Greetings fellow Paizo forum-goers!
I'm posting this to check potential interest in an all-psionics alternate Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Adventure Path. While the AP is normally quite awesome, I've decided to mix it up a bit, as Psionics is something I've always loved but could never get my RL group to touch.
So here's what I'm thinking:
Numerous monsters will be modified to fit this new world, using the Psionic Monsters available from various sources. All spellcasters in the campaign will be replaced and modified to fit a Psionic world. No Clerics, Wizards, Druids, etc. This goes for the players, too. In fact, I'm thinking on only allowing classes from Psionics Unleashed and Psionics Expanded.
This list would include:
Aegis
Cryptic
Dread
Marksman
Psion
Psychic Warrior
Soulknife
Tactician
Vitalist
Wilder
Plus all Prestige Classes.
All Core Races (Dwarf, Human, etc) plus all Psionic Races (Elan, Blue, etc) will be allowed, although I'll warn you right now, Blues will not have an easy time at first. I may allow Featured and Uncommon Races from the Advanced Race Guide on a case-by-case basis, although they do not have alternate favored class bonuses for the Psionic Classes, so will be limited to Skill Points or Hit Points in that regard.
Many magic items will be replaced with similar Psionic items, and those without a Psionic version will be simply turned into a Psionic version through houseruling. In addition, I'll be allowing Retraining, Drawbacks, and Downtime Rules from Ultimate Campaign, should they be needed.
What do you guys think? Questions, Comments? I can't honestly say when I'll have this ready, if there is interest, but I'd hope sometime this month, at the least.
Also, I would like to add, that this would only be my second time DMing a PbP campaign here on the Paizo Forums, though I've DM'd a few times in person with friends. For those interested in an example of my DMing style, see my Skull and Shackles Campaign Here. (Warning: Spoilers for that AP)

Dude I love psionics. I am all about this. Warning though, I'm new tp pbp. I hashed out character creation last night but may need help in the future.
I been playing 3.5 for years but I'm mostly stuck dm'ing. When I get the chance to play a player I always play a psion. Love them. Ill soon be switching my group to pathfinder as I've had the chance to play a few games now and think its a much better system. I was disapointed to hear that pf had no psionics, so when I stumbled upon the compatable psionics books I was relieved and excited. I'm ordering them tomarrow
Like I said, id love to play so just let me know what's going on and if we should submit a toon:)

I am a big fan of psionics as well. Been playing 3.5 for years with only a couple opportunities to delve into psionics as much as I have wanted to. I think this sounds great and so if you are going to do this, please keep me in mind!
Personally I was thinking of doing either an Aegis or a Vitalist, depending on what the party needs, if that helps at all.
Crustypeanut |
Are you allowing standard melee classes as well? Like barbarian?
I love psionics as well and would love to get a character up for this. :D
At first, I wasn't, but after some thought I probably will, if someone wants to take levels in them. The only thing I want to stay away from is Magic, as I don't wish to mix Magic and Psionics.
So yes, feel free to pick standard classes if you wish, as long as they have no spellcasting ability.
Bigger Club |
Very interested. It seems like a nice twist on things. I also love psionics system, so seems right up my alley.
A question though(others were asked by others), how would the setting change as the result of there not being any magic? Or is it mostly just psionics taking their place?
Would probably be applying with Aegis since I haven't had the chance to play one yet. Few other classes are possibilities too, bit early to say from the hip.

