[Fire Mountain Games] The Last Day of our Throne of Night Kickstarter

Product Discussion

The last day of our Throne of Night Kickstarter has arrived! Pledge now or forever pay full retail!

Fire Mountain Games, the critically acclaimed publisher of "Way of the Wicked" is raising money to publish their second adventure path and you can be a part of it!

If we can make it less than another $2200, then everyone will receive an exclusive 32-page adventure written by myself available nowhere else.

Pledge now and make it a reality as well as getting a substantial discount on the books themselves.

Together we will build this Throne of Night.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I told myself I wouldn't do it. I told myself no more kickstarters for 3 months. I said I wouldn't do it, since my budget these days is next to non-existent and my bank-account weeps tears of blood every time is use an ATM-machine...
..
.

I caved in harder than a cave subjected to the tender caresses of a kobold demolition-team.

Pledged for print.

EDIT: On another note: I really hope you'll get an editor for ToN - the one thing not 100% glorious with WotW were the few glitches and typos that snuck in here and there.

I went ahead and revised my pledge from Explorer to Deluxe Explorer. I was planning on springing for the map and WotW 7 anyway so I might as well throw in for the extra adventure if we can get to 40K, besides getting the map for free at the deluxe level means a total pledge of $170.00 will get WotW 7, The Signed Print/PDF ToN, The beautiful Map, AND the extra adventure (should we hit the 40K mark). A real deal for only a $15 larger pledge.

Thanks, Gary and Best of Luck to You, Mike and Fire Mountain Games.

Gary,

When you say "everyone will receive", does that include those at the explorer level or only the super explorer? Also is this a pdf or printed item? I'm already a backer, but wasn't sure about this stretch goal. Thanks

"Throne of Night: Palace of the Half-God" will be free to everyone who supports us at DELUXE EXPLORER and above and available as a $10 add-on once we hit the $40,000 level. More details will follow. It will be exclusive to this kickstarter and will be a full color book featuring the writing of Gary McBride and the art of Michael Clarke.

Thanks again for your support!

This is the portion of the Kickstarter page that I believe is relevant to your question, Douglasiv.

Upgraded my pledge to "overlord".
Thinking it would be cool to have Mr. Clarke make a custom piece of art of the PCs I run through the Throne of Night.

Banesfinger,

Wow! Thanks a lot for your support. It is greatly appreciated!

Douglasiv,

Everyone at the DIGITAL DELVER level and above will receive the PDF of the adventure for free. DELUXE EXPLORERS get the print version, the poster and the signed versions of the books as well for no additional money.

Endzeitgeist,
We hear you and will definitely be increasing the time and money spent on editing thanks in large part to this kickstarter.

Fingers crossed we hit the $40k mark. I've already pledged at Overlord otherwise I would revise it up.

John,

We're less than eight hundred away with five hours to go!

We can definitely do this.

I SO wish I could. I'm strapped right now...you do great work, Gary...and I'll probably pick it up later...but best of luck with that stretch!

Dave,

No problem. I completely understand! Thanks for checking in!

$387.00 to go with 76 minutes left. Wow! This going to be close!

And $40,640.... woo

Congrats on the funding, Gary! Can't wait to see the product.

Congratulations on getting the needed funding.

Thanks everyone! Thanks for your support. We actually spent today laying out Book One. I'll think you'll be pleased.

Will it still be possible to get the add-ins? Will there be a survey sent out?

I wanted the exclusive module, but slept during the final hours of the KS.

Congratulations.
And now .. to find a DM for the drow campaign... :o

If you're referring to the additional adventure at the 40k mark, he said that it'd likely be a $10 add-on should they hit the 40k. So yeah, it should be available later before the survey process.

Yeah, I was referring to that one! Thanks for the clarification, kevin_video!

I was never sure if you could buy add-ons after the Kickstarter had officially concluded. Good to know.

40K, woohoo, they made it! I watched the final hour tick away wondering how close it would be. As Gary said, there were about 20 minutes to spare, but it picked up suddenly and went up nearly a thousand in that last half hour or so.

I am really looking forward to this set of modules. I have run all-elven and all-drow campaigns before so I am really excited about this all-dwarven one.

My thanks to everyone who helped for making that extra adventure possible.

Hats off to Gary and Mike as well for their hard work on Throne of Night and for their previous ingenuity and skill demonstrated in Way of the Wicked.

@ Endzeitgeist - Gary just sent out a final message to everyone who pledged. Depending on your level, the adventure's free. Or at least a version of it is. If you wanted to upgrade it, you can. Otherwise it's $10.

@ Alzrius - Depends if the company allows you to or not. Because the 40k mark was so close to the expiration, he's allowing everyone one last shot at the additional adventure.

Kickstarters often get a big upswell in the last few hours, even the last hour. This is because they offer "stretch" rewards. People might like the base product and pledge the amount they need to get the base product, but then the company offers a bonus ONLY IF they hit a goal. That goal is out of the consumer's hands.

So as a consumer, I can "overpledge" and cross my fingers that they hit the goal. If they don't, my "overpledge" is money down the drain - I get the same rewards I would have gotten without overpledging.

Therefore, the smart thing to do as a consumer is to wait until the last day, even the last hour. If they're over the final goal, no worries, increase the pledge and enjoy the stretch rewards. If it's super close, wait until the bitter end.

