Lantern Lodge and Shadow Lodge Finales [Delver's Diary]

Grand Lodge

In case people are confused about how the retirement of Lantern Lodge and Shadow Lodge will affect your PCs of those factions, I've tried to summarize what we currently know in today's post on my PFS blog Delver's Diary.

I hasten to add that this is only my understanding. Although I have tried my best to be accurate and cite my sources, it's possible that this understanding may change as we get more information from the developers (in which case I will add comments to the blog post, so you may wish to follow the blog or the post itself for updates). My goal with this post was to put all this information together in one place since there are lots of questions that players and GMs are asking about how this will work.

Hope it's helpful!

So what works...

Starting a character now and racing to level 3 (this is what the home group is doing). Modules are a great way of doing this, since they level you faster in terms of hours played/level than scenarios. (Murders mark is especially short)

DMing the scenario and applying it to a level 3 or higher.

What may not work

Playing a character in the Lantern Lodge through way of the kirin, using your free faction switch from that mission to go shadow lodge, and then using that free faction switch From Rivalries end to wind up somewhere else. I suspect at the least there will be a clause saying you can only get the Lantern lodge OR shadow lodge boon.

DMing the scenario and applying it wherever you want. As I read Mikes post, your character doesn't have to get to level 3 before the deadline on august 14th, you just need to DM it before then, but its a little vague whether a chronicle is actually "applied": when you run the scenario and say "I choose you!" or when the character becomes legal to get the credit.

What doesn't work

-Playing a pregen (because they're Grand Lodge)

Assumed to be Grand Lodge. And that should only apply, if at all, for when a pregen is being used for a new PC number. When a pregen is being used for PC X of Faction Y, that pregen should be doing Faction Y's mission, not the Grand Lodge mission.

After all, when you give the GM the PC number, and they enter the table information, it will show that PC's faction, not Grand Lodge (unless that IS that PC's faction, of course).

Shadow Lodge

Someone (I think Mike) said that the bonuses from the boons of Way of the Kirin and Rivalry's End don't stack, meaning they're likely to be the same boon.

I think you'd still be able to go from Lantern Lodge to Shadow Lodge to some other faction, but the boon from Rivalry's End wouldn't apply.

It sure seems like people will have very little time to get in those scenarios before Aug. 14th. I'm sure a lot of people would like to play those adventures with their appropriate characters and just won't have the chance before they are forced to switch factions. Why make it such a rush?

Liberty's Edge

Very Little time? Its June the 6th today. August 14th is still 2 months away. I don't think that's a huge amount of time, but its definitely not in 'rush' category either.

Rivalry's End doesn't come out for another month, though. So that's only 6 weeks to play it. My local venue meets the 4th Saturday of the month -- so exactly one opportunity, if that's even what they're running. I've been able to scout out a few other locations within a 45-minute drive that meet twice a month, so say another 4 or 5 opportunities -- if that's what they're running. I'm fairly confident I'll have a chance to play this with my Shadow Lodge character in time, but it's far from a sure thing. Especially since I only know of one other Shadow Lodge character in all of those groups.

This is a very tight timeline for such a major change -- I would really have appreciated another month or two.

You could always try playing in a PbP game (online).

I am sure many people will be offering/playing that.

How fast does a play by post run? The chronicle has to be applied before August 14th, and I don't think PbPs get a pass on that.

Grand Lodge

PbP is slow, but with a motivated group of players, you might get through it in time. I'd say the average scenario takes two months, but it varies on how swiftly the GM keeps things moving along. I've taken a shine to RPGGeek's Pathfinder Society Game Guild for PbP.

Problem is, while your character is in that game for two months give or take, it can't be used in any other live or real-time scenarios.

A better approach might be to find a game using VTT. There is a lot of activity over at the Pathfinder Society Online Collective, most of it using Roll20.net, which is pretty user friendly.

Indeed, I ran Way of the Kirin for them this week.