Character creation not entirely finalized, but pretty standard:
20 Point Build, Any Alignment within reason, 2 Traits or 3 Traits + Drawback, One Trait must be a Campaign Trait from the RotR Player's Guide, Average Starting Gold for your Class
With Traits, treat Knowledge(Arcana) as Knowledge(Psionics). Spellcraft and Use Magic Device work instead with Psionic Powers and Items, respectively.
A question though(others were asked by others), how would the setting change as the result of there not being any magic? Or is it mostly just psionics taking their place?
Still working on that, but basically its just taking their place. (Good) Clerics, Druids, and Oracles would likely be replaced by Vitalists. Evil Clerics would likely be replaced by Dreads, while Wizards/Sorcerers would be replaced by Psions/Wilders.
Without Clerics and other divine casters, the Gods have a more difficult time affecting the world - but devout worshipers are often 'rewarded' by having their latent psionic potential unlocked by their deity, with what class this is being different for each god. If a follower displeases their deity, instead of having their spells and class abilities revoked, they may have their psionic power diminished or suppressed, as if under a constant anti-psionics field or similar handicap. This won't affect the PCs, however, and is more of a story thing. We'll be using the same gods as normal Golarion. Feel free to worship a deity or not, it matters little beyond flavor.
Major instances of magic, such as the Runelords, Earthfall, etc, are unchanged (or modified, at least). Many monsters and Outsiders with natural magical talent (Spell-like Abilities for example) will instead have their abilities modified to fit the theme, and instead will be Psionic-Like Powers. (I think thats what they're called)

Since others are appearing interested in Aegis (or other melee classes), I am going to go Vitalist. I should have one submitted soon if that's cool.
The Aegis is one of the neater classes, thats for sure. Don't forget (This goes to all of you), that the Cryptic is the 'rogue' of the Psionic classes, even gaining Trapfinding! Its a pretty neat class. They're all neat classes.. and I'll make sure you guys face each and every one of them throughout the campaign >:)
jimibones83 |
my psionics book wont be here till next week. like I said befor, I def want to play, I just cant build a toon to submit until books arrive. vitalist was one I was interested in but I see someone else wants to do that. that's fine though cuz there are lots of classes I heard about that seemed interesting. and always, plain ol psion is my fav anyway so ill fall back on that if nothing else
Blinded By Science |
So how many players are you thinking for this game? I am just thinking that a tactician (battle medic) and a vitalist might be overkill unless we have a really large group, as that is the equivalent of two clerics. (Or at least a cleric and bard with healing spells)
Really looking forward to this though, so if I need to go into another class to stay in the game, I am willing to do practically anything. Another class I am really interested in is Marksmen(Kaigun), so tell me if you feel that would be a better character for me to build.

Aiming for 4-5 players. I'll have an actual recruitment post up by tomorrow, as this was mainly for interest checks. Theres definitely enough interest! :D
All of the Psionic Classes are fine for this campaign - I'll be picking people partially based on who can be creative enough to tie their class into the history of Golarion, knowing what they know about Golarion and the descriptions of the Psionic classes.
As for races that give spell-like abilities, they are allowed if you can get rid of the spell-like ability through alternate racial choices. Same goes for classes, if you can get rid of their spells. (Trapper Ranger, for example, is allowed). Racial/Class abilities that give a bonus against spells or spell-like abilities, such as the Dwarven Hardy Racial Trait, work fine against Psionics.
Crustypeanut |
Dotting, thinking about tactician, with the battle medic archetype
Out of curiosity, would you be giving out PFS chronicle sheets? All you'd have to do is sign them, since it's a home game you wouldn't be required to adhere to PFS rules.
I don't plan on doing anything with PFS, I'm sorry :(

I'm still working on it, just hit a snag with how I want Psionics to replace Magic.
Namely: 7 Schools of Magic (Not including Diviniation) for 7 Sins. There aren't 7 Psion Disciplines to replace it, unless I use the Generalist Discipline.. and one of the disciplines is the Psionic version of Diviniation, which didn't have an associated Sin.
Loup Blanc |
Well, I'd like to voice that I'm still interested. I'm playing around with creating a combined Gifted Blade/Deadly Fist Soulknife, but I don't know if I could play one without having the character yell "HADOUKEN" every time they use the ranged option and "SHORYUKEN" every time they make their fists flaming.
jimibones83 |
@ Loup Blanc I saw some boner pills at the gas station with a very graphic image of ryu givin it to chung lee on the front. I had to have the box but i figured since i bought em id try em. Instructions were in korean or something so I just took some. The look on my ol ladies face at the end when I yelled SHOYRUKEN said she had never played street fighter lol. True story
Crustypeanut |
Not dead in the water Jimi, just still working on the campaign! This was more of an interest check, and I know I said I was going to get he recruitment up earlier, but as I also said I hit a snag :P
But I think I'm worrying too much about how psionics would replace magic.. so I might just say to hell with figuring that out. Psionics could not replace magic in the way that would keep this campaign anywhere near the same, so I'll just replace the magic users with psionic users, give them some powers that replicate certain schools' magic, and call it a day.

