[Fire Mountain Games] WotW: Book 2 questions

I have a few questions on the Way of the Wicked: book 2 (call forth darkness):

#1) How was it intended that the 7th knot (White Ravens) notify/message the PCs when they warn them of trouble? Physically walk to the horn? It is too far (16 miles?) for most message spells...

#2) Are the two Greater Ceustodaemons (3-13) vulnerable to the usual ways to banish them to their home plane? (E.g. the two moon dogs in Event three: with their "Bay" ability to Dispel Evil or Dismissal). What (if any) effects does the silver seal contribute to this? The True Name amulets?

#3) The moon dogs (mentioned above) have their Plane Shift ability hampered by the silver seal. However, can't they just use their Dispel Magic (Spell-like ability) which forces them back to their plane of origin?

1) The book states that they send messengers. One dies at the tree.

2) Not sure

3) Not sure

Thanks AoM,

Hopefully Gary McBride can chime in on #2 and #3...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Banesfinger,

1) AoM is correct. Physical messengers are sent to the horn.

2) Dismissal, instead of actually banishing them, probably just rips them apart and still trapped at the Horn, they reform a month later just as if they had been killed. Having their true name amulets just means they'll do what you say instead of what they think is best for the defense of the Horn.

3) I would say the same effect that stops Plane Shift also stops them from using dispel magic in this way.

Also, don't be afraid of making the magic of the Horn a little capricious and hard to figure it out. After all, its the magic of a decade old holy curse interacting with the lingering aura of a place of unspeakable evil. The fact that the magic sometimes "fights with itself" should come as no surprise and makes the magic seem ... well, a little more magical.

Hope that helps,
Gary McBride

Thanks for the info.

Has anyone else had their players filling the entire Horn with Glyphs of Warding?

Sorry if I am hijacking the thread a bit, but I also have questions related to book 2, so instead of creating a new thread, I will just had my questions here :)
I already sent them to Gary, but I think he is on vacation right now, and in every case it will be interesting to here others people opinion.

First: I have hard time determining the DC for the Evil organisation of my PC, it seems that it can become really hard real quick, and I am not sure what criteria really have an impact on that DC.
For example, the one that allow to make money? Would that always be DC 8? As obviously the player will always aim for the safest way to make money?
The issue I see is that there is no real way for the player to take risks in this and potentially be rewarded more.
The only case I see the DC becoming higher is actually for assassination and stuff like this, where who the target is can obviously make things harder.
Any advice on this?

Second: There is already two option for the PC to become more than what they are originally, in becoming a vampire or lich.

I am pondering the possibility myself of adding a third option and wanted your opinion on it.

What I am thinking is actually what is being done already with Grumblejack, with the possibility of turning him into an half fiends in book 2 if he get into Vetra Kali sanctum.

My idea would be to reward a player particularly devoted to Asmodeus, especially a cleric or Paladin, by also becoming an half fiend (obviously I wouln't allow him to stack becoming a lich or vampire on top of it).

That would go through a feat I would call "Chosen of Asmodeus" or something along the line, and I was thinking of giving the possibility to acquire it to the most devoted character especially if she is the one who completed most of the 666 prayers and maybe broke the seal in the end with the last prayer.

Especially one of my player is a fallen Aasimar Cleric of Asmodeus, giving her the option to fully embrace her fall and become some kind of Erinyes of Asmodeus (by getting the half fiend template), could be really nice and flavorful for the character.

What do you think about it?
Is it too easy to acquire?
Too powerful?
Would that require more feats?
Is there another time in the AP when it would be better to introduce?

Thanks!

I've actually partially answered the 2nd question. Other than on here, we've also got threads for each individual book. We try to answer those kinds of questions here.

When Gary answers you (when he's back from vacation), be sure to add your answers here because we're curious what he has to say as well.

Check out my say on the whole half-fiend thing here. I'm not against it, and others have wondered the same thing.
