Racial Traits / Racial Feats / Traits

Rules Questions

A group of friends and I are just starting Pathfinder and we're in the process of creating characters for the first time. For the most part, I think we have the basics down, but one thing I'm not sure of and have trouble understanding is the way racial traits/feats and even traits in general work.

For example, a dwarf has the following racial traits according to the core rulebook:

+2 Constitution, +2 Wisdom, –2 Charisma
Medium
Slow and Steady
Darkvision
Defensive Training
Greed
Hatred
Hardy
Stability
Stonecunning
Weapon Familiarity (Battleaxe, heavy pick, warhammer)
Languages (Common and dwarven)

However, another website I've found, http://www.d20pfsrd.com , says that dwarves have the following racial feats:

Brewmaster
Cleave Through
Cloven Helm
Dented Helm
Giant Killer
Goblin Cleaver
Hard-headed
Ledge Walker
Orc Hewer
Shatterspell
Toxic Recovery

It also has a race traits section, in which the traits listed with a dwarf prerequisite aren't even the same as the ones in the core rulebook.

Firstly, do I get every racial trait that the core rulebook gives me?

Secondly, why are the traits different and which source should I be taking as most reliable?

Lastly, what's the difference between racial traits and racial feats?

The first list from the Core Rulebook applies in full to any dwarven character. The list of racial "feats" are added options for you to choose from for your 1st lvl feat (in place of whatever other feat you would pick). The Traits are replacements for the options from the core rulebook that permit you to "swap out" the new ability at the cost of losing the core ability permanently. Each trait will include in it's description which ability it replaces.

Race traits are just traits specifically tied to a race. Traits of that sort are an optional rule that allows you to expand on a characters backstory and skills. Most groups I've been in allow 2.

Racial traits are those things you get just for being a dwarf. There are alternatives to the core you can swap in and out for specific racial traits, and they are what make your dwarf a dwarf. You know, short, hates orcs, good with rocks.

Race Feats are feats specific to dwarves. Some dms may allow other races to take these, but usually they're fluffed to be extra dwarfy in this case. You meet the requirements and you can take them as you would any other feat.

It works like this:

First, you have the basic, vanilla Dwarf:

Spoiler:
Standard Racial Traits

Ability Score Racial Traits: Dwarves are both tough and wise, but also a bit gruff. They gain +2 Constitution, +2 Wisdom, and –2 Charisma.
Size: Dwarves are Medium creatures and thus receive no bonuses or penalties due to their size.
Type: Dwarves are humanoids with the dwarf subtype.
Base Speed: (Slow and Steady) Dwarves have a base speed of 20 feet, but their speed is never modified by armor or encumbrance.
Languages: Dwarves begin play speaking Common and Dwarven. Dwarves with high Intelligence scores can choose from the following: Giant, Gnome, Goblin, Orc, Terran, and Undercommon. See the Linguistics skill page for more information about these languages.

Defense Racial Traits

Defensive Training: Dwarves gain a +4 dodge bonus to AC against monsters of the giant subtype.
Hardy: Dwarves gain a +2 racial bonus on saving throws against poison, spells, and spell-like abilities.
Stability: Dwarves gain a +4 racial bonus to their Combat Maneuver Defense when resisting a bull rush or trip attempt while standing on the ground.

Feat and Skill Racial Traits

Greed: Dwarves gain a +2 racial bonus on Appraise checks made to determine the price of non-magical goods that contain precious metals or gemstones.
Stonecunning: Dwarves gain a +2 bonus on Perception checks to notice unusual stonework, such as traps and hidden doors located in stone walls or floors. They receive a check to notice such features whenever they pass within 10 feet of them, whether or not they are actively looking.

Senses Racial Traits

Darkvision: Dwarves can see perfectly in the dark up to 60 feet.

Offense Racial Traits

Hatred: Dwarves gain a +1 racial bonus on attack rolls against humanoid creatures of the orc and goblinoid subtypes because of their special training against these hated foes.
Weapon Familiarity: Dwarves are proficient with battleaxes, heavy picks, and warhammers, and treat any weapon with the word “dwarven” in its name as a martial weapon.

All dwarfs start with those Racial Traits. Then, there's a list of "alternate racial traits" which will allow you to swap out one or two of these with an alternative. For example,

Ancient Enmity: Dwarves have long been in conflict with elves, especially the hated drow. Dwarves with this racial trait receive a +1 racial bonus on attack rolls against humanoid creatures of the elf subtype. This racial trait replaces hatred.

You trade out your +1 attack bonus vs orcs and goblins for +1 vs elves. It's always a specific trade-out; you can't swap out 'Greed' instead of 'Hatred', for example. Some will replace two or more traits.

Racial Feats, on the other hand, are just normal feats that have a particular race as a prerequisite to take. If you have the appropriate racial subtype, you qualify to take the feat at any time you are granted a standard bonus feat (ie. odd levels). You don't get Racial Feats automatically; you have to "spend" a feat slot to gain them.

Race Traits (as opposed to Racial Traits) are the kinds of Traits that count as "half-feats". Traits were introduced, iirc, in the Advanced Players Guide and, by standard use, you are granted two on character creation. Some are general, others require you to meet a racial or religious prerequisite, etc.

Just so you're not confused, OP, this is incorrect. Racial feats are just like any other feat, except that they have being a certain race as a prerequisite.

Well, incomplete. You're not required to take a feat with a race prerequisite, or a feat from the ARG, at 1st level or from any particular grant of feats, unless the feat itself says so.
