This needs to be a return to the black and white Gothic horror of the beginning.
Favorite is Rupert of the Red death.
About the only thing you've got right about the beginning stories is that they were shot in black and white.
Other than that though I'd hardly call the beginning episodes a "Gothic Horror" series. At first it was somewhat educational, although that got run off the rails very quickly. But mostly action adventure where the main form of action was a lot of running.

Yeah, if any Doctor's run could be labeled with the "Gothic Horror" label, it's the 4th Doctor's. Which was 100% in color.

I disagree. Black and white episodes of tomb of the cybermen (second dr)and lots of 1s were scary Many of tenants stories had horror elements. Problem in my opinion is pacing and cliffhangers. For the most part Dr who has gotten away from cliffhangers and im not sure why. Now most episodes feel like the DR took a shot of expresso and put on some track shoes and if you turn your head you miss the plot.He waves the sonic screwdriver around along with the blank mind control id .
Old classic Dr who had the monster with its hands around the neck of the DR or something bad was about to happen. This idea didnt change just the writing did. Cable has great dramas such as Game of thrones, Walking Dead, The Killing etc where the hero/heroine is in deadly peril and it goes to credits. Dr who used do this with the best of them and wouldnt it allow more creative stories. Same goes with minor actor deaths. There seem to be a lot less "red shirt" deaths. Water of Mars in my opinion is one of the better new Dr who stories because of that element Couldnt it be easier to sell these stories as box set DVDS?

The romance element of gothic horro has only been introduced in the last 3 dr's. I dont remember and "on screen romance" between the dr and his companions other than hints with the second Romana.
Other than that Dr who as always had elements of horro and gothic horror. With creepy crypts, monsters, mood music, women in distress, conflicted heroes
1965 The rescue.
1971 the Daemons

Daniel Kaluuya would be a fantastic choice.

They should let a woman take the role for a spin.
You know they could go with Catherine Tate and run with the fact that as Donna that event that the Master used to duplicate himself world wide actually cured her of the condition that would result in her dying if she remembers but this isn't discovered until River Song or perhaps Captain Jack discovers there's another Gallifreyan or Timelord on earth and are shocked to discover its Donna.

I agree Helen would be a better choice than Catherine, though Tate was one of my favorite companions. My wife has already vowed to boycott Dr. Who if Matt regenerates into a woman. I guess I would have to sneak around and catch them On Demand.
I would be curious if they actually signed John Hurt as the next DR. You may need someone of his or Helen's stature to replace Matt.

Tennant was actually my least favorite of the latest three, personally. Though a lot of that is probably tainted by my dislike of Rose.
I'd be 100% behind Tate returning to the show in some manner though. Donna's ending was a ripoff.
I have the exact opposite reaction to these character's. Donna was at times as annoying as finger nails on a chalk board. I actually thought Rose was great and was SO sad to see her go. I was very happy when they brought her back however briefly. So in my case I am very happy with Donna's ending since it would seem to bar her from ever returning.
Also I am finding I like Tennant and Smith the same. So... I find it odd when people elevate one and tear down the other.

Rose's coming back is what made me dislike her. She was good up through when she left the first time. Tennant angsting over her ruined much of Martha's time with him and that's what started her getting annoying to me. Her returns and Davies' obvious obsession with the character sealed my dislike.
I liked Donna for two reasons - one because Tennant finally stopped angsting so much when she joined, and two because of the same reason I liked Rory: she was willing to call the Doctor on his BS from time to time.

CHAPTER ONE – WANT SOME CANDY?
LONDON 1895 + 5 DAYS LOCAL TIME SINCE LAST VISIT
The TARDIS materialized in the narrow alley off Baker Street. "Here we are." The Doctor's new assistant stared at him with surprise.
"I thought we were going to some alien world to watch the setting of five suns...or something."
The Doctor shook his head. "Jelly Babies!" The red haired girl stared at him. "Jelly Babies?"
Doctor nodded with an insane smile. "Jelly Babies...I found the most amazing shop during a visit to Baker Street in eighteen ninety five."
"We are...Jelly Babies!" She was almost ashamed to be on what was apparently now a trip to the shops. The Doctor looked back at her from the exit.
“The Shops...?” Karen wondered to herself if he frequents Pompeii just for the pickled eggs.
"Not just any Shop...A wonderful little confectioner who makes Jelly babies from Turkish delight and in assorted flavours and colours." The Doctor stepped from the Door of the TARDIS into the city of London.
“What year is it?” Karen was just realizing that her silver radiation suit would be a little inappropriate.
“Eighteen ninety five plus five days local time since my last visit.” The Doctor took a moment to breathe in the Sunlight.
“So...you’re a regular customer?”

It's what fans do... they show their love for one thing by tearing down anything else they see as competition.
