Multiple damage types and Damage Reduction

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

I have a gunslinger in my campaign, and she is about to go up against a lich in our next game. I was wondering about the damage type entry on the guns. They list the damage as bludgeoning and piercing. So they count as both damage types.

How does this react with a lich's DR/bludgeoning and magic? If the pistol is magical, what happens? It counts as both bludgeoning and piercing, and only one of those goes through the DR.

it goes through.

the weapons that have multiple damage types get an advantage, in that if any of their types beats DR, the entire weapon beats DR.

Since bullets count as both, they bypass both bludgeoning and piercing DR.

In this case, provided he has a magical gun, he will bypass both the magical and the bludgeoning parts and do full damage.

Similar to one of the maces, it does both B/P ... so bypasses skeletons DR of 5/bludgeoning. It would also bypass something with piercing DR as well.

If the entry says or, you can hurt it with either/or. If it says and, you need both to bypass the DR. Weapons that deal two types can bypass both of those kinds of DR. If its magical all its projectiles go through magical DR. So...

If she has a magical gun she bypasses the DR, if not she can't. A gun will bypass Bludgeoning, but the Lich still has DR against magic. If you want to toss her a bone there are a few kinds of spells/oils you can toss on a weapon to bypass DR.

Alright, that's good to know! Thanks a lot everyone!

It needs a bless, then it can affect the lich because then its ammo will be both bludgeoning and magic. It has to be both to bypass DR.

A balors DR is cold iron and good, so your weapon would need to be both to by pass.

Bless provides a morale bonus, it won't make the attack magical.

Correct. The appropriate spell to use would be Magic Weapon.

I think he meant this Bless. Which is a cheap oil for weapons and meant for evil creatures like say... liches.
