You would be greeted in the judge’s chambers by an approximately 6 ft. tall cleanly shaven man with well kept hair and inquisitive grey-blue eyes dressed in a conservative suit, a crisp white shirt and a discrete tie. A colourful t-shirt and a pair of jeans would be more likely, should you meet him outside of work.
The Grey One lives up to his name and wears a grey hooted robe with a white mask.
A few eyebrows were raised when James Banes II was accepted into a prestigious law school. After his string of gentlemen’s Cs in college his father the honourable James Banes I U.S. appeal court’s judge had to call in quite a few markers.
Once there the young man continued his unimpressive workload, with his grades suffering accordingly. His time was unevenly divided between his long time on/off girlfriend Charlotte Rivera, a new close friend James White and the pursuit of a law degree.
Charlotte and James had met during college and the second generation us citizen of Hispanic decent still intrigued him. To call their relation complicated was an understatement but their feelings for each other endured. Even with her degree in psychiatry and associated work, she refers to him as her most difficult patient; she is perhaps the one, who understands him best.
An important fraternity tapped James for membership due to his legacy, a mistake. His only real accomplishment was to force the recruitment of James White through. White was a former roommate and fellow law student of Banes. The young black man, born in the projects, was on a full scholarship and showed plenty potential. After his graduation White went on to an emerging career in local politics, hungry to some day raise to the national level.
With both his friends having graduated James was left with a failing law degree and horrible marks, a year behind schedule, much to the dismay of his father. The only bright point on a otherwise dark sky was his understanding and interest in constitutional law, where he excelled. Through the combined efforts of his girlfriend, his friend and a glowing recommendation from his professor of constitutional law he passed.
During this final year he found the nemesis of his graduation. One day while browsing through old texts in a small Massachusetts library, he found a wizard’s tome forgotten here for centuries. It seemed to draw him in, and he spend more time studying it – perfecting his incantations, than he had ever studied before.
The day came and he graduated as one of the worst in his class only his constitutional law carried him through and it was also his professor who secured a clerkship for him with a colleague of his father. As always his commitment to his work depends on his interest. He has become better but that book steals much of his time.
