Keep in mind that the Special will be getting a test run at PaizoCon. So, I would hope that it gets released a bit earlier this year! :)

I did not know that. Is that a public run, meaning it will be finalized by then, or is this just a limited playtest, and then the scenario will still be tweaked and made available to GenCon GMs later? If it will really be available before PaizoCon in July, then I'm a happy camper. That will give me plenty of prep time.

It's the Friday night Special slot at PaizoCon.

Oh man, that's a brutal schedule. I can tell that the GM slots for GenCon are getting full when you volunteer for 8 slots and will have to prep 6 different scenarios, two of which you will receive a week away from the con. Good luck Netopalis! (hope the grippli boon is worth it...)

Actually, this was originally the schedule of another GM who had to back out. I hope that I can do these scenarios justice - I'm a little nervous about the 12+ table, but am determined to make it work.

This actually works out well, though. I had already independently planned to run Halls of Dwarven Lore prior to Gencon, I've ran Gods' Market Gamble 4 times and consider it to be one of my favorite scenarios. While I haven't ran Fortress of the Nail, I have played it and am really, really looking forward to it. I'm a lawyer, so the legal stuff in Golarion is really fascinating to me. All in all, I'm not upset about the schedule at all. I suspect that I'll be nearing my 4th star by the end of it. (I hit my third star last night, even though everything hasn't been reported yet.)

Bob you're insane. You're a great GM, it's true, but running 10 of 10 slots. That's just the definition of insanity.

Maybe you should switch your Diamond City 5-9 with Netopalis' 12+. Just an idea.

No one want that. 3-9 is my wheelhouse range. After last year's debacle, I am not the right guy for 12+ level play. I'll leave those high levels to the professionals like Kyle :-)

If this is outside your comfort zone, please email Mike Brock and let him know. There are other GM's who are running that scenario that may feel more comfortable with that level range.

I think that, by August, I'll be ready for it. I've been moving steadily towards higher tier stuff, and my online crew should be right there whenever we hit that level. Still, I'll give it some thought.

Silver Crusade

So with all these people's schedules here, we need some players to volunteer to be at our tables. I want to meet some of you forum people. Who wants to play at my table for Bonekeep (either part)? Or Assault on the Kingdom of the Impossible on Friday morning?

The only table I am really worried about filling will be my Saturday Morning (My Enemy's Enemy). Only 1 ticket has sold to that and we have 4 GMs running it that slot. Everything else is filled or close enough that generics/late comers will fill it up.

I am wondering if I should prep an 8th scenario for that slot.

Sovereign Court 5/5 Venture-Captain, West Virginia—Charleston aka Netopalis

I'm a bit concerned about my 8AM Thursday Halls of Dwarven Lore slot, as it's less than half full....

For those looking at tickets sold vs. available GM's:

If it's a 1-5, it'll fill up. They always do. In fact, we usually need more GMs.
If it's a 3-7, it will likely fill up. They almost always do, but there's far less data at this 'new' tier.
If it's a 5-9 or 7-11 and tickets haven't been sold, it's likely it won't happen and you should prep a 1-5 (preferably the new 1-5 if you can).

Shadow Lodge 5/5

All of my slots are sold out except for Thursday Mornings for some reason... ;) But it is 1-5, so I'm sure we'll have enough players, though right not there are only 10 out of 36 tickets sold.

Well if one of my slots falls through I am fairly sure I can sub in one of my other scenarios. All but the special are running that slot. I guess that is the benefit of having 7 scenarios to prep.

The Exchange

I'm going to bring a few of my favorite low-tier Season 0 and 1 scenarios. It seems like the older stuff has sold out, but that may be because there were fewer seats available. After running them so many times, there's hardly any prep involved.

Are you even going to bother to bring anything for Mists of Mwangi? I'm sure after 20 times you really don't need anything other than a map.

Honestly the alternative is worse. I've had tables of 1 real character and 5 pregens in a 7-11. Those tables are so hard to make fun.

