Delver's Diary - review of Champions of Purity

My review of Champions of Purity (with a PFS spin) is now up on Delver's Diary:

Pathfinder characters must either be good- or neutral-aligned, so a Player’s Companion focusing on playing good characters (not just paladins) should be useful to many players in Pathfinder Society. Ultimately, I find that whether this is in fact true depends upon how much your character’s goodness is a central theme in her backstory, personality, or motivation.

Read the rest of the article here, which also directly quotes the Additional Resources entry for the book.

Excellent review! I've been particularly interested in this book, since I enjoy roleplaying characters with affinities for some of the gods. I have a question, though - are the new domains and subdomains affiliated with any gods, or are they essentially unlinked to Society play as it is now?

Each subdomain (there are no new domains, just subdomains) has an associated domain it's tied to, so my understanding is you'd have to worship the appropriate deity (one with the associated domain). I think it'd be OK to summarize them here...

Cooperation (Community - Erastil, Kurgess)
Dragon (Scalykind - Aspu)
Imagination (Luck - Desna, Kofusachi, Shelyn)
Judgment (Law - Aspu, Iomedae, Torag)
Redemption (Good - Iomedae, Sarenrae)
Revelation (Sun - Iomedae, Sarenrae, Shizuru)
Revelry (Chaos - Cayden Cailean, Desna, Kofusachi)

Not quite, I'm afraid. As I understand it, deities in PFS are also associated with subdomains. For example, Shelyn is associated with Good and its subdomain, Agathion, but not Azata, which is another subdomain of Good.

Good Review Doug Thank you.

Great review. You covered a lot and there is still even more options that look darned amazing. Holy bombs for alchemists, sacred sneak attack rogue talent single-handedly will save me the cost of a holy bow for my ninja. The witch hexes like you mention would be quite neat for a good-aligned witch. Sadly peacebond is not as useful (most baddies already have weapons drawn when you meet them) but it can shut down some archers and it suffers less from GMs going "oh, not ANOTHER slumber hex witch"

The spells on this book are AMAZING. My paladin will prepare some of the angelic aspect spells (I don't have the book in front of me, I know they are called something different) as any ways to make my paladin get a fly speed are amazing in my book. Or many, many scrolls of them.

OK, thanks for the clarification. Just so you know, the deities I listed above are specifically listed in Champions of Purity, so I would guess that you can go by those.

The inside front cover has a list of many good deities and their associated domains and subdomains -- which includes the new subdomains. Also, each subdomain listing contains the names of deities who have those subdomains. (Essentially a crossreference, since I didn't see differences between the two different ways of listing it.)

Also, the Additional Resources has approved both of those sections for use in PFS.

Excellent, excellent. I only ask because I remember somewhere somebody mentioning that there was a subdomain with no diety attached to it, and while it's not specifically banned, there is no legal way to use it in PFS.

Except with perhaps the Separatist archetype.

Dark Archive

Any idea why the Celestial Rage Powers on page 22 are not listed as legal for PFS play? They do not seem particularly overpowered but are not listed in the PFS additional resources list.
