Hello good people of Pax, I'm applying to your gaming group as well. Here's to hoping I can share in some good gaming memories with all you lovely people!
I've been flirting with the idea of applying to Pax for a while now; all the Paxians I have talked with both on these boards and elsewhere have always met me with sincerity, respect, and openness. They're an organization which has demonstrated to me simultaneous pragmatism and good will toward the community as a whole. It is for these reasons that I am applying.
Sorry I didn't make as long or elegant an introduction as Hobs. Sucks to apply in the wake of something of that magnitude. ;)

Hey, it's cool, I applied in the wake of Deianira, about 10 days after, and she's tough competition too. Luckily, they haven't made applicants fight each other to the death, at least as far as I've seen...
As I mentioned with Hobs, please remind me to move your name on the 'roll call' list when you complete the joining process.
Soon I'll have to go poke your app thread with a stick!

Whether we can collaborate on these or other initiatives, I'm hopeful that many of the original forum groups, likely the first EEers, will set the tone for community cooperation, regardless of how wild things become at OE.Booo! Hobs! You traitorous hypocrite. Just kidding. :P
Hope you have fun with Pax and are able to better promote the 'good' aspects of Pax.
From T7V with luv... :P
Awww shucks. Missing you too, bud, but needs must at work. Hopefully it'll all calm down now so I can get back on the boards and annoy people like I used to.
On a less personal note, congratulations on your decision. Pax has gained a great envoy, and I think you have gained a safe and happy haven for your RP exploits. I hope your "non-neutrality" will in no way effect a change in how these events will be run or affect anything else (pretty sure it won't :) ).

Welcome to the madhouse, Shane. :)

This in no way means I intend to transform these initiatives into Pax only or Pax controlled or Pax bias initiatives. Truth be told, many Pax members had already planned to take part in these before I decided to join Pax, and many of these players have participated in similar programs within other games long before they met me. Will I be creating RP activities in Pax - most definitely. Does that mean I will somehow begin to exclude non-Pax members - absolutely not.
I feel all Nihimonish (that's meant as a compliment Nihimon...I'm proud of myself for finally figuring out the quoting code *waves*)
So no, my friend, I absolutely have no intention of my initiatives excluding anyone, and several Pax officers have said the same without being prompted to do so. Again, Pax is far more community minded than people may think, and its leadership is very interested in making this game better as part of that community. Now, does that mean they aren't going to play to "win" or be "successful" - of course not - it's a settlement competition game, but they also very much understand that an enjoyable, competitive game only thrives if there is a vibrant community. After all, if any one group totally dominates a competitive game, there really is no more game to play.

OMG Pax has consumed Hobs.
Psst... it is the other way around, Pax just doesn't know it. Remember, put a frog in a pot of water, and slowly raise the temperature, you cook the frog. Throw a frog in boiling water, he jumps out.
I have sources that tell me this plan has been in the works since 1973.

I can tell you from first hand conversations that Pax members - including their highest leadership - have nothing but praise for many members in TEO and T7V. Unfortunately, I do not think many of the members of those two guilds have had much firsthand experience with Pax, aside from this forum, to form a similar judgment.
I missed this bit earlier, and although it's nearly two pages back, I still want to comment. I wouldn't like to speak for TEO members - and I'm not really putting forward a T7V position here, just my personal feeling. While it may be true that some of us in T7V have not had the same amount of interaction with Pax that you had before joining, it doesn't mean that we (or I at least) don't hold them in equally high regard. I have swapped PMs with a few, including Pagan and Charlie George, and have of course read their (innumerable) posts. It's enough for me to understand why you made the choice that you have. I don't have to be a member or active on TeamSpeak to appreciate (and support) what they have done and are doing for the PFO community.
Once again, congratulations on your move, Hobs, and congratulations Pax in getting one of the best new members you could hope for. Enmity between certain individuals may exist, but that should not colour the relationship between others, just because of a membership label (and especially more than a year before we've even had the chance to kill each other in game!). And be sure that whatever praise there might be, it goes both ways.
(Group hug, everybody?)

