Clarification on Shattered Star as an Adventure Path

I really want to run the shattered star adventure path with my friends in addition to my normal games at my local shop. However, they're new to pathfinder and would have to play at level 1, and it seems that I'd need to have level 3-5 characters to run part 3 of the first section.

Now, parts 1 and 2 are enough to get them to level 3, so it makes sense that they would want there to be an appropriate level for other pathfinders to do that mission. However, my question is this, am I not able to play parts 1-2 with my friends playing their level 1's for credit?

I guess I'm just confused in general as to how it works if I want to run the entire path start to finish.

From page 30 of the Guide v4.3:

Quote:
Alternatively, if you are participating in a Pathfinder Adventure Path with an ongoing group undertaking the entire, six-book campaign, you may receive credit for playing the sanctioned portions of the adventure as if you had played a pregenerated character. In this case, GMs running the Adventure Path are not bound to the rules of the Pathfinder Society Organized Play campaign (such as 20 point buy, unavailability of hero points, etc...) when running the campaign or the sanctioned portion of the adventure. Pathfinder Society characters and characters from an ongoing Adventure Path campaign may not play in the same adventure.

So run Shattered Star as a normal campaign with normal, non-PFS characters. As a bonus, you get chronicle sheets to apply to a PFS PC for every chapter you complete, a bit like GM credit.

There's no way to take a PFS PC from 1st to 17th level by playing through the whole adventure path.

So, if I run through the entire thing I get 6 chronicle sheets to be applied at their various levels? That is unfortunate...

Paz is correct. You would only get a total of 1 chronicle per book (3 xp each).

Well if you're playing through the whole AP it becomes a moot point as far as PFS credit goes. The characters won't be able to play any PFS without altering their progression through the AP, or they'll never have time (in character) to go outside the AP. Add to that the fact that a lot of APs (not Shattered Star) aren't really set up for members of the Pathfinder Society and you begin to see why the APs are sanctioned the way they are.

This is set up so that:

1. People who are playing through the APs get an additional benefit (credit for their PFS characters on the side).
2. PFS players have additional content with little or no development cost from Paizo's side.
3. PFS players get to experience a portion of the AP, perhaps interesting them in participating in the whole thing at a later date.

Michael: This has recently come up locally for me too. We just finished part one of Carrion Crown (Or rather I played in the last session which was close to the finish line). Then the discussion went on which AP to play in next, the choice being the revamped Rise of the Runelords and Shattered Star. Looks like the majority of us want to go where it all began with Rise.

I'm not really too fussed about the Chronicle Sheet issue (as its nice to not have a time limit in the AP 'game time limit that is') From my understanding my character playing in Rise will be passing on chronicle sheets to another PFS character who is eligible for them. I have no issue with that.
