I have to get to 1.5k words?
Computer: ...we're at just over 1,700 words.
Me: ...sonuvacrap. TIME TO DO SOME CUTTING!
Four monsters? 1,700 words total?
They must be tiny-sized...

Great to see people plotting and scheming and coming up with things for this issue!
A few responses to some posts are in order, I think.
1. Anyone can submit fiction. As a general rule, I will take 750-word fiction submissions directly.
However, the 1500-word articles are most likely coming from the community pool that is Pathfinder Chroniclers. They have their own solid writers' group over there, and they help each other out with their stories, editing, and so forth. The finished piece is very solid and polished, and needs very little work by us. The group usually sends us 4-5 stories, and we pick the ones that fit our issue the best.
We do make exceptions, though. Stuff that's really good to hard to say "no" to!
As for bigger fiction articles (3000-word ones), those need to be cleared by me, the Editor in Chief, beforehand.
2. Bestiary entries are not separate articles. They, therefore, do not quite hold up to the 750 or 1500 word limits. Most monster entries are 300-500 words, with the playable race ones hitting 750. As a general rule, no monster entry should be over 750 words in length. Anything longer merits being its own article.
3. Todd Stewart should TOTALLY submit something. Email us, Todd. Let's do something special!
4. YAY! I get Crystal back! YAY! Liz, too!
5. Concerning artists....if you are one, and you want to illustrate articles for Wayfinder, then all you need to do is email us, tell us that, and point us toward your online gallery (DeviantArt or the like). I LOVE finding new artists. I LOVE seeing you show off your talent. And I LOVE recommending artists to 3PPs looking for new talent.

Hi Timitius,
I have PM'd you a link to a google doc copy of my work as it currently stands. I hope it falls into that bracket above :), but would like some feedback as to whether I am chasing up a blind alley / working on a hopeless cause before I run out of time to come up with something else to submit.
The reason for asking is that the article is looking like its going to be around 2500 words and I simply cannot see much fat to trim so to speak.
Just mentioning it here in the hope you see one or other posts.
Many thanks in advance for your kind attention and time.

Thank the Nine. Is there a limit as to just how many monsters can be submitted?

No limit, but I'd rather see QUALITY over QUANTITY. Just keep that in mind. No need to swamp us. Just send your best ones.

Possible final question: Should I send each monster individually, or just send them as a bunch?

If they are related (variants of a type of creature) then together in the same document is fine. Otherwise, submit each monster separately. BE SURE TO PUT YOUR NAME IN A BYLINE AT THE TOP of each document.
Cannot tell you how often people submit something, but never put their name on it! Annoying!

For example Bloated Devourer Ghoul and Gaunt Ascetic Ghoul were submitted together for Wayfinder #9 as single ~750-word long file.

That's why pre-made monster entry is your friend. It contains all the parts of standardized monster entry and your name in right place and you just fill in the numbers and abilities. People do keep such monster entries, right?
Drejk |
Drejk there's a pre-made monster entry? where?
The closest to pre-made monster entry would be bestiary introduction from PRD - requires copy-pasting and removing description of each line. I wrote my own using the one above as a base (i.e. instead of copying and pasting I wrote each line manually) and keep it on google drive for easy access.
I have a folder on my computer with a set of templates for various stat blocks: monster, npc, magic item. It saves a lot of time and trouble. Wouldn't be hard to insert a byline at the top of those. (I don't, but then I'm pretty good at remembering to put my name on things.)
I use that too. The difference between the template for submissions and template for personal use is the presence or absence of my name on the top of it.
Set |
I've saved a few versions of templates from the rpg superstar competitions. You'll need to reformat (and drop bbc coding), but they tell you how Paizo does it...
That's, like, half of my time anyway, either adding the boldface or italics BBC codes or stripping them out, and then adding or cutting words until I hit the proper word count.
My only problem with the templates is that when I see a line for something like 'Aura' I end up wanting to give the beastie an aura, even if it was totally not part of the original concept. I have to consciously restrain myself from filling in all the blanks on the template.
Less is more, Set! Stay on target!

