Since moving to WA, what do you miss most from Austin?

You're a giant fan of one author in particular. Who is that and why?

3)So what kind of music do you listen too?

4)Do you have any favorite books and/or writers?

5)What things have inspired your work?

6)How did get started in playing D&D?

7)What is the toughest fight as a player in D&D/Pathfinder that you ever been in?

1. Nope, just those two.

2. I have designed a bunch of monsters. Well over a hundred in the last few years. I've had monsters in AP bestiaries, hardcover bestiaries, written some for Kobold Quarterly and was lead developer on Kobold Press' Midgard Bestiary. Yep, bunch of monsters.

3. I listen to a wide variety of music. While there are certain artists I don't quite like, there isn't a genre I dislike.

4. Again, I'm bad at picking favorites, but some writers I like that come to mind are: Kurt Vonnegut, William S. Burroughs, Chuck Palahniuk, William Gibson, Hunter S. Thompson and many many more.

5. I get inspired by all kinds of things. Media I consume, the weird and messed up things in our day to day lives, dreams, fleeting thoughts, inspiring friends, and other creative people I work with.

6. My first RPG experience was playing Marvel Roleplaying with my cousin who just got the boxed set. Shortly after, I found a copy of Descent Into the Depths of the Earth module at a second-hand book store. I was 11 and didn't realize that there were rulebooks that went along with it, so I brought it to my cousin's house all excited. We didn't have the other books, so we made it up as we went along and had a blast (despite not really playing the game as it was intended).

7. My memory isn't super great, so I'm going to cheat and go with an encounter from a few months ago where our group was infiltrating a cult and we interrupted a ritual they were performing, basically breaking into combat in the middle of a chapel filled with cultists and their leader. Halfway into that combat a big umbral dragon showed up and that's when everything went further south. My character ended up blind, affected by fear, then eventually 0 Str. We all got captured and thrown in prison cells.

Favorites again! Umm, I'd say Kurt Vonnegut. His stories were fun and dark at the same time. In the same breath he can make you laugh while you realize the human condition is plagued by s##$heads. I always appreciated that approach.

As a general concept that's what I mean, but I have no solid ideas what form it should take.

I feel like I'm missing a reference, so I'll say that the three choices presented in the first question are so similar that the second question is certainly answered in the affirmative.

Do you have a favorite Golarion fan-theory?

Shadow Lodge

I have a development question for you. When developing rules and descriptions of the weapons and armor, did the team have an expert come in? Was there a research team put together? How did that process work? I have been playing for years and always wondered how that happened and how somebody gets into the field of RPG development at all.

Do you mean the crazy stuff folks like you, Mikaze, Set, and others come up with for what really happened to Aroden or what's the deal with the Eye of Abendego or who's a veiled master?

I really enjoyed reading the paranoid hypotheses on who may or may not be veiled masters, but I especially liked the conspiracy theories of Golarion thread. There was some good stuff in there.

Nope, no experts involved. At least it's not like we had a weapons expert come into the office and demonstrate a few dozen different weapons. The bulk of those decisions happened before I came to work here, and most of those were handed down from 3.5. That said, we have a team with very eclectic interests, so it's not uncommon to find someone nearby that knows a thing or two about a thing or two. For everything else, there's research.

Since Pathfinder isn't quite a real life simulator, the main thing to consider when making new weapons is general performance, weight, and size. Then you compare it to other existing things and determine whether you need a new weapon at all or if something else already covers the concept. Trying to get too close to an exact simulation is madness and is often overly complex.

For example, the last time I created new weapons was for the upcoming Pathfinder Adventure Path volume Rasputin Must Die! (that takes place on Earth during WWI). Brandon and I (mostly Brandon to be honest) researched what weapons were in wide use at that time AND in that place. Then we compared our research and design notes to existing firearms in Ultimate Combat. After that it was a development process of working with the design team to make sure the rules were clear, not going to break the game, and satisfied the concept they needed to fit. It was a team effort for sure with each person adding a bit of their own expertise to the stew.

Nope. That's because hazards aren't something that a character can typically control and it's in a different enough category that it would complicate things. (For example, can you enchant a hazard?)

I haven't had to do that yet, but I'd handle them the way the rules mention (unless it was unfun for everyone, then I'd change it to something fun.)

Well, the big push of the rush was a couple months back where we were trying to get everything done that we will have at GenCon. PaizoCon was a rush for me because I had to finish writing the game I ran and just get a zillion loose ends tied up before the show. Between then and now has mainly been me trying to build a buffer with all the stuff I have to do so being away at GenCon doesn't cut too deeply into my production times.

Now, as for your question, I'm looking forward to having absolutely nothing to do on a weekend. That'd be awesome. I'm also looking forward to GenCon because that's where I see a bunch of my friends that I only typically see once or twice a year.

As a developer of Paizo what tropes do you feel are still missing from Golarion?

And in fantasy rpgs in general?

1) What's your favorite evil (with evil subtype) outsider race, and why?

2) What's your favorite non-evil outsider race, and why?

3) Which of the Outer Planes is your favorite, and why?

4) Would you actually want to play a flumph as a PC if given the opportunity? If so, what class would you pick?

5) What are three of your favorite insect-themed Pathfinder monsters?

6) What are your three favorite deities in the Golarion setting?

7) What are your three favorite outsider demigods (elemental lords, archdevils, empyreal lords, four horsemen, etc.) in the Golarion setting?

8) Is convincing a flumph to wear a pink tutu flumph abuse?

9) What are three of your favorite non-PC humanoid races (adlets, boggards, dark creepers, gnolls, lizardfolk, troglodytes, etc.)

10) If you like insects, do you like insect-like races like bog striders, mothmen, and thriae, or are they not bug-like enough to appeal to your insect love (though perhaps still being appealing on their own merits)?

Hmmm. This one made me think a bit. I think we have quite a bit in Golarion, so it's hard for me to think of one thing that's missing. If I find it, and it's good, I'll likely try to work it in somewhere. Some tropes are missing for good reasons, either they are bad tropes, or something that we just don't want in our world. One thing I like in fantasy is blending things instead of doing direct ports, and I think it's cool that we have a bit of both approaches in our world.

1) Divs, because I created them. (Well, to be honest, the real world made them, I just got the chance to stat them up and bring them to Pathfinder.)

2) Azatas, because I like the CG feel to them. They also seem to be a bit more varied and even somewhat alien compared to some of the other good outsiders.

3) Abaddon, because it's terrible and desolate.

4) I'd play one if it was right for the game and worked with the other players. I'd certainly pick a caster class. Probably a sorcerer or oracle. Maybe a bard or cleric.

5) Grig, jorogumo, azruverda, aranea, ettercap, formians, thriae. That's more than three, but... YOU CAN'T HOLD ME BACK WHEN IT COMES TO BUGS!! ;)

6) Cayden Cailean, Desna, Norgorber

7) Ahriman, Magdh, Ashava

8) Maybe, but I don't think so. They can think for themselves and make their own decisions, so if a flumph wants to wear a pink tutu who am I to judge the flumph or the convincer?

9) LOVE dark folk! Also, chokers and bugbears.

10) I adore insects and I like those creatures you listed. I'm pretty sure my love of bugs plays into my appreciation of those creature.

8) What's your opinion on flumph space druids?
