7!
Thanks for the suggestion, Shadowborn!
My keep folder has 28 items in it. Where are they going to get the other 4? :-)

Still, using you 28' they actually need to find more than 4! Don't forget to pick some alternates should any of the top 32 drop out due to unforeseen circumstances.
Seven?! I've been doing the math wrong this whole time. I saw two day turnaround for round two and immediately stuck that in my head for how soon the top 32 would be announced. Whoops!
I never made my own top 32 list, so I guess it's back to the waiting game...
My greatest hits list has forty two entries. Y'all are picky.
James Raine wrote: My greatest hits list has forty two entries. Y'all are picky. My "Keep" folder ended up with 85 items in it. I included numerous items that the judges would have previously described as a "weak" keep. I'll sort them into a 32 item list and post it when allowed.

My keep at the end of voting has 52. I am now narrowing it down between them to try and get 32, but I think at least 10 can get a weak keep based on originality.

Herremann the Wise I had 140 items in my keep folder. That was a pretty loose number, though; a number of earlier items I realized I was being a trifle kind to, and a number of items that got dropped in my 'reject' folder started looking better after a couple of repeat viewings. In other words, there were probably 30+ items in the 'keep' file that weren't really keep-worthy, and at least a dozen or so rejects that not only were keep-worthy, but wound up winning out voteoffs against items from the keep folder along the way. I guess in judging terms those would be 'weak keeps' and 'weak rejects' there.
BUT the keep folder was only half of it; getting put there meant you were a good item that deserved some kind of acknowledgement, but the GREAT items got highlit in blue for easy tracking. Those were my superstar picks, and ultimately I had about 28 of those.

i didn't vote nearly as many times as some of you but I think I probably saw less than a dozen items that struck me as being superstar quality. maybe i'm just being too picky... and, of course, the judges know what they're doing and i'm sure they'll see hints of greatness which I have overlooked. many thanks to them for their hard work- and to all you voting machines with the crazy titles!
So, my hope now is that my item shows up on at least one of your lists! Well, being on the real top 32 list, of course, but having someone like my item would be nice as well.
I ended up with almost 90 in my keep folder. Though in retrospect that has more to do with my love of Gonzo amusement then the actual arguable quality.

Even if I don't make the top 32, you guys (and gals) need to share these lists you've been making! I want to know if my item found its way to these lists!
Also, I kinda wish I made a list as well.
I went back through my list, since I wasn't keeping track of what I voted for/against, and quickly make a short list and a longer list based solely on looking at the names of the items.
I ended up with 8 items on the short list, and additional 13 on the longer list for a total of 21.
For the rest, I either couldn't remember the item, or could remember the item and didn't want to include it.
Like many, I'll be curious to see how my list matches up. It'll be particularly interesting to see if there's any items that I disliked in the final 32. Also, since just now I only looked at the items post-reduction, I'll be curious to see how many made it into the top 32 that I saw only before the field was reduced. I'm betting there's a good chance of there being at least one.

I didn't think to keep a list, but I can't think of more than a dozen items I really liked. I voted maybe 6-700 times, so maybe I just didn't see them all.
Feros wrote: 5! I forgot the counting down in this post and previously read a post about a list of keepers...
Keeping in mind that Feros is a Champion Voter, I almost lost it thinking there were only 5 good items in this individual's opinion... ouch.
Luckily, I eventually saw the previous 6! and breathed a sigh of relief. I might still have a chance.
And like everyone else, I'd love to see people's tops in the hopes that mine might have survived the culling of a few.

I actually have 36 items that I thought were very good, and have a file with 30 that I actually keep. That said, arguments can be made against most of them. I only have 4 that I really think of as "Superstar."

Oh yeah, and while I think of it: 4!

Feros wrote: ciretose wrote: Can they just tell me I'm out so I can stop thinking about Archetypes... I'm right there with you, pal. I've been working on "archetypes" before Pathfinder existed for purchase; I just didn't have a cool name for them. However, they tended to be very long winded... and... well... No where near Superstar level. I haven't been able to break into the top 32 for a surplus of reasons so I'm hopeful this will be different. I'd like, very much, to give a true Superstar archetype a go. Everything's still in my head at this point.
Can it be Tuesday now? Please?

