Reserved name limitations

I read that there will be some limitations on name choices. I realize famous characters fromfrom video games. and the like will be out of the question but what sort of names will be allowed?

IIRC they noted you can do first and last names, no famous names from other IPs and they are trying to figure out you can/can't use from Golarian.

I'm not at my home computer and thus can't easily find it, but there was a developer blog discussing names. I believe "bad names" included obvious anachronisms and names designed to spark strong (usually negative) emotions in others - the examples given were Jesus and Hitler - as well as famous people and copyrighted/trademarked names.

The blog also indicated that all names should be considered probationary until approved; I'm guessing since we will be reserving names prior to the game's release that the reserved names will end up being approved before release.

Also, do we just get one name reservation, or two? I know originally it was one, but that was before they added the Destiny's Twin enhancement.

I use a name from old warhammer novels. I'm sure we will see the usual goofball names. I like immersion in my games

IIRC we get 1 choice and 2 replacements should it be taken or rejected.

I'm hoping (If I play) I can get Ttam Sirrom. I had a Jedi in a Star Wars game and everyone thought it was a cool name. (Think about it for a minute)

Hmmm, I have read the name rules too. But I wonder how strict they plan to be with the use of names from other IPs? For instance if I made a name that sounded the same/similar but was spelled differently even if only by one letter? I mean at that point Im no longer using the exact name so there shouldnt be a copyright issue.

Lets take Richard Rahl from the Sword of Truth. What if I changed it to Richard Rawl? It seems to me like it would be ok, or are the devs that zealous with RPing/originality? This was just an example fyi.

The reason I ask is I do use the same name for all MMOs Ive played for about 10 years. But it is from another IP. So I'd still like to use it, even if that means changing the spelling.

I pull a lot of my names from classical literature, history and, various mythologies; do you all think those count as "famous"?

I'm considerably more cynical, given my experience in MMO's in general I'm expecting the majority of names to fall into the following categories.

1. Outright goofball.

2. XXXLegolasXXX, insert other famous name of choice.

3. Provacative, but not in a positive way.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Thought about it for a minute - and you clearly are a vampire.

But really people should not post the names they want in the forums, there are always griefers and if would be tragic to have the name blocked by another user.

If there are names that I detest the most, One letter dodges like this are high on my list.

Did the devs indicate if they have decided to allow two names ie, Jack Sprat, rather that one such as JackSprat?

I just hope there isn't a minimum number if characters for names. I would hate to not be able to use Hark just because it is only 4 letters.

Story for Lazar:

Spoiler:
Years ago, we had a friend running us through The Sunless Citadel. He didn’t like Shatterspike so he replaced it with a sword of his own creation. Thinking not quickly enough, he named the sword “Nardil”. Well we all knew where the name came from, and it led to jokes. Our Paladin, Heron had the sword and had been named ‘Kobold friend’ by the local kobold tribe in the scenario. So we’d introduce him as “Heron, Kobold Friend. Wielder of the legendary sword Nardil. No not Narsil that’s the other guy.
Then one day I googled Nardil
So it became “Side effects of wielding Nardil may include, dizziness, blurry vision, dry mouth, headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhrea, impotence…”

Pretty straightforward. Look at the variety of names here:

Pathfinder Wiki (lore/Canon)
Pathfinder Wiki (lore/Canon)

and you will get the idea.

How do I say this? I kind of understand your point of view, really. But Its not like Im talking about things like XXXSephirothXXX. So I dont see what I'm talking about being remotely as bad as that. And its not the end of the world, if the devs straight up say "No Way!" And I have an alternate name that is 100% original, that I can use if need be. I'd just rather use my old one.

That being said, I have two immidiate reactions to your opinion:

1) Im looking for fact not opinion.

2) The name I'd use is from such a niche IP I doubt many Pathfinder people would get the reference to even know the name is spelled wrong. Just a guess.

Greed, if the name you're using is not likely to come up under any radar and doesn't grossly clash with the setting it's not likely to be a problem. I do however reserve the right to put on /ignore all Elves named "Joe".

Keep in mind though that if the name you're going to crib off isn't as obscure as you think it is, the hammer just might come down some day.

I reserve the right to ignore elven Barbarians named Glorfinmad^^

Simon Tam?

I wonder how they'll do with surnames. Will more than one person be able to use the same one?

If was thinking Sirrom backwards spells Morris and Tram -> Matt, of course that can't really beat firefly.

@LazarX - Fair enough. But thats why Im asking. If its just a copyright issue, then changin the name a bit should fix the issue. If it is something more than that, then I'd like to know. That way I can just use my back up name and avoid a forced name change.

Ill give you a hint, its my user name. However, even though among a certain race for a certain game its syntax for a proper name is correct. No actual NPC exists with such a name:p

I am generally in favor of limiting anachronistic and immersion destroying names. Conversations like ...

James T. Kirk -> I draw my Great Sword
Barack Obama -> I laugh at your puny efforts

... would not exactly imbue with the impression you are living in a fantasy/medieval world.

From my experience though since they're talking about a single unified server, expect names like this to be the predominate part of your role playing experience.

Keep in mind that 90 percent of the players who come to this game will most likely have absolutely no interest in roleplaying whatsoever. That's about the pattern of every other MMO out there.

I think you might be over estimating how many people are going to play this game.

I think this game is going to attract a small group of RPers and free form PvPers looking for an immersive experience. If the game is executed well, I would see it growing from there. By that time the culture of the world will already be established. As opposed to the mad rush of strangers that end of moving on a month later.

I expect to see every single name in this game be roleplay style or else get reported and have a name change forced on them? Why? Because the devs have stated they will deal with immersion breaking names.

XXXLegolasXXX will have that name a few hours at most if the game allows him to choose it.

Salogel the long blonde haired elven archer may just get away with his name but that really won't bother me.

Alternatively to my current Goblinoid name, I would also like to explore the possibilities of using Pathfinder Lore/accepted naming conventions to come up with a Goblin name that is "world" appropriate. Any shove in the right direction would be helpful. I have an unhealthy obsession with all things Goblin.

Might I suggest the free adventure We be Goblins as inspiration?
