15 people marked this as a favorite.

Phew! Finally, sorry for the delay!!!

Ok everybody, it's official.

Yggdrasil Fanzine is the name and free fan-submitted content for Kobold Press' Midgard Campaign Setting is the modus operandi.

And the first issue's theme will be - - - Dark Magic.

That's right, to complement the absolutely awsesome Deep Magic Kickstarter Kobold Press is currently running.

So if you have some NPC casters, new spells (can never have enough right?!?!) archetypes, stories, outsiders and abberations, eldritch poetry, magic items, mystic cookie recipes, mini adventures/side treks or anything tenuously related to the Magic of Midgard, and preferably the dark, oozing, slimy, cthonic, moody kind, then drop me a line at

oceanshieldwolf@gmail.com

with your article or article idea and I'll get the ball rolling. Typical article length is 750/1500 words much like Wayfinder. But bigger and smaller pieces are always welcome.

VERY IMPORTANT

Please, please, please label your email:

[Yggdrasil] - that way I can find your email easily, and if you can't spell it right then there's probably an alarm going off for me.....!

Same goes for artists - if you are looking to promote yourself then the odd piece in a fanzie can definitely get you some exposure!!!!

Cut off for submissions is midnight PST 31 August.

Thank you all, and here's to a fun-filled Dark Magic first issue of Yggdrasil.

Wow! I do have a couple of Viking- themed articles that didn't fit in Wayfinder for reasons of space. I don't know if they're dark enough, but wait for my submission mail OSW!

No worries Bardess, send them over - Vikings will be very useful...

Liberty's Edge

Awesome!

I don't think I'll have time to do any new illustrations, but I do have a few pieces that might work - I'd be happy to send 'em your way if you like :)

RPG Superstar 2012

I'll have something for you in a couple of weeks.

Sent- but unfortunately, I put the wrong object and can't seem to correct it. Let me know if you had the mail.
Both pieces will probably need some correction, anyway.

I wish someone would put out some sort of ritual magic.

I had this idea for a dark magic ritual:

During the night of the full moon, on unhallowed ground you sacrifice 9 of 9 types of animal each. The 9th type of animal must be a sentient species, such as human, orcs, aboleth, etc... doesnt matter.

The ritual, taking a total of 3 hours and totaling 81 deaths results in the caster losing 9 years of age. When the ritual begins you start with the least of the animals, and with their blood you paint a massive array of magical writings and arrays on the floor. You end with the people, completing the array.

no material cost, just blood and lots and lots of animals and people. The ritual requires a spellcraft check of 19, and you can take 10 when doing it. If you screw it up, you gain 9 years of age. Screw the check by more than 5, and you gain 81 years of age.

Doing said ritual and not spending a lot of time hiding it, and cleaning up after yourself is a quick way to get not just mortal authorities after you, but getting an endless stream of Maluts gunning for you.

You can also only do said ritual once every 9 years.

This is all inspired by the sacrifices at the Temple of Uppsala in the Vikings show.

EDIT:

It would be interesting to see this worked into a game where said ritual was becoming distressingly more common among wizard diabolists in Cheliax.

Hmm ... doting this for further interest. Hopefully I'll be able to provide something.

That would be great Marc!

Thanks Mike! I'm sure with Paizocon just around the corner everyone is a bit busy...

Wow. That's some dark magic. Definitely wanting to be able to take ten on that AND not wear the white robes. If you want to submit it as an article with some Midgard Campaign Setting tie-in and associated mechanics that would be great...

@Bardess - message received! I'll check it out and get back to you.

@The_Minstrel_Wyrm: Thanks for the interest - the more submissions the better! Think Dark Magic, Midgard and... well, the rest is up to you! ;)

This intrigues me... Unfortunately, I do not have any dark magic themed anything.

I may have to come up with something.

@Warhawk - the theme is more a... guideline. As in, good submissions on theme will win out over good submissions on a random theme. The emphasis there is on "good" I guess.

Let's put it another way - by all means submit what you feel like, and if you feel like writing something new on the theme of Dark Magic, well, that's good too!

Dotting.

Where would I get more info on this dark magic?

Cool ritual, but you may want to adjust your math there. 81 creatures killed in 3 hours is 1 creature every 2.2 minutes non-stop for three hours, leaving you no breaks and very little time to paint with the blood ;-)

Hopefully in this first issue of Yggdrasil Fanzine!

