Looking to have a ship built, is there any speciifc one?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

A friend offered to build a ship for me for the AP, I see someone built the Man's promise.

To avoid any extra spoilers since I'm not sure who's going to run the game in my group, is this a boat the PC's will end up keeping?

Or is there another boat that has a map drawn for it that would be better?

I know spoilers can't be totally avoided on this one but minimal is best, thanks!

Yep that's the one

Mans Promise is fine. So is Wormwood, actually. The PC's might change ship later (at least my group is considering it), but they'll most likely keep on using a sailing ship.

But Mans's Promise is a good bet, at least for the second part of the AP.

Is there anyone making/selling these ships or ships that would work?

Man's Promise is the one to focus on first, the wormwood is a good second.

There are some ships on the market, but they all require work: assembly and/or painting. You can also build your own or convert existing ships. Mega bloks did some impressive pirate ships in the past, which convert quite well to 28mm standards. I did some myself and I also made some homebrew terrain pieces to construct the inside of a ship, combining them with Psomminiature pieces (Psom is similar to Dwarven Forge and they have a barn set). You can find some pictures in my Deviantart gallery.

Ship one of my players built

One of my players built this. He did the Man's Promise too. Basically printed the map and pasted it on cardboard. He used wooden dowels for elevation.

Shadow Lodge

I built this one for my S&S campaign:
The Maiden
It took a while (~10 hours) and requires some skill with a razor knife and super glue.
Definitely worth the effort.

I considered doing this as well (prior to my industrious player). My thought was the Maiden was larger than the Wormwood and/or the Man's Promise. Is that correct @Tomos?

I made models for both ships including detailed below deck plans of both. We really made a lot of use of the Wormwood, particularly below decks. When they transitioned to the Man's Promise, we use the top deck of the Wormwood as the various ships that they board.

I found that the basic model of The Maiden is almost exactly the right size for the Wormwood and/or Man's Promise. It looks awesome when it's finished and everyone loves it.

The great thing about Worldworksgames cardstock models is that you can alter it ("kitbashing") however you want without much trouble.
If you want it to have only two masts, you can do that. If you want it to be longer, or have more masts, or more decks, or taller masts, you can do all that too.
All you have to do is print out more pieces and cut them to the right sizes, then glue in place.

It takes a little practice. Having a very sharp razor knife is key.
I used a lot of Zap-A-Gap glue. Cures fast and has a strong bond.

I wanted to build a second one to represent enemy ships/victims, but I decided to take a different and easier route. I had some 2" thick pink insulating foam board lying around and I had previously printed out one of the Pathfinder ship flip mats on cardstock.
I cut the foam board to shape, glued two ship-shaped pieces together (using insulating foam adhesive from the hardware store, not regular glue!) and glued the flat cardstock ship printout to the top.
Some cheap brown paint on the sides and it's a passable mockup of a 'target' ship that's about the same height as the main deck of The Maiden.

If you need more advice on how to do this, even with little experience, fire away and I'll talk you through it.

Great site for cheap crafting

I learned a lot from these guys. A number of them have attempted ships.