Silver Crusade

Well, I'm already running one 1-5 adventure at GenCon. If I end up running it additional times, that's not a problem for me. Assault on the Kingdom of the Impossible is a fun one. I just love the first fight.

I might bring The Disappeared with me, too, just in case. I've run that one a few times already, and it's a lot of fun. Both of those have the added advantage of being quick to run, so if I'm starting a session late because I'm running something unexpected on the fly, I should still easily finish on time.

Anyone have any speculation on whether Bonekeep will always fill up, or if I might find myself GMing something else in place of those? I'm really looking forward to running part 1, but not having seen part 2 yet, I'm a little worried about limited prep time.

It's also just about time to start thinking about what PCs I'll be putting my GM credits on, since I'll actually be getting those for 3 out of my 4 GM sessions.

Shadow Lodge 5/5 Regional Venture-Coordinator, Northwest aka WalterGM

How does one check to see if their slots have players signed? I've poked through the gencon site looking for this information, but to no avail.

Silver Crusade

Search the events on the GenCon site to find your event. Then click the link to the event to see the full description. In the middle of the page, it shows the maximum number of players, and on the right, near the ticket buying info, it shows how many tickets are left.

I think he's asking if there is a way to find out if his individual table of the scenario has played assigned yet or not.

As far as I know, the answer is no, there is no way to check. I plan to be there early for muster if possible, so I can try to be the first GM seated for my regular scenarios. Dont know if thatll help or not, but I figure it cant hurt.

I was thinking the same thing, Doug

People are not assigned to a table until they walk through the door and muster (as I understand it). The best you can do is see how many empty seats there are for all tables of that scenario in the slot vs the maximum.

Ha. I just read through this whole thread to see if I will be getting to play with any of the famous/infamous GMs on these boards, and the only one that I could find a match for ended up being my local VC!

Hi Jeff Morse, I guess there is a 50% chance I will be playing at your table on Sunday.

Well, this is my first GenCon, and likely my only one for several years (It'll probably total up at over a Grand for the trip)

But, I've got my schedule worked out! Playing, not GMing.

Thursday, August 15
Slot 1 (0800-1300): #04-20 Words of the Ancients
Slot 2 (1300-1800): Non-pfs
Slot 3 (1900-2400): Non-pfs (How can you pass up a Dr Who, Bill&Ted, Back-to-the-Future crossover?)
Friday, August 16
Slot 4 (0800-1300): #04-25 Secrets Stones Keep
Slot 5 (1300-1800): #04-26 The Waking Rune
Slot 6 (1900-2400): Gen Con Season 5 Special: Siege of Diamond City
Saturday, August 17
Slot 7 (0800-1300): Non-pfs (7th Sea!)
Slot 8 (1300-1800): #05-03: The Hellknight's Feast
Slot 9 (1900-2100): We Be Goblins Too! (I'm not touching Bonekeep with a 20' pole.)
Sunday, August 18
Slot 10 (0900-1400): Open

When they arrange the muster on 4-26 Waking Rune, will they have something we can check that we do NOT want the hard mode version? So we can get all the players on the same page before-hand.

So, cross linking a bit... I might end up with Tim Statler in slot 1, Doug Miles or Mike Mramnik in slot 4, Daniel Luckett in slot 5, or lab rat in slot 9. And who knows who for the special.

I guess I could GM if you need more. I wasn't sure how to sign up for that at this Con, and assumed it was too late by now. But any of my slots besides slot 1, I can switch to the other side of the screen.

Fromper wrote:

Any word on when Bonekeep, part 2 and the Season 5 Special will be available for download, since I'm scheduled to GM both at GenCon?

I normally like to have at least a week per scenario of prep time, and given everything else involved in preparing for GenCon, including refreshing my memory on the two other scenarios I'm GMing that I'm reading and prepping months in advance, I'd really prefer at least 3 weeks prep time for these.

I really hate to come across as a whiner, but... I'm about to start whining.