Seriously though, the theme is Dark Magic - be it actual physical/optical darkness or spiritual, moral or ethical darkness - so everything that might need a little Dark Magic lovin in the Midgard Campaign Setting - from new Shadowsworn archetypes, feats, spells and items and shadow magic to the darkness of Niemheim's gnomes, Margreve fungal-wights, Mharoti necro-drakes, "lost" Caelmarathi soul-binding rites found and reimagined by the goblins of the Wasted West or the mystic Hyperborean deathcry - really I'm looking for you to look into the dark recesses of Midgard or your mind and make things that go bump in the night that much scarier.

Either that or just make a Darkness oracle mystery that takes advantage of the Blind curse...hmmm sightless sonar Minotaur sailor mercenary...watch out Mharoti!!!

Just to be clear "awsesome" is a perfectly fine, nay awsesome way to spell awesome. You read it here first. In the original post. Unfortunately. ;)

This sounds great!

Are you only looking for Pathfinder content? I might have a few bits of 4e stuff that didn't make it into the Iron Gazetteer/Halls of the Mountain King that you can have if you're interested.

Let me know

Cheers

Rich

Midgard transcends editions, so I guess that's a go!!! Any "Parsantia" that ends up on the cutting room floor, or "Parsantium in Midgard" would also be welcome... ;)

Well, with that deadline, I might just send you something.

-Ben.

Oceanshieldwolf, I had a few ideas. I was thinking about some Shadow Fey magic spells and rituals, some Lovecraftian style creatures, a high level Bard NPC that utilizes dark magic and serves as an assassin for the Grandmother of Witches, some new Bardic Masterpieces of a decidedly darker bent (Invented by residents of the Margreve, the Mharoti Empire, the Empire of Ghouls, and other such locations,), and a few other ideas. Any of these stand out to you as something that you would want featured in the fan-zine?

Actually, I sent a third piece. Let me know if you received that too!

Will see what I can do ;)

Well, when i was thinking about the ritual, the animals of each species would be killed consecutively, and then you would write out the symbols. Once thats done, its time to move onto those dogs, then goats, then sheep, the cows, etc... And you don't have to use ALL the blood or anything, just some from each.

So it would be more like you have 20 minutes to ritually slit the throats of these 9 cats into whatever you are using to hold your 'paint', then draw this part of the diagram/symbols. Seems a bit less hurried when you do it that way.

I had it in my mind to have the symbols form an 8 pointed star with the center being where the sentient creatures get ganked, finishing up the ritual.

The short time period of 3 hours was to make it a little more dangerous to the person doing it. While you have SOME room for error, if you aren't prepared you are going to have a bad time.

.

Its a pretty creepy ritual, but you don't get much more 'Dark Magic' than that.

The high spellcraft check with the allowance to take 10 was also meant to restrict the ritual to being only 'safe' for experienced casters. Dabblers need to apply. You can imagine a a diabolist or generic evil a**hole with a wizard level or two attempting the ritual, and overnight aging nearly a decade. suspicious, no?

Its pretty dangerous when you think about it. All it takes is one of the 81 animals getting away to screw up your ritual pretty badly. Or for someone or something to stumble upon you and taking up too much of your time. Imagine a wild dog stealing one of your chickens when you back is turned. or a light rain shower washing away your writings.

...hmm i should add a random chance of interruption/failure. maybe something like a 5% chance to have an interruption causing a -3 penalty to the check, and a 1% chance of an interruption causing a -5 penalty?

JTibbs wrote:

You do get more 'Dark Magic,' but this is a polite forum.

It's unclear to me what this ritual does? I realize one is sacrificing a large number of creatures...but to what end? Other than a mess, what's the end result?

I don't really need to know, but you kind of need to clarify that sort of thing for an effect to be useful in a game, even if it's just for the bad guys.

-Ben.

I guess you missed my earlier post. It lets you de-age by 9 years if successful. unsuccessful you age by 9 years. Really unsuccessful, you age 81 years.

Its a fairly cheap, having no costly material component besides the sacrifices, way to grow younger for a Totally Evil Dude.

But its very messy, and fairly dangerous if you screw it up. And getting found out is a quick way to get just about everyone after your head.

Umm. In a word - yep - that all sounds like JUST what Midgard fans would like to see!!! Send me an email and we can talk!

Sounds great, looking forward to it! There was a neh-thalggu NPC with an awesome name you submitted to Journeys that I rather liked...

