I don't know if "paladin" is the term you want to use. A character who tries to smack sense into folks will probably be lawful neutral. There are a lot of dumb people who mean well and help others.
You could probably whip up some variants to the Bane enchantment that gives the bonus damage to those who do not have a certain stat at a certain level. Just be careful with it. With enough finagling, you could have someone who beats the crap out of all animals because they have a 1 or 2 intelligence.

I don't know if "paladin" is the term you want to use. A character who tries to smack sense into folks will probably be lawful neutral. There are a lot of dumb people who mean well and help others.
You could probably whip up some variants to the Bane enchantment that gives the bonus damage to those who do not have a certain stat at a certain level. Just be careful with it. That's interesting - I'd figure the stupidest people would actually be Lawful Neutral, just because they don't have the brain to think for themselves and just go along with what other people say.

I think you're awesome, and then you say something that makes me headdesk. Here's a dollar.
Mr. Vande Brake, I would say lawful just because they would be upholding a code, just as paladins uphold a code. It's just that the paladin code is upholding good and smiting evildoers, while the, let's say, self-righteous scholar, upholds proper grammar and slaps the ruler on anyone who can't use ellipses properly or tie shoes.
I'm sure there are some dumb folk who are chaotic. Instead of just following whatever orders they are given without asking, they just do whatever they please because none of it makes sense to them.

*shudder* That's horrific - taking damage to boost stats - you'd do it to get inspiration/casting stat
Combine with immunity to non-lethal (you only said damage done, not damage taken) and a Lich wizard/cleric would have one of these guys running around just to give him a massive stat boost every day!

Your smite evil/good gains the extra property to terminate those who have no business surviving to breed.
Prerequisite: Smite class feature.
Effect: Whenever you activate your smite on a being, it will work not only if the target is of the required alignment, but also if the target of the smite has a mental stat below the racial norm and has in the last 24 hours behaved in a manner that is counter to their long-term survival and reproductive chances (annoying the owner of this feat counts if they are of higher level than the target).

This actually reminds me of an idea that I had for the FBIR (Federal Bureau of Idiot Removal)
Essentially you find two super-intelligent people in each state. 160+ IQs. Put them through a rigorous training regimen to ensure that they are mentally sound and issue them badges and firearms. Their mandate is that they can execute anyone that acts "really stupid," on sight. For instance, the person texting on the highway going 100+ MPH...dead. The woman putting makeup on at the green light...dead. The barista that charges you $4.50 for a latte and then has the gall to put a tip jar out...dead.
With only two people in the state there is very little chance that you will ever encounter them, however, there is still a chance! This would curb stupid behavior overall and lead to a safer, happier, and more productive society. Unfortunately, with the anonymity of the internet random idiots could still post their half-baked facist ideas. I guess no system is perfect though.
It's not so much stupid (the involuntary condition) but WILLFULL IGNORANCE that gets my goat. I object, for example, to someone who frequently asks to be told what time it is rather than allow me to teach them how to read the clock for themselves when they are perfectly capable of learning.

- Paladins are supposed to defend the weak. Inquisitors have no such purpose, they root out heresy wherever it is found.
- If your character's religion is one of Knowledge, Wisdom, Magic, Nobility, or Social Darwinism, then passing judgment on people just because they are stupid is perfectly reasonable, warranted, and even expected.
- Smiting people just because they're stupid is Social Darwinism. It is abhorrent to our modern morality. Paladins are poor choices for any character that does something we might consider morally wrong. Inquisitors are not. In fact, there is a line in the Inquisitor description that says they can act without fear of losing their alignment, so long as they're 'on the job' so to speak.
- Paladins are not supposed to be scary folks that rage whenever somebody does something silly. They're supposed to be honorable, diplomatic, and pure. They leave all the raging to Inquisitors.
So. Inquisitor of Irori, anybody?

Well, that works too. Unless your character is a Paladin.
Paladins defend the weak because the weak need defending. We can easily extend this to the stupid - a Paladin defends the stupid because they're too stupid to defend themselves. It would be *very* hard for a Paladin to maintain a Lawful Good alignment and uphold any kind of Paladin Code while smiting every stupid person he comes across.
But it would be very easy for an Inquisitor to do the same, because their job description is very different. Rogues, Wizards, Clerics, and Sorcerers are all prone to this behavior as a character trait or as a quirk.
The difference is that an Inquisitor can actually make this his calling, duty, and mission in life. And get paid by a church to do so. Attacking people for being stupid is not Good behavior by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it's often a villainous thing to do. Inquisitors, however, are kind of supposed to do borderline villainous things in order to get their jobs done.
You don't need to be an Inquisitor to hate stupid people. But a character built around hating stupid people would be very, very effective as an Inquisitor.
So I'll sum it up: Nothing wrong with being per se, but people who are obnoxious should be sent into exile onto an isolated Isle of the Awful.fixed.

I sometimes ponder about something that would be highly effective: Remove unnecessary warning signs. By unnecessary warning signs I mean those a person with a base minimum of common sense would not need.
I'm not talking about "Warning: May contain nuts!" (Sounds stupid, but they can't quite eliminate the possibility, and some people are very allergic to nuts)
I'm not talking about "Warning: Falling Rocks!"
I'm talking about warning signs like "Does not grant power of flight" on Superman costumes (especially those for adults). I'm talking about "Warning: Hot" on a a cup for hot coffee. I'm talking about "Poisonous" on paint.
Just remove all such signs and let things run their course.
Oh, and maybe put up video cameras for the blooper reels }>

Our society has progressed to the point where we try to keep stupid people alive. While this is good in some ways. We all have brain farts from time to time. It does not clean up the gene pool much.

Children sometimes play really hard and all it takes is one child to jump off a roof in a costume to make an adult want a warning label. Or even an actor having mental issues.{George Reeves}

See, there is a serious problem with this: The children will probably not read any warning labels. They have an excuse: They are children. Just like a child will see the tasty-looking liquid and drink it, not knowing that the stuff is supposed to go in the washing machine. This all new to this life stuff excuse is excellent, and I won't say we should sort out the "stupid children".
The thing is that the parents should supervise their children. They should make sure junior doesn't climb onto the roof, yell something about a speeding bullet and jump off. And sure, sometimes things happen - children can exploit the smallest time window and do really dangerous stuff.
My point is: Whether it is tragedy or parent ineptitude, that warning label won't help I think.
Anyway, I was aiming more towards adults' superman costumes and the like. I talk about grown men (and women) jumping off roofs. Mentally stable adults (Well, at least not those clinically diagnosed with anything that would make them require constant supervision).