I've been at tables where the GM very obviously only skimmed the adventure, and delivered a lousy gaming experience because he was obviously clueless about what he was supposed to be doing. Luckily, it doesn't happen often - PFS GMs in general tend to be pretty good. But I've always promised myself, and my players, that I would never be one of those GMs. I may not be the world's greatest GM, but at least I always prepare the best I can for the adventures I'm running. If I don't have time to thoroughly prep an adventure, I'll refuse run it. But this is usually accompanied by an offer to run some other adventure instead.

We're now less than 2 weeks from GenCon, and there are two scenarios I'm scheduled to run that still aren't available for download. And yes, I've read the pre-release version of the big special, but I can't prep all the details based on a version that I've heard is undergoing major revisions. I've got a 9 to 5 "day job", and other commitments, including GMing two PFS sessions at local game days before then, so the amount of time I can spend preparing for GenCon is rapidly dwindling.

At this point, I have to draw a line in the sand. If I can't spend all day Sunday, August 4 reading and preparing at least one of these adventures, then I just won't have time to prepare them both. So Paizo has until Saturday to make one of them available for download if they don't want me to back out of GMing one of them. Though again, I'd offer to GM a different adventure in the same slot instead.

Fromper wrote:

This is just the breaks. I'm sure the staff, including Jason Bulmahn and his bonekeep adventure, are working very hard to try and get us these adventures as soon as they can. I heard last year they didn't get the adventure until the week of Gencon. Best we can do is just try to prep as best as you can, with that kind of time frame I doubt anyone expects you to show up with hand sculpted 3D terrain for both bonekeep levels and the special.

Their minimum goal, and it was squeaky for some of the adventures last year, is to have the scenarios in our hands the Friday before the show at the very latest, to allow a full weekend for prep time.

I've got a game day where I'm runnign something I've already prepped that weekend... But I'm also putting together m email to Thorkull with my list of "things I'm bringing so you can stick it in your master tracking whatsit if you have one" of what I can cover as overflow on the slots whre there are 0 or 1 tickets sold for Storval Stairs.

3 sold out. one with 1 left. 1 half-table. I'd be thrilled to fill all of the tables so Ogre can enjoy the reports of large numbers of Storval firing off a year after release.

Besides the special, I'm also waiting for Bonekeep, part 2. It's bad enough that there are two adventures I'm still waiting for, but the fact that they're both scenarios that I expect to take twice as long as a normal adventure to prep makes it that much worse.

I'm with Fromper here to an extent. I'm not dropping if I don't get them by Sunday.

But last year I got downloads I needed for Gencon at 9pm CST Tuesday before the con and I had to leave Wed at 8Am to get there. And I do not have a laptop.

Fromper, I've sent a email to see which you prefer to drop.

Fromper: Which adventures are you missing? Looking at your schedule, it seems that everything minus the special should be available? If your schedule has changed to include one of the Season 5 scenarios, I would be willing to trade off with you - I have some scenarios that I am scheduled to run which I am not particularly fond of.
Besides the special, I'm also waiting for Bonekeep, part 2. It's bad enough that there are two adventures I'm still waiting for, but the fact that they're both scenarios that I expect to take twice as long as a normal adventure to prep makes it that much worse.

I think that, as with the special/convocation event at Paizocon, everyone will be understanding to the fact that a) this is the first time anyone ever is playing Bonekeep level 2 and that b) the GMs have little prep time and that c) it is occurring during the later part of a con, when people are usually burnt out.

Given those general understandings on the part of your player base, I wouldn't stress too much about delivering an A+ understanding of the scenario. As long as you've read through it and looked up on confusing creature abilities and tactics, your players will have a good time. You can still deliver an awesome performance as a GM, even with a scenario you're getting last minute.

Thanks for the quick reply Mike.

I'm curious, who is running the Saturday night "The Hellknight's Feast" for those of us role-players who couldn't care less about playing in Bonekeep? I'm really looking forward to that slot since all the power-gamers will be otherwise occupied.

[off topic] Also, does anybody know if should I go out of my way to try to use the same character for that scenario as I used in "Blakros Matrimony"? I would expect so, since all the relationship successes were tracked, but I still need to level that character to get him in tier. I think I can get him there, but I will have to be very deliberate about it. Thanks!
