While true about the buildings, it really should be part of the learning process and ultimately it would depend on some of the stronger/larger settlements/alliances backing it to insure nothing gets too out of hand.

Really depends if the two steps from person to settlement via company is going to be a thing or not, otherwise it would take at least 3 settlements to really pull off right and I don't think that would be as practical.

Goblin Squad Member

I'm not saying a guide program wouldn't be a great addition to the game, and if we can make it work I'm all in favor. What I'm saying is that any reasonably prudent game developer in the US should very carefully investigate the legal ramifications of the decisions in the UO and AOL cases before making any decisions about whether and how to create, support, or permit anything along these lines.

Eve University isn't a relevant example for this purpose since CCP is not in the US.

Goblin Squad Member

Honestly, that's their problem. If they want to ban us from doing anything that can be construed as a teaching organization, well they can and that's fine. The specific cases you're referencing are different because they were official sponsored programs with incentives from the company. We're currently not talking about the same thing in this thread (at least as far as I am aware).

Last I checked we're all going to be helping and teaching people in our own little communities. Why is the concept of a more generically built one problematic? If allowing us to do the teaching concept is a 'problem' then by extension any community aspect is a 'problem'.

I'm not convinced the two of you are addressing the same points....

We're not, so I'll try again to make my point more clearly.

Dear Players: I love this idea and will support any such endeavor unless GW puts the kibosh on it.

Dear Devs: Please check with your lawyers and figure out what liability obtains in the context of player volunteer organizations. If there's a problem, please let us know what you need us to do or not do.

Goblin Squad Member

We are addressing the same points, but I'm being a bit abstract.

There is a problem with volunteer organizations that receive incentives from the game company and required you to participate set amounts to maintain the status. That is what UO and AOL got sued for and one of the reasons they have mostly disappeared from the MMO landscape. Those can be problematic for the Devs and should probably be avoided.

Us independently forming something like EVE University is not an inherent problem or relation to those law suits. If it was somehow construed as one, then any in game organization would be subject to the same rules and prohibitions as they are functionally, practically, and mechanically the same thing with a different theme.

The Devs are also free to arbitrarily prohibit us from doing it independently just 'cause' and that's fine too. Would suck, but fine.

Dot for later.

This is a good idea, that fits my aims in game.
Will read the thread fully when I get home.

Dear Prospective Guides and the PFO Community,

As a future guide in the Guide Program, I am happy to announce that both the settlements of Callambea and Golgotha have pledged to provide an open invitation to Guides and their new player charges to visit their settlements. Admittance to these settlements will provide an education into how each of them function, allow guests to experience what each settlement specializes in, and affords new players and opportunity to meet more of the community in the wider world of PFO.

Both settlements have likewise pledged to provide safe conduct from the starter town to their settlement, as well as protection on the return journey. The world will be a dangerous place, especially for the least experienced, and the leadership of both settlements wish to provide assistance to new players, both for the benefit of these new players, and for the positive community reputation it will perpetuate outside of PFO. Of course, this offer is only possible when the settlement in question is not in the middle of some disruptive or potentially dangerous situation (e.g. having new players scheduled to visit when either settlement does not have members available to escort them would not be feasible).

Note - This is an endorsement by those two settlement for the Guide Program. However, this is in no way a Guide Program endorsement of Callambea or Golgotha. I have said all along that when you put on your Guide Program hat, that you take off your hat for any other CC or settlement. The Guide Program is not a recruitment tool. Furthermore,I encourage any other settlement that wishes to make a similar invitation to the Guide Program to please post that desire here for future reference. The Guide Program is a community service by community members.

I love that you mentioned it not being a recruitment tool.

The guide program should be a program to promote PFO by making the learning curve easier for newer players NOT as a recruitment tool.

That has been the rule for the Program since the first post of this thread. :)

As Callambea's officer in charge of crafting and trading,I fully support the Guide Program as a unique initiative to allow new players to learn the ropes of PfO economics.

Goblin Squad Member

And as some random schmuck who hopes to learn a lot about PfO economics and pass that knowledge on to others, I support it too. :D

To start getting a better handle on the number of people who have graciously volunteered for the Guide Program, I'll start a running list of names. This list is not all-inclusive...if you wish to offer your time as a Guide, please do so and you will be added. Though EE is a while off yet, those of us with month #1 access will be learning things about the game that month #2 "subscribers" will want to know, so at least having the names handy while beginning to think about Guide Program structure seems a worthwhile endeavor.

I will list the names we have thus far.

Note - if you did not specifically say you were volunteering, I am not listing you currently (unless I already know personally you are interested), though a quick reply with your intention is all it would take to get added.

If those who are listed would reply with their month of entry, I will update it as we go, much like Keovar has been doing in the Community Introductions & Roll Call thread.

In order of original reply...

While I would make a fantastic guide, it would not be in anything remotely related to online gaming.....

