Prediction for the next pathfinder miniature set!

The Exchange

I'm going to guest the next set they are going to do is Reign of Winter because by then book 6 of the series will be out when this set is released. Book 6 of shattered star was released when the current set was released, so this is my prediction.

What is everyone else's guess?

I'm so excited and can't wait to find out the next set. Shattered Star was a great set, and I think this will be a great one too.

Shattered Star WAS a remarkably good set, with a few minor exceptions (grub swarm, I'm looking in your direction here). Reign of Winter is a fair guess for the next set, but I wonder if Paizo might hold off on it because some of the potential minis are way too specific to that particular adventure path (machine-gun toting dudes and the Dancing Hut being reasonable choices for this path, but probably useless in most other games).

That is a good question. I'm sure they will give us some that are specific and some that we can use in other games.

I have to say that, as a grub swarm, it was really well done. Probably won't get a lot of use (generic creepy-crawly swarm) but it really did look like a pile of maggots!

The problem with the grub swarm was twofold:

1.) The swarm mechanics operate by having the swarm share the same space as the individual(s) that the swarm is attacking. The sloped nature of the grub swarm mini makes this tricky at best.

2.) Swarms take up a 10'by 10' area. The grub swarm mini is on a Small base. This means that the mini is two size categories smaller than the swarms in the bestiaries.

So, yes, it does really look like a pile of maggots, but sadly it looks like a pile of maggots for a game that isn't using the Pathfinder system.

Having said that, Shattered Star is still a strong contender for my favorite set of pre-paints ever, so a couple of minis that fail to impress are hardly enough to sour me on what WizKids is putting out.

I seem to remember erik commenting on the difficulty of releasing them concurrently with the AP. I got the impression they wouldn't be going down that path again (due to needing to finalise sculpts when the story hadn't actually been written yet). I'd predict one of the other recent APs like skull and shackles maybe, or jade regent. Although it might be too much of a risk if the theme was too "niche-y".

in my perfect world it will be legacy of fire. :)

I'd LOVE a Jade Regent set personally .... but as much as I would WANT that to be the next set ... I almost hope that the next set is something a little more along the lines of Heroes & Monsters ... "generic" I guess (in the sense of not tied to an Adventure Path, not 'generic' looking miniatures of course).

And if the Case Premium is a Gargantuan trend continues ... hey ... looky-look here's a Gargantuan Green Dragon (and we didn't have to "shoe-horn" one into an upcoming AP first). :)

Skull & Shackles ... I'm a little "meh" on that ... although having said that ... I'd get a bunch of aquatic monsters and humanoids ... Oooh and cyclopses ... so ... okay. :)

Well ... in all honesty ... the next full set can be (and will be) whatever the fine folks at Paizo & WizKids have hammered out.

I am VERY curious to see what that is. (Is it next week yet)?

James Jacobs has said somewhere that the simultaneous release of Shattered Star has caused them a lot of grief, and they won't be repeating it soon.

Do you have a link to where he said that because I must have missed it?

I really don't care what AP they do next. I just want the quality of figures to continue to impress me. The sculpts and paint jobs to look as good as they do.

I will be happy either way.

Ah, I was thinking aesthetically rather than mechanically. Since large swarms can deform from a 10' square anyway, I don't think there is any realistic chance of getting correctly sized swarms that you can put minis on in this range. What I do is draw out the current dimensions of the swarm and just put the mini next to it as a marker of what it is, rather than as the actual swarm.

Another way to do it would be to use a flight stand like this.

Thanks for the link. If this is the case, then it would be great to just do a set like heroes and monsters. I guess we will see.

I game with a Chessex Gaming Mat (I figure most people who use miniatures would use a grid of some kind after all), so I just put my grub swarm in the middle of a 10-ft by 10-ft. square and count the spaces its sitting on as its "Threatened area". Works fine for me.

This is a good idea. I like it as it addresses the failure of being able to stand the character figure on the swarm figure.

Thanks!

For the sake of being on-topic, so far we've have one "general" monster set and two Adventure Path themed sets. It would make a lot of sense to have a general monster set to even things out, especially considering that there are a LOT of monsters without miniatures in Bestiary I, let alone the other three.

Personally, I would love to see a "Heroes Advanced" set and a "Monsters Advanced" set. Heroes Advanced could make use of the wonderful art found in the Advanced Race Guide and similar sources as well as the NPC Codex. Monsters Advanced could fill in some of the blank slates we're missing in some of the more classic and essential miniatures.

However, I'd really like to see the former set more than the latter. Looking at my WizKid miniatures wish list, there's one halfling, one gnome, and two dwarves. All of those races male. And its really not acceptable considering the plethora of art Paizo has to draw inspiration from.

A Kingmaker set would give a lot of options. And be tied into one of their most popular AP's.

A Kingmaker set would be really good.
I always hope for a "generic wilderness critter" set, chock-full of all those average beasties - small, medium and large sized snakes, scorpions, spiders, but also boars, crocodiles, lions, bats, etc. - that are a staple of pretty much every low-to-medium level adventure.

I suspect the next set will be tied to a past campaign- Kingmaker or Curse of the Crimson Throne seem like the most likely candidates.

I'm pretty sure the only reason we got a generic Heroes and Monsters set is that it was a conversion of the fantasy miniatures that Wizkids was already working on. I'm pretty sure every set for the foreseeable future will be "themed" on an AP, even if it includes creatures only somewhat tied to the actual AP's content.

Personally, I'd love to see more "mini-sets" based on the modules, like We Be Goblins. Price of Immortality would be a good set, for example, as would Falcon's Hollow.

Looks like CotCT still has all 6 volumes available in print, while Kingmaker 1-3 are sold out. I wonder if Paizo would create a tie-in product to something they no longer have to sell?

On the other hand, would they create one for a product in a rules system they no longer support?

Also, PDFs are always available for OOP issues.

I think people are looking to close at the name of the set. The Skeleton Champion miniature is based on art from Curse of the Everflame, and other minis have come from the bestiary instead of he AP. I like the idea of horror monsters based off Carrion Crown, or Arabian monsters with the Legacy of Fire tag, but I trust Paizo and Wizkids to put out whatever monsters they need.

I'm kind of guessing we'll be seeing some sort of Mythic-themed set. High-CR monsters for instance. Monsters with gear. Lots of fiends. Humanoids with heroic visual aspects, not standard guards and plain archers.

My thought is something to tie into the Mythic ruleset without being tied to specific art in the adventure path.

'Cuz you know Paizo... all about synergy.

Good point! Glad I don't have to make all of these tough business decisions.

I'd like to see the Samurai, Gunslinger and Ninja.

Primarily because when I'm teaching newbies/passing out iconics, I'd like to have the minis to match the character