Hmmmm.... A Halfling Marksman, focused in the Halfling Sling Staff, might be fun. That's what I'm looking at, right now. A question, though, simply because it's hard to use sling-staves. Does a Halfling Sling Staff count as a sling for the purposes of the Alternate Racial Trait "Warslinger"? It could be argued either way, so I'm curious as to your verdict.
Relevant text:
Halflings are experts at the use of the sling. Halflings with this racial trait can reload a sling as a free action. Reloading a sling still requires two hands and provokes attacks of opportunity. This racial trait replaces sure-footed.
Dark Netwerk |
I can see how the seven sin magic paths don't fall very easily into the psionic disciplines. My only thought on this would be to have the sin practitiouners focus on a particular descriptor (like, Fear=Necromancy=Gluttony) but that's quite labor intensive. You could also try (maybe just for ones that don't have an associated discipline) and fit the theme of the sin alongside a particular class (I don't know the Psi classes that well but maybe Aegis=Abjurer=Envy, Dread=Necromancer=Gluttony, etc.)
Interesting concept nonetheless.
Anderlorn |
I am noticing a lot of marksmen being created, and here I was thinking of making a two-handed throwing sniper :(
Ill have to see what else I can create.
well i guess that there are only 10 psionic classes so I guess that there would be some overlap :P
At first, people were on the fence regarding the marksman. I've been sure all along ... LOL
I am going to be a Marksman Shroud in the Hvy Repeating Crossbow. We should try to be well rounded. This is what I think we should have:
1. Marksman
2. Soulknife - Armored (Can materialize armor too), maybe also a Soulbolt archetype(s)
3. Vitalist - since they take a lot of focus, I think someone needs to play it and not the GM as an NPC.
4. Psion - Telekinesis or dual-discipline
5. Cryptic
Gornak |
I'm posting for interest. Not in a psionic Rise of the Runelords game (since I'm already in one), but in Street Fighter (tm) brand gas station boner pills.
Edgar Lamoureux |
Well, anderlorn, that's a great pidgeonholing of a party, well done.
In my experience, the "roles" of a party don't need to be filled, per se. For instance, in a 3.5 eberron game I'm in, the 3 characters are 2 fighters and a dusk blade, and we've gotten past everything so far, with little to no DM changing of what is already written. All that saying "We need this, this, and this" has done, at least in my experience, is make people play characters that they otherwise don't want to play. YMMV, of course, but I hardly see the "necessity" in any of the given roles. While nice, they can be forgotten with a bit of planning and thought.
Edit: I sincerely didn't mean this to be as snarky as it came off. Terrible headache, boring class, etc etc has worn me down today. I apologize for being rude, though I stand by my points.
Gobo Horde |
I am building a half-giant marksman sniper right now who throws really, really big weapons. Not the most optimal but should still be decent.
I agree with edgar. It isn't really your place to say who plays what, especially to go as far as selecting what archetypes we should use. Having said that I will give you the shadow of doubt that it was ment as your opinion only.
I am currently playing in a game with 2 tanks and 2 dpsers, no arcane or divine casting in sight :) thankfully we at least have someone who can UMD. Even still, if we had zero healing ability, the game takes a slower pace, resting for days instead of hours but the game isn't effectivly dead.
Edit: Nice pic there Loup Blanc ;) looks sexy *_-
Crustypeanut |
Anderlorn was just giving his personal opinion on the matter - his ideal group is certainly balanced, but by no means required.
The amazing thing about Pathfinder is that you can build classes for roles some people wouldn't normally think of them for. You can make a Psion be a front line tank, or perhaps a Vitalist who's more offensive in nature. Plus, Anderlorn forgot an Aegis. Tis a very versatile class. :P

DM Crusty, any verdict on this?
