Printable battlemaps and VT maps for The Hook Mountain Massacre
Maps By: Bwatford
Program Used: Dunjinni
If you use these please leave a comment.
.JPG Preview = Small preview of the entire map. Lets you see the content before downloading the larger files.
PDF Battlemap = Suitable for printing and assembly on standard sized paper.
PNG High resolution = Exported map image at 200dpi .PNG images. These images will serve two purposes.
First - If someone wants to take the file to a print shop or kinkos they can be printed out on a large format printer and will print to scale at 1" per 5 foot for use with miniatures. That way you get one map without having to put the pdf together however this option can get expensive.
Second - If you want to use them for VT you can scale them down depending on the VT you are using. Most virtual tabletop programs tend to use maps at 50 or 100 pixels per grid square. Battlegrounds works best with maps that are 122 pixels per grid square (this ensures no pixelation even at full zoom). The images I will be uploading is at 200 pixels per grid so they will scale down to whatever you will need, just use a graphics program to re-size the images. I don't suggest using .JPG as they will loose a lot of clarity.

Whether in my online forum game or my in person game, I've always used the maps from the PDFs for a digital display (flat TV in my in person game). I am always happy when people re-do AP maps in a more detailed style, especially when I happen to be running that AP at the time. As a GM who just started the RotRL in a PbP game... THANK YOU. So very very much. These are fantastic.

Fantastic job! I have decided to splurge on this AP and have bought lots of the minis (one of my group has a ridiculously large mini collection so I focussed on the unique ones for RoTRL).
But these maps will make it extra special. I plan to place each map under a sheet of clear, strong vinyl and the cover the vinyl with whiteboard marker (or something similar - open to suggestions to avoid hand colouring over an entire map!) and then rub out sections to reveal the map beneath.
May I ask how long it took you to do each map? I am a complete numpty with graphics software but might have a crack at book 1 if it won't take me too long.

@ Exarx
Sorry nothing for Sandpoint, just running one of my groups through Hook Mountain as part of another campaign.
The next maps that will be coming up from me in about a week or so will be the maps in Reign of Winter Book 1 Snows of Summer. Gotta spice up the boring maps and make them printable to scale.
@ Gallo
I just cover sections with construction paper and remove them as needed. or you could just put down one page at a time of the pdf map as they reach it.
Each map takes about 2 - 4 hours to do, depending on the complexity of them. Obviously the more details the more time. Shadowing takes the longest. Eveything I do I do in Dundjinni which is now off the market.
I am sure some of the others here have alternatives like Campaign cartographer etc. I have no experience with it but I hear it is pretty good but does have a steep learning curve.

Every little bit helps right now since it takes a lot of time and effort to do these maps. So if you enjoy using them and would like to see more of them please help out.

The .PNG is scaled at 200dpi which is 1"equals five feet. If you bring the file to the print shop and they have a wide format printer then there should not be a problem.
It may be showing as a reduced 8x10 on your computer so that you can see the whole image but when I load it in paint or photo shop and click view 100% then you can see the real size of it.

Just thought Id mention that Ive started running my turn of the AP (Hook Mountain Massacre) After the sorta cakewalk of the Graul Homested (Mammy put up a bit of a fight and I got someone into negatives). The maps were very useful. for me (as I suck at getting dimensions right when Im drawing quickly). They are now on their way to Fort Rannick (after going back for some Remove curse spells). Ive got the maps printed and ready to go.
So Thanks again Billy, for a job well done!

When I try to upload the Graul Homestead Ground Floor PNG version, it completely loads up and I get the message "The image (file name) cannot be displayed because it contains errors."
Is there something else I need to do? I am one who wants to take the more expensive route and print the map up on a large sheet (probably around 24"x30") and put it on a poster board.

Hobbun |

It actually didn't allow me to rename it. I got the error message when clicking the link and uploading the file. But I've since rebooted my computer when trying to opening it last and it now opened fine.
It was trying to open it in my Firefox browser. I did do a "Save as" with it and it now opens in Windows Photo Gallery. Will that work if I put it on a flash drive and take it to a nearby print store and have it plotted out on a large sheet using 1" squares?
Or do I need a different program for that?

Hobbun |

The image is ready to go.... put on a flash drive and take it to them and it should print at 1 inch to a square.
The image should be at 200dpi already which is 1 inch to a square for printing.
Great, thanks! I just need to download the remaining maps now.
I know you said that you didn’t run your players through Burnt Offerings, but still a shame you didn’t do maps for Glassworks or Thistletop as these look so good and good maps are hard to find.
Thanks again!
Oh, and I plan to go over and donate.

These maps are absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for posting them. I needed a supplemental map to fill in an area that was not covered by them. I noticed that there was no map for the top of the dam (Area C6) where you fight the destructive ogres. I put one together this morning to use for my guys. I borrowed a few textures from the excellent maps provided by BWatford here so that my map would be visually tied in to the others for my players (Specifically the skull wall texture. All of the other textures I used are freely available ones. I hope there is no problem with my minor borrowing.
I am using these amazing maps extensively and just thought I might try to supplement this excellent work in some small (much less talented) way. Hope this map helps you guys a bit.

If there is any issue with the use of the texture just let me know and I will edit it to remove the borrowed bit.

Thank you Billy for the amazing maps! I printed them out on card stock at the highest quality setting, and then spent a couple of weekends mounting all of them on foam board. My players loved the attention to detail that you put in, and they noticed just how much time it must have taken you to create these.
Please check out our photos of your maps in action here:
I'll post more photos in the coming months as we continue our romp through the Hook Mountain Massacre.
Thanks again,
Adam

Billy,
A final thanks for helping make our experience with The Hook Mountain Massacre an unforgettable one. We just finished using the last of your maps from Skull's Crossing and posted the pictures:
I ended up drawing out Hook Mountain itself on a Chessex Mondomat so I could have the 10ft. scale as noted, and included those pics as well for any prospective GMs looking to draw the same. The clanhold (area D6) was the only room that wouldn't fit the massive mat, but since the ogres in that room will likely be drawn to the fight in area D5, most of your battle should take place in the plenty of the space that still fits from D6.
Thanks again,