Goblin Squad Member

Caldeathe, one of my favourite things to do to relax in an MMO, especially a new one, is to park my character in a quiet corner somewhere and just answer questions as they're asked in chat. It's an open question how "broad" a chat we'll have, but I'm absolutely certain that your level of knowledge of *this* game, and its lore, more than qualifies you to Guide.

You might not be one of the folks telling people how to most efficiently set up their controls, but you'll be able to tell them about Companies, and Settlements, and Reputation, and...

Goblin Squad Member

We shall see. I first need to master the whole not-bumping-into-trees thing and move on to swinging a mace in defense of my companions. Then we'll see if apoplexy has taken me out via stroke or if there is time for giving back.

Goblin Squad Member

I'm still interested in taking part in the Guide program. I'll be frequently visiting the starter towns regularly just for 'helping' new players.

As for creating a Company for the Guide Program, I think that could work as stated before if used with the 3rd Company slot.

I will sign up for hot blondes.

I may also guide some people I suppose.

Goblin Squad Member

I'm a fiery redhead, and I throw my gnome-self into the running as a guide. I may not always be available, Golgotha leadership duties will take precedence, but if I have the time I will work towards the efforts of this program.

Goblin Squad Member

See you started that off right, but then lost me at gnome.

*squints at Proxima's red-headed avatar*...Okay. :) Seriously, glad to have you, and the new people as well. I'll update the list soon.

All concerned, can I get your month of entry into EE please?

I'm in alpha.. so I assume Day 1.

Sign me up, Hobs! Always lookin' for ways to help out the community, and for reasons to visit the best watering holes along the way.

So yes, I wanted to be involved and was volunteering. You actually have me listed twice at the moment due to that. Please put me under Ixiolander as that is what my main character's name is going to be.

Thanks!

Goblin Squad Member

C'mon, Hobs, you know I'm in =P

Put me down for Alpha forward.

The avatar shows up as a dirty blonde to me, but nowhere near a ginger or auburn shade. Or red proper which is much more likely from me.

All that is only the limitations of the forum though. My natural hair color is actually a rich purple.

Oh yeah, First Day Fabulous here. Month 1 Day 1 Hour depending on when we can start downloading the client.

Says the Bleachling.

Don't be spreading your emo-curse to my people; we have to keep ourselves positive and busy and fun and active and never ever turn down an invitation to travel and experience life and everything and everybody in it or we get bored and sick and go grey and then go mad and start the killing and the burning and the terrible terrible things that live in our heads and are always whispering to us and they never go away except when we drown them out with loud music and loud colours and wild adventures and drink and drugs and sex with whatever and whoever is available and even then its a dull ache in the backs of our minds that never really goes away.

<pant, pant>

OH, LOOK. A UKELELE!

Scarab Sages Goblin Squad Member

Dear Hobs,

Thanks for the reply.

The Guide program sounds very much like it meshes with the aims of the Emerald Lodge guild; we intend to set up a safe haven, where travellers from all over the map can rest, recuperate, and resupply, between dungeon bashes.

As such, we would probably be doing a lot of what has been discussed in the thread. Helping people with their queries, and suggesting how best to equip themselves, what to watch out for.

Consider me in, I can only speak for myself, not the rest of my crew.

Regarding presents for new players; there's still a lot of unknowns re how or if recovered basic gear can be converted into other resources, but if I'm stuck with 50 dogslicers with virtually zero book value, I'd rather give them away as free backup weapons, than waste my time melting them down into slag.

Where do you find out your EE start date?
All I get is that I'm 'signed up for Early Enrolment' as part of the Kickstarter.

I'm pretty sure if you got involved in any way before they hit a million dollars, you're in on day one.

Goblin Squad Member

Dangleberry Tagnut,

Um...is that a "yes, sign me up to be a Guide" or...? :)

Snorter,

I believe if you bought into the kickstarter (not the tech-demo one...the one that bought you into the game) for EE, then you're month one. If you bought what they offer now in the store, you're month two.

As for gifts, presents, etc., based on the discussion a few pages back in this thread, that's a topic we can all kick around as we get closer to actually being in-game, and one that I suspect may simply be left up to each Guide.

What does "dot" mean? Does that mean I should put your name down for being a Guide? I've seen you use it in another recent thread, but I have no clue what it stands for.

Goblin Squad Member

You may as well count me in as well Master Hobs. Month 1 EE for me.

Scarab Sages Goblin Squad Member

@Hobs,

'Dotting' is the act of placing a mark on a thread, so it can be found later.

Posting anything in a thread causes it to show up as 'dotted', in the messageboard lists and updates.

No, that's just me being stupid.

I did consider making Tags my go-to PC in the game, as he is fun to play, but given the direction and priorities of the development, I probably won't convert Tags to PFO, unless and until they get the pet mechanics sorted.

Goblin Squad Member

I so thought that you said "until they get the pet mechanics snorted"

Goblin Squad Member

Snorter,

Honestly, I hardly ever consider to hover a pointer over a name to see who else it might be. I just don't think that way, apparently. Thanks for all the info on both cases.