Shiny-shiny power!
I have to consciously restrain myself from filling in all the blanks on the template.
Deleting lines you know you won't be using helps. Especially if you do it early in the design process. You can always add it back if there is actual reason to add them.
Or so I keep telling myself.
Now, what aura could I add to my newest mons... Argh! Enough monsters with auras! For some time, at least.

Hey all - I need a few more play-testers and article reviewers for my side trek - it's my first attempt at something this big, so any volunteers would be most welcome.
I use google docs so everyone can see everyone's comments, and can using just a browser, add their own. This also means you can always access the latest version as my development continues (it's about 80% done now, but does need some reformatting to match the Wayfinder side trek style).
Please PM me if you are interested in helping and I will send you the link by return. Thanks all.
Anthony Adam |
And it is complete, under word count limit and in play test - phew - much harder than I thought it would be. I really learnt a lot about how few encounters actually fit in a side trek word limit, so even if I don't get chosen, it was well worthwhile.
I will be submitting this weekend after final edits and review / play test feedback!

Wow, days after a submission involving pesh (no, not pesh mummies!), I find out that the rules for pesh are hugely different in the Gamemastery Guide than they were in Dark Markets: A Guide to Katapesh.
I probably should have taken the hint from the bestiary full of critters that had no CMB or CMD scores that this was a 3.5 product and not a Pathfinder one... Doh!
Rewrite time!
Dark Markets and Qadira: Gateway to the East are *crawling* with interesting stuff to develop.
A Zephyr Guard PrC or Archetype, for instance, could be cool, as could options developed from the Unseen Hand, Gladiator's Guild, etc. (DM p 48-49)
Page 2 of DM: aGoK has a Lamashtu-masked Gnoll dual-wielding whips. I don't even care if that makes a lick of sense mechanically, it looks awesome!
What is going on with those Lightning Stones? (DM: aGoK p 5-6) There's power there, but is it power that you can take? Or power that's already being used for something, and it would be a terrible idea to weaken it and unleash whatever it is holding bound...
Are there people wearing Pactmaster masks serving as 'Pact-Bound flunkies' or whatever?
How about those simian statues with tentacled faces and scorpion tails deep within the Red Pyramid (DM: aGtK p 42)? What kind of stats would the creatures who posed for those sculptures have?
Secrets of the practitioners of Veil Magic, or Warding Magic, or Gen Magic? (Q: GttE p 24-25)
Rules for the fine horseflesh of Qadira and racing sub-rules (or even a mini-adventure) for the Histaqen (Q: GttE p 17)?
The Zenith of the Dawnflower (Q: GttE p 19) re-imagined with the monument mechanics from Magnimar: City of Monuments?

Good on you, Set!

I listened to the Wayfinder episode of Know Direction recently. I'm trying to talk my artistic spouse into scanning the art from our house and putting it up on Deviant Art, or whatever.
She took classes in Cartography while she was working for a University, so I thought she might have some interest where there's a need...
I'll let you know how I fare.

I'm planning on submitting a gazetteer/adventure site article for Al-Bashir, and maybe one on another site in Katapesh.
Al-Bashir sounds very cool. Demon cultists and gargoyles in service to Xoveron, demon prince of ruins, seem like a logical local presence, in addition to the harpies (perhaps in conflict with the harpies, seeing Al-Bashir as a place holy to their patron?).
I had flirted with the idea of a Sorcerer Bloodline based around ancient ruins, drawing power from decay and the slow destruction of time and neglect, but it's way, way down on the list of ideas percolating in my brain. Such a bloodline would likely be strongly motivated to explore places like Al-Bashir (or various crumbling or abandoned places in Osirion or the Sodden Lands).

Final Side Trek edits this weekend, play tests are back and feedback is positive. Submitting on Sunday. Which means that if it gets selected, you will all be able to go adventure inside the genie's bottle!
