Limited Wish and Raise Dead

Rules Questions

A PC sorcerer is in possession of a limited wish scroll. He can cast it. He wishes to cast Raise Dead. According to the CRB, limited wish can be used for that spell. The sorcerer has the component for Raise Dead. Can limited wish from a scroll be used to cast Raise Dead?

Yes, why is this a question?

It came up at a gaming table.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Again, why is this a question?

"I have a short sword. The rulebook says that a short sword does 1d6 points of damage. How much damage does my short sword do?"

A gm said I couldn't use the scroll to cast raise dead because the material component for raise dead wasn't part of the making of the scroll

From the SRD: "When a limited wish spell duplicates a spell with a material component that costs more than 1,000 gp, you must provide that component (in addition to the 1,500 gp diamond component for this spell)."

I suspect you have the kind of GM who looks for reasons to say 'No'. This is perhaps the most fatiguing sort of GM. Because why try anything new, when you're just going to be shot down?

I suggest you begin asking questions in the form of 'If our enemy X wanted to Y, using Z resource, could they do that?'

Because then, the GM is looking for a reason to say 'Yes'.

Your GM may not even be aware they are doing this. They may even feel they have a duty to 'check for the No' before really thinking about things. If it's any comfort, some will do research, find 5 Yes, 1 No, and get stuck on the No. Dutifully, of course.

To which, I have been known to say, "Well, that is remarkably not fun.", and walk away.

Should have just cast reincarnate with the scroll as it has a lower material component then.

by the book a scroll of limited wish costs 3775gp.
Raise dead costs 5000gp to cast so 7275gp to buy a scroll.

I'm really not up with the idea that a wizard buy a scroll that can be used to raise dead (and a lot of other things if necessary) for around half the cost of a cleric making a scroll of raise dead.

I'd allow the scroll to be used but you'd have to provide the costly material components.

When you scribe a scroll material components are consumed then so when you use the scroll you don't need them. If the scroll was never scribed with that components the GM is right. As Tarvi described, you'd basically be letting them cheap out on any spell that normally falls within the domain of limited wish.
