Any1 remember these old D&D rules?

In the D&D Master's Rules Box set (1986?). You could level a character to 36 and start a quest line to become immortal.

Anyone know where I can find those rules? I'd rather not buy the old box set off ebay just to see if they will fit into my campaign.

I am particularly interested in the paths to immortality. One path had something to do with forging a kingdom. Was there an artifact path? A time travel path?

any help would be great.

What did you have to do to discover the path?

Were those in the Master set, or in the Immortals set? I've heard that the immortal ascension rules in Wrath of the Immortals are different.

An OGL version of the latter's rules can be found in Dark Dungeons.


The master's set had the rules for becoming immortal. The immortal set was then released with what to do once you became one.

ive never heard of dark dungeons and i am browsing it now!


Dark Dungeons was very close! It had the immortal rules and a little bit about becoming immortal. The missing part, the best part, were the quest paths in the master's set. I wanted to offer those in my campaign. I think another one was reincarnating at level 36 and making it back to level 36 a second time...

So if anyone can outline the paths that would be great...


I never had the Master set, but I'm looking at the Rules Cyclopedia now. You know, it's strange. I could have sworn I had seen something about making it back to level 36 a second time, but I don't see that now. The closest thing I see is the Polymath path, but that doesn't say anything about 36.

Well, here's what I see.

1. Dynast. You have to create a realm, rule it for at least 20 years, make sure you have a living grandchild to inherit the throne, face at least 4 challenges to your rule, quest for an artifact to travel through time, and travel to at least three future time periods to help at least 3 of your descendants to keep their kingdoms.

2. Epic Hero. You quest for a major artifact, destroy another, train a successor, and complete an epic, nearly impossible quest taking about 5 years.

3. Paragon. You quest for an artifact, create a new magic item with components that are hard to find, including at least one impossible item, recruit at least 6 apprentices who rise at least 12 levels while in your service, and transform the land for 100 miles around to give it a unique appearance.

4. Polymath. You succeed in 3 additional lives as 3 other classes. In each of those 3 lives, you must quest for and gain the same artifact. Each time, you begin at 1st level, but the quest doesn't begin until 5th level. (The Immortal sponsor claims the artifact the first 2 times.) Then you adventure alone until you reach 12th level. You also have to adventure with one member of each human class. If any of those are killed, you have to work on resurrecting them. You must also build a monument that stands for at least 10 years.

In other words, no way in heck is this going to happen.

You ok with the rules as written in the D&D Cyclopedia rather than the boxed set? I know where that book is and can post this evening. Finding the boxed sets may take a little longer...

If I recall correctly, the issue with un-becoming an immortal and then doing it again is from Wrath of the Immortals.

It states that an immortal (one that has become a Hierarch?) can give up its immortality, becoming a level 1 mortal again. If it can make it all the way to level 36 and then reach immortality a second time, it will instantly be taken beyond the Dimensional Void (which not even the immortals can breach), finding out the mysteries that dwell on its far side.

In other words, at that point the character as "won" D&D.

Not sure if the source is right--it might have been in the old Immortals Gold Box-- but it did say something like that. I think the character became one of the "Old Ones"...

YESSSSSS that is exactly it!!!!!!!!! So from this thread I got the four recommended paths and the how to become a Hierarch.
