Pick my character for our group's new game!

Advice

I've got too much time on my hands and too many character ideas. Our group is going to be abandoning our Rise of the Runelords (3.5) game sometime in the next couple weeks and starting a new AP using the Pathfinder rules (All Paizo books are valid)

So far I've got twelve first level characters ready to be played. And ideas for another dozen or so others.

Should I play:

Alkenstar Thrune, whip wielding (and pistol-waving, once he gets a gunslinger dip at level 2) Archaeologist who's looking for ancient artifacts to sell to the highest bidder?

Amerivon Coldbow, the stealthy sneak-attacking (eventually) archer from above the arctic circle? (Myrmidarch / Sniper / Arcane Trickster)

Dakor, the gangbanger with the ice cold rage? (Oracle / Urban Barbarian / Rage Prophet)

Mai Pham, the man who's yet to meet a problem that couldn't be solved by setting it on fire (or dousing it in acid / freezing it in ice / tazing it for resisting)?

Merida, who's basically Cub (From Lone Wolf & Cub) all grown up? (Sword Saint Samurai / Aldori Fighter / Aldori Swordlord)

Morgaar Narhain, the dwarf who knows that it's always Hammer Time? (Foehammer / Stalwart Defender w/ the boulder helmet feats)

Rulaan, rebellious half-elf whose just figuring out that the pirates' life actually... kinda sucks. (Straightforward mobile fighter)

Rurik, Varangian mercenary for hire to the highest bidder? (Guide-Skirmisher 7 / Sniper 3 / Horizon Walker 10)

Saharken, the would-be wizard who's too busy figuring out how best to smack people with a stick to concern himself with all the magic that doesn't make hitting people with a stick work better? (Straight up Staff Magus that'll be getting a fox familiar ASAP to agree that hitting people with a stick is almost always the best method of conflict resolution.)

Tandi Kardrin, disillusioned child of two worlds who fits in neither? (She was actually going to be a male character, but finding fantasy art of non-Caucasians is nigh impossible. The only reason she even starts with a bow is that the picture I used was the only one I managed to sorta alter the skin tone of well enough to suit.) (Two handed fighter / Thug Scout)

Zachariah, the Magus who will stick his sword into something just to see what happens, and then do it a second time to make sure? (Admixturer 1 / Magus 19 - this one has to survive until level six to actually work properly when he can spontaneously cast shocking grasp with any energy type he likes)

Zahe, the bad-luck soldier who just doesn't fit in? (Zen Archer)

(Also, if anyone can point me at decent art for Alkenstar or Rulaan, or better art for Tandi, please let me know.)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

When in doubt, always choose dwarf.

Well there was talk of an all dwarf party at one point.

Rulaan sounds interesting from an RP perspective

I'm not sure that he's not too much the stereotypical BSF character though - impulsive young kid who ran away from home to be an adventurer.

What's the rest of the group playing? Find something that the team is deficient in, then play a character that shores up that weakness.

I think there's going to be an alchemist of some sort. Beyond that, I have no idea. I'll most likely print out all the ones that I'm still interested in and choose when we're actually ready to play.

I've added a thirteenth option: Digmaar, the disgraced dwarf who was disowned and banished for not being suspicious enough of non-dwarfs. He's learned his lesson since then - anyone who tries to get past him is likely to wind up on the ground and curbstomped.

I think you should play Cherish, the hot tempered Seductress who is an Arcane Duelist/Dragon Disciple. Give her a long spear which she sticks in the ground and proceeds to use for dirty dancing when she performs inspirational and heroic tunes. Also she needs to be an aasimar for favored class bonuses so you can afford to dive into DD :).

.

And, see this is why we really can't answer your question. D&D is a team game. In order to pick which PC you should play, we need to know what the team needs.

Now if you just want to know which sounds cool, sure. But I notice you basically have three types going here- blasters, strikers and tanks. No healer/buffer? No battlefield control? No utility casters?

Note that for Tandi Kardrin, straight scout rogue might work best. Just get a bit Two-handed weapon from race or trait or rogue skill.

But the idea of playing an adventurer who is sick of being an adventurer is fun.

Add my vote for Rurik. I like him and you can use the horizon walker levels to gain some nice bonuses in your favored terrains.

BTW, where is Admixturer from?

It's all about Rurrik!

Advanced Players Guide. Gives the ability to change the element of any evocation that does elemental damage to the element of your choice at the time of casting Int mod + 3 times per day.

I think I've burned out on buffers, or maybe just on prepared full casters in general. I've been playing buffer clerics and wizards for the past year. And now that you point out that I've got a fairly narrow selection of play styles here, I think I realize why I haven't been pushing too hard to finish up most of the other ideas I had marked down.

Any idea what the new adventure will be? I've always found the best way to narrow down character concepts is to think about which ones would be the most fun in a given adventure.

Does that work on Magus spells too or just on his wizzo spells?

No idea what we'll be playing which is part of the reason that I tried to minimize the characters attachment to any particular place.

There's nothing in the language of the admixture ability to indicate that it would only work for Wizard spells. If the character survives long enough, he'll be able to spontaneously cast shocking grasp with any energy type and whatever metamagic feats are best for the situation without increasing the casting time. Of course that versatility costs almost all of his feats. He has to start with heighten which will never be used so he can get preferred spell at level 5, which then allows for spontaneous metafocus at 6th. He also is going to want Intensify, Empower, Quicken, and eventually Spell Perfection, plus Spell Penetration and maybe Greater as well. Doesn't leave much for everything else.

Tandi's full level plan is two-handed fighter 5/thug scout 15; she's starting in fighter mainly because it makes more sense given her background.

You could offset the feat tax by getting (or crafting for 1 feat tax)some metamagic rods to do some of the heavy lifting, freeing up some feats for more metamagic or for something else....

I agree with Durngrun- when in doubt play a dwarf. Does it have to be one of the dozen archtypes you mentioned?

Could it be Amberjack Hammertoe Raging Champion of Strength & Ferocity who believes if Gorum wanted you to be healed you would have been born with fast healing(Buff Only Cleric/Barbarian with alternate domain and channeling rules)