Lhan,
You have always been one to find your own truth and speak your own mind. It is one of the reasons I so highly value your thoughts when I have the pleasure of hearing or reading them. That, and you're not trying to stick my face in any awkward photoshop projects. ;)
Have a very pleasant and restful holiday.

OH LOOK! Shane Gifford has joined Pax! Let's ask him questions.
Shane...
Knowing that you were planning on playing a merchant, what's your thoughts on how you'd like to see caravans work?
- Should caravans need to be PvP flagged to gain caravan status and possible caravan buffs (e.g. travel speed)
- How much information about the caravan should hide outs give
- Should caravans only be allowed to travel on roads to gain caravan buffs
- Should pack animals be stealable
If the Pax powers that be think these questions would be better suited on another thread, I can move them, but I thought it might be nice to see newly welcomed members share their thoughts on topics that they have great interest in.
Shane Gifford Goblin Squad Member |
Nicely done Hobs. I'd be glad to answer your questions. :)
I'd prefer that caravans were a separate mechanic which flags you for PvP for people not from your settlement, at least removing reputation hits. That way there's more choice for the merchant: you can avoid the caravan system, moving less product at one time but doing so in a generally safer way (only losing part of your cargo to a SAD if caught by a superior force, as opposed to losing the whole cargo because of the PvP flag). Or you can flag up as a caravan, moving more product and possibly getting some other benefit but making you open game for whomever wants to ambush you.
The information that a hideout can give would be very dependant on how difficult hideouts are to find. If they're impossible to find unless you're right on top of them with no way of tracking them down, then they should give at the most only an indication that a caravan is within some distance. If they are easier to track down, you could include many other bits of information, including direction relative to the hideout, approximate number travelling with the caravan, approximate quantity and/or value of cargo... many things that could be revealed.
In the spirit of meaningful decisions and options, I would rather that caravans be allowed to off-road but gain very large benefits for being on-road, possibly including move speed, extra NPC guards, or maybe something else.
I think it would be really cool if pack animals were stealable. I would hope that they're only stolen on death and can be threaded, just like other items. It would be an item which screams "I am a valuable target", but would allow you to gain significant benefits due to greatly increased carry capacity. The bandits would have a meaningful choice once they claim an animal: they can use it to carry their new loot to town and risk becoming targets of another group, or they can leave it to make themselves less conspicuous.

Or we could BBQ the pack animals.... It's hard to do all that raiding on an empty stomach.
Good answers Shane. Yeah, no details on Hideouts other than vaguely saying that are hard to find and give some sort if info. Not sure if get hideout is what pulls a traveler out of fast travel or some other mechanic.

I'd forgotten all about fast travel... that could change a lot if it becomes an important part of the game. I think the best way to do fast travel and keep a location-based market would be to prevent people from taking any items with them when they fast travel. That would mean that, if you use fast travel a lot, you'd have to leave equipment in a lot of local banks (which means running it there) or have an organization with a wide reach providing your gear when you fast travel. Admittedly, this system could be seen as a burden, but if the choice is between no fast travel or this fast travel... (unless of course someone else can come up with a better way to fast travel without instantly globalizing the markets)

Honestly, I hope they never do fast travel.
I tend to agree. My experience is that it makes large vibrant worlds feel small and boring. Look what it did to games like Skyrim; The game is completely different if you refuse to use the fast travel, it feels much more like a living world.

I liked doing that in Skyrim; I used the carriage guys to head in between settlements, but otherwise didn't use fast travel (not every playthrough of skyrim, though). I would definitely agree that it makes the world feel much more alive and really adds to roleplaying (in the "being a part of the world" aspect).
I do hope that fast travel, if it is in, is done very carefully.

That song made me SAD, but it is good to be reminded that there is a lot of misery and destruction related to these "quant" stories.
