I don't see what that has to do with anything I've been saying.

I'm not talking about just rolling a die and waiting for the GM to talk.

Your personal preferences are not being judged.

Ditto!

Hack & slash aka beer & pretzels is a style of play.

I have always seen "Hack & Slash" and "Beer & Pretzels" as being 2 different play styles, with "Hack & Slash" focusing on combat and "Beer & Pretzels" being a more relaxed, casual play style that doesn't focus on the details. Of course, they aren't mutually exclusive (few play styles actually are), so you could do one or the other or both at the same time. Regardless, they are still valid choices.

Let's go kill some juicy bags of xp is hack and slash, breezing through in game social encounters (as described version 1) is what I refer to as beer and pretzels, no your paladin will not fall for killing evil, the roleplay is relaxed. This is not the full experience of a RPG, but it is a fine way to spend an evening with friends (eating and drinking)....between serious campaigns....

I've lost more characters in 'beer and pretzels' mode than 'hack and slash'. Whether it was because beer (or other adult beverage) was consumed or just simply the lethality level was much higher despite the party being 'relaxed', I couldn't tell you.

Character deaths, Hack 'n' Slash: 1 (retconned when GM realized error in math.)

Character deaths, Beer 'n' Pretzels: 5 (no retcons, plenty of accusing glares.)

How else do you think my 5 Charisma Dwarf Barbarian has succeeded TWICE in DC 20+ Diplomacy checks?

Alchohol

Still reading the 90+ posts since I last checked this thread, buuuut...

When my PFS lodge ran a certain scenario we did something novel, which ended up helping us greatly. None of us were really that charismatic... except the paladin played by someone who often rolls 5 or less. We told the truth to the person we were expected to lie to. Turned out this was the best option.
