Creating a character vs using pregen

Pathfinder Society

Liberty's Edge

I am headed to TotalCon in a couple weeks and decided to sign up for 2 sessions of Pathfinder society (mostly to experience it as a player tosee if I want to do it as a GM). As I understand it, you can show up without a character and get a pregen even if the scenario is not for 1st level. Is that true? And if so, is it better to do that, presuming I don't really are about having an ongoing PC? What are the advantages of having your own character versus using a pregen?

Tangentially: what do I need with me besides event tickets? Do I need a membership card (I know I joined a while back) or anything else? Thanks.

Yes, there are pre-gens for 1st, 4th, and 7th levels.

Personally, I much prefer running my own character as opposed to a pre-gen. You get more attached to your character so tend to be less reckless and thoughtful. You also know your abilities more, so you aren't taking forever figuring out what powers you have or how to attack and generally tick off others at the table.

Tangentially, maybe not your membership card, but at least know your Society number. And if you want to play pre-gens, maybe bring the pre-gens in question? Just in case the GM doesn't have them on hand? Just a thought.

Here is a link to the page with the pre-gens. They are listed on the free download section. Player Resources

Also, just because I don't always read what people mean; if you haven't played Pathfinder society before you can only play upper level tables with a pre-gen.

If you have a PFS number, you should take it along, though it doesn't have to be on a card. A miniature, dice and some means to keep record sheets safe naturally might be helpful.

Advantages of having your own PC, rather than using a pregen:

Knowledge, knowledge, knowledge.
You will understand the powers and abilities of a PC you built much better than you will of a pregen, unless you have spent almost as much time working over the pregen as you would building your own PC...

Also, as to having a continuing PC, and taking GM credit for games run, is so that having someone else do a "guest GM" spot works much bnetter if you can just pull out a legal PC that is in the same level range as your regular players, so you can get the benefit of not GMing that session. ;)

Dice, mini, pencil and scratch paper, character sheet.