It's the only way to be sure that you will get what you're paying for (as opposed to overpaying for).

Have the surveys been sent out yet?

I have only 1 thing to say: F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5

No surveys yet. Gary just got back from vacation. Might be about a week before we see things. And then he'll be off to Gen Con.

Liberty's Edge

Actually it's Origins next week. Maybe when I'm there I can get an answer about the Creature Cards kickstarter. It was originally going to be delivered in March which got pushed off to May. Well now it's June and we haven't had an update since April 17th.

Liberty's Edge

Well another two days have gone by. He's been on kickstarter and he's updated his facebook page but still no answers to what is going on with the Creatures Card kickstarter. People are beginning to wonder if this is a scam.

I supported the Creature Cards Kickstarter and Throne of Night. I am guessing that there were unforseen delays with the Creature Cards.

Fire Mountain Games is generally very well viewed by the community. I have a hard time seeing them throw that away by running a scam Kickstarter.

@kevin_video: I got my survey yesterday.

-Aaron

I also got my survey yesterday. E-mail said that due to additional content boosting page count to 110, there will be a delay before PDFs are issued to kickstarters.

I'm not worried about Throne of Night, but the Creature Card concerns do seem to have been handed poorly. :s

Liberty's Edge

I know they are ususally regarded well but at this point with two months of no communication people are beginning to wonder and it can't be helping their reputation any, especially among those who aren't familiar with them. People have even emailed Gary directly and have gotten no responses. I keep posting here as when you hit forums on firemountaingames.com it send you to this board.

Grand Lodge

Got my survey as well, but I couldn't remember all that I had paid for. Hopefully Gary gets back to me on that.

As for the delays, I understand everyone's frustration. I'm starting to get antsy as well. However, I'm going to keep the faith a while longer.

Grand Lodge

We got an update on what's going on. More delays as was suspected. Also, his silence was more or less just an error on his part in bad decision making. Silence is not always golden.

Liberty's Edge

Glad to see the update. I can wait for a good product. Me happy camper for now. :)

Somebody slipped up. The new Wayfinder (#9) has an advertisement for Throne of Night 1 listed as "available now".

I tried to contact Gary about it, but he's at PaizoCon right now.

Yeah, I figured it was just because of the inevitable release delays occurring after the advertisement was secured. I purchased Way of the Wicked as it released. I have learned to expect to wait an extra two months beyond the scheduled release date for Fire Mountain Games products. That's ok. I do not buy their products for their production punctuality.

When I first looked at Way of the Wicked's release schedule and realized that not only did the AP go to 20th level, but that it was essentially written by one person and illustrated by one other and that it had only a six month release schedule I immediately knew that the schedule was far beyond realistic. The Throne of Night kickstarter was not really any different. Yeah, Gary left himself a year this time, but Throne of Night is really just as ambitious as Way of the Wicked in many ways. Consequently I expected two month delays beyond the release dates, even for backers, to be inevitable.

I do have one question, though. Does anyone know if Throne of Night was being written to use the "Kingdom Building" rules like Kingmaker did? I was under the impression that it was. The hex maps just beg for it.

Well, Way of the Wicked had its set back simply due to Gary's computer frying, and there not being a backup copy of anything. As such he practically had to re-write everything from scratch that wasn't somewhere amongst his written notes that he had laying around. As such a lot of things that were supposed to be in Book 6 got missed out on completely and now we have a Book 7 coming out next year with all of the add-ons.

In the later books there's going to be rules on how to rebuild the kingdom you find, just as there's some in Book 6 of Way of the Wicked. He might add on more, or at least reference the Ultimate Campaign book that Paizo released, as well as Kingmaker. This adventure's supposed to be very sandbaggy like Kingmaker was so it'd make sense.

Yeah, I was pretty sure it was a giant underground sandbox. A setting like that just begs for kingdom building. If there is no accommodation for it in the modules then I will just let the players have the option to try a "self-start" kingdom once they have accomplished a task of significance. Probably by placing an iron mine as a beginning resource that could provide a kingdom with a starting income but be too cost intensive to be worth exploiting on a personal or downtime scale.

Heck, it might even be worth a look at the Ultimate Kingdom rules by Legendary games. As I understand it they have rules for city building in unusual and adverse environments/terrains in there. Just a thought.

That would work great with this AP, given that Ultimate Rulership has rules for underground and cavern cities.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I thought that I remembered reading that somewhere, probably in one of your excellent reviews. Thanks for the confirmation, Eric.

The Exchange

Can anyone help with a suitable adventure for 4 dwarves if this one doesn't materialize in the next ten days? The characters are already built and I have very little time to get creative.

Cheers

This one should help get you guys started. It's 3.5, but you can easily adapt it for PF. Remember that the CR will be -1 or -2 for those with PC or NPC classes. That might change things up a bit.

If they were higher level I'd say Rise of the Drow, which is a free PF adventure path from level 6 to 15. It can be found at Adventure-A-Week.

The Throne of Night Kickstarter just updated. No release date yet, but he says things are moving in that direction. I know that this is not the news that everyone was hoping for, but it IS news.

It will come out sooner or later.

And given Gary and the work he has done recently it will be awesome.