Bardess wrote:

I didn't get that third piece Bardess. :( Maybe check the address or send again.

Will do, Oceanshieldwolf! Also, a friend of mine is an artist and wants to know if he can get some recognition by contributing a piece or so of artwork? He said he would go along with the theme and draw out a picture on black paper with white chalk, scan it on a computer, and smooth it all out with some kind of art program. Is there anything in particular that would be particularly desirable to have art for or just something related to the theme as a general concept?

I feared so. My last mails to you encountered a server problem. Maybe I'll try with your other address.

I might have something in the works.

@TSP - at this stage an open call for artists has been made - once the submissions have been accepted I can then send out art orders.

Besides that, any and all artworks on the theme will be considered for the fanzine - either have your friend drop me a line or dirext me to their web-portfolio if they have one.

@Bardess: Received! And possibly the best of the three! ;)

@Teiidae! My Monstrous friend! By all means contribute!

I'm unfortunately not at all familiar with the Midgard Campaign Setting, and am currently too poor to purchase.

My ritual idea is free to anyone to use if they wish to.

I just finished up my work (other than possible revisions) on Deep Magic. My brain is still fairly swimming with derro insanity so if you would like something (alchemy, extracts, spells, items or otherwise) I will send it your way. I am pretty sure that I had some more Midgard specific stuff that I left out of Deep Magic.

^^ Sounds like magic most dark is afoot.

Just asking, what are things we shouldn't put in? Like if we're writing an article or what have you. I understand that Midgard is fairly dark place based off of the more horrid aspects of central/eastern europe, but where is the line?

Sounds great Mike - derro and alchemy, extracts, spells, items...I await suitably deranged magical jottings, Deep Magic cutting room floor-born or not! This issue is definitely functioning as a Midgard extra-support for that tome!

We-ell, I leave that to your discretion, but rest assured I will draw the line somewhere. I'm not sure horrid aspects of Eastern Europe is completely fair! ;)

Having said that, I'm definitely going to reverse the theme for issue 2 - it's going to be bright lights of Zobeck, gearforged scions of honour, Seven Cities chivalry, tengu heroics and paragons of Mintauran virtuousness. Definitely PG rating next time.

For now, lets dabble in darkness and dwell with denizens most dire. ;)

Sooo... Which side of the line does "Material Component: One baby for eating" fall on? You know, hypothetically.

Err. Definitely gourmand-gnoll demonic. Unless it's a baby carrot, in which case it's vegetarian. Baby vegepygmy is borderline.

Oh my dear sweet GODS! I have SO been waiting to get back into this community. Thank you Morgan!

I was just talking to Wolfgang about short stories for Midgard as a possible future project. A fluffy flavorful story with a little crunch at the end would be great. I've never tried to write fiction, but now is as good a time as any, right?

Finally an outlet for my creepy, crawly, chittering Roachlings. With a solid deadline I can write up the Orcs ecology I was going to send in to KQ. Not having that deadline is surprisingly counterproductive to my creative drive.

I'm totally hunting down some cookie recipes for you filled with darkness... and EVIL!

DoomedPaladin01 wrote:

I approve.

@ Marc - an illustrated derro would be heartily accepted. Or an illustration of a derro, without tattoos. ;p

@ Doomed - nice to see you again. Yep Orcs, roachlings and cookies or fiction related to either or both is great!!! I'm really looking forward to presenting some fiction for Midgard - I find it helps to accrete Midgard in my mind as well as expand my ideas - seeing other people's takes on it...

@ Thanks Lilith. Tea is served. Blood tea. With heart wafers. And soulbound motes for dim lighting.

Almost finished with my materials! Oh, and David should be e-mailing you in the next few days about the art, Oceanshieldwolf! Wait until you see my Bardic Masterpieces. Evil bards unite! I just left their nation of origin blank, since I wanted PCs or GMs to be able to insert them seamlessly. They still have good fluff though.

Thanks TSP! "Sounds" great! ;p

Aaaan just over 100 more backers to unlock the Adventure Path for Kobold Press' Deep Magic Kickstarter. C'mon fans of Midgard and fans of spells - let's make this happen!!!

Dotting. Nice theme to the first fanzine, OSW.

Well, it made a certain kind of sense. I'll be looking forward to a little something from you Will? I'm just over the water after all - send it by ravenz.
