The LN inevitable improved familiar is part construct and has regeneration. As such, it can't die from over damaging it. Give it a wand of shield other, have it cast it on you, and enjoy the half damage, while your familiar still lives on, slowly healing itself.
Also, purchasing a familiars satchel, found in the animal archive book, will provide total cover to tiny creatures and smaller.