Actually, archetypes were called "kits" back in 2nd edition. They took core class features away and gave new ones in their place. The most elaborate of kits were those for bards, radically rewriting the way the core bard class worked. The complete handbooks (covering all classes and races) had scores of them. Paizo updated the concept for their version of 3rd. I initially converted some kits when 3rd came out, but most early kits could be duplicated with feat selection and so abandoned the practice. Paizo's take (creating whole new class features) is a great improvement.

(In the village square, the crowd has gathered. They anxiously mutter to themselves, scuffling their feet. Somewhere in the distance, a wolf howls.)
(A nervous young woman clutching a sheaf of numbered papers steps up to the podium. In a quavering voice, she announces into the microphone that due to budgetary cutbacks and the economic recession, 2! has been cancelled and the Superstar countdown will continue as per usual the following day. Sensing discontent from the crowd, she turns and vanishes, possibly through a dimension door-style effect.)
(The crowd slowly disperses. The exodus of bodies reveals a small child, wearing a t-shirt with an oversized purple 2! on the front. He clutches a handful of limp helium balloons, the strings held slackly in his tiny hand. A single tear runs down his cheek.)

Really, 3rd edition had "Alternate Class Features" which are pretty much the same thing (Paladin of Freedom/Tyranny/Slaughter for example) - Paizo just did it better :)

Clark Peterson wrote: It's easier to over-keep and toss them out later then it is to go digging back through the trash for that one item that you thought was only ok but is looking better and better by comparison. Agreed, though one advantage of the fan voting format is the one item that is looking better and better by comparison is doing so because it KEEPS APPEARING. So much easier for us than for you guys in years past. (At least for those of us who kept notes.)
I just finished a final alphabetical list of all the items I saw (gearing up to create a 'my personal top 32' list), and there were definitely more items in the keep file that were less than worthy than reject items that deserved a second chance, though. (More than I'd previously noted; most of these were items I saw once so had fallen off my radar.)
And somehow there were seven items that made both my keep AND reject folders. Not sure exactly how that came about, aside from the fact that I either have a fickle mind, or was letting the judging go to my head. "Oh, so it's you again, my little plaything. I spared you before. Shall I do so again? Well, BEG. BEG FOR MERCY. No? Then INTO THE FIRE WITH YOU!"
That's what I always told the newer judges each year (no need this year). They are looking for the "wow, knock my socks off" item and I tell them, you only get about 6 to 10 of those a year. Then about 10 more really, really good ones. So don't over-reject. Its better to over keep and prune later than it is to rummage around for that item you kinda liked. We judges set our standards SO high. And think about the language we use: "weak keep". That means weak keep in the pile of items out of a thousand or more items. Our keep pile is usually no more than 5% of the total submitted items. Then within that pile we divide into strong keep, keep and weak keep. But again, weak keep within that group. That is an elite group. Its like barely making it into a special forces unit, you are the best of the best and you made it in. Who cares if you were on the bubble with a couple other people for the spot and you were picked. I think that transparency of our selection last year and that language put some people off and made it seem like a weak crop (which it wasnt). But this year the quality at the top is deeper than I've seen it before that I can recall. I hope you all agree.
My 28 item keep list pretty idiosyncratic. I would be surprised if all of them made the top 100 votes, and shocked if even the majority of them make the final 32.
But what I got out of it in the end was a solid sense of what it is that I personally like. That was the real benefit of digging through what must have been nearly the entire list of items. My taste is now well set.

Well, I took the opportunity before the contest moves on to submit my 3rd PFS quest today. And if I don't make it to the top 32, James Sutter can expect an email from me about writing some fiction for him. So don't just waste your time waiting!

Well, I'm going to have to leave the hour countdown to others. It's midnight here in Atlantic Canada and my cats are informing me that I shouldn't still be up (well, Channey is trying to enforce this. She is a stickler for schedule. Pepi could care less.) So good luck keeping the countdown going! I'll see you guys tomorrow!
