Mount choice?

Advice

So, I want to make a mounted archer, particularly on a flying mount, but I'm open to land-based. My original choice was a Weapon Master fighter with a monster cohort. I'm looking for effectiveness though and read that animal companions are better.
So, would Ranger be a better choice? And if so, which mounts would be the best choice. Also, is there some way I can get my mount and my character to both full attack via pounce or something?

The problem you face is RAW, most classes that get "mounts" end up with a very restricted list.

Druids get an unfettered list, which allows Pteradon and Roc as 1st level choices.

Animal Domain clerics and Wild-Blooded Sylvan Sorcerers get access to the full list at lvl -4 (which makes the Boon Companion feat necessary).

The Samurai is a natural mounted archer, but the mount class feature restricts them to horses. Ditto with the "luring cavalier"

A cleric of Erastil (favored weapon longbow) with the animal domain could be an interesting approach, but for real archery you are going to be horribly feat-starved.

Maybe build towards the "Nature Warden" prestige class... 3 levels of Druid (for the divine casting and the animal companion) 3 levels of ranger (for the style feat weapon profs and favored terrain), Boon companion feat to keep mount leveling up, and into prestige class.

Alternately... read the "Beast Rider" Cavalier archetype and beg your GM to allow flying mounts on the 4th level list.

Archer or Crossbowman Fighter archtypes are probably better for ranged than the Weapon Master fighter.
Ranger will be a solid choice, but not as big a damage dealer I would think.
If you want a flying mount, go half-orc and get Beast Rider as a feat at level 7 or so. Lets you get a flying dino as your mount (Pterodon or something).
I think, but I'm not certain, if you want major damage, you go with a large bastard sword or dwarven waraxe, put Impact on it, get the vital strike feat chain, then the flyby attack feat.

I'm currently looking at Allosaurus and Cat, Big. They both get pounce, so they could charge and get full attack while I full attack from there back, yes? I could dip a level of Mammoth Rider to make them do more damage.

Their pounce does not give you pounce. You would need to have your own ability (from a class/ability/spell/feat/whatever) which allowed for you to make a full attack from a mount after it has charged.

I thought mount and PC got their own actions? Would pounce not just consume the mount's turn?

If your mount moves more than 5 feet, you can only make a single melee attack. Essentially, you have to wait until the mount gets to your enemy before attacking, so you can't make a full attack.

The original poster is making a mounted archer, so he could full attack at the mid-point of his mount's movement.

If you want to start out as a medium sized archer with a flying mount, a Ranger with the Hippogriff Rider archetype is the best option I know.
