Stonelord

Advice

I was trying to build a Stonelord last night because I liked the flavor of it, but penalty to CHA is difficult to ignore. Any suggestions?

I thought that stonelord replaced practically every paladin ability that relied on Cha. (With the exception of LoH.)

Yeah, you don't really need CHA for the archetype at all.... Not sure why you're thinking it's hard to ignore.

The only thing Cha affects for a Stonelord is the number of Lay on Hands that he has. My suggestion is aim for a straight 10 in Cha (12 before racial modifiers) if possible and you will be fine. The loss of a couple Lay on Hands uses per day is offset by the natural armor bonuses and damage reduction anyway.

Exactly this. If you feel like you really need a few extra LoH uses take the Extra Lay on Hands feat.

I thought that too but don't you need CHA for spells and such.

The only questions for this archtype to me when building my char was which weapon to give the pet. I like reach weapons so I went with a boarding pike :)

I suppose that I didn't adequately investigate this.

Which attributes would you want to boost, STR and CON? Maybe STR, CON, WIS or DEX?

Depends on what you want to do. You don't have Divine Grace and your Defensive Stance is CON based, I believe, so STR and CON should probably be your primary. Dex might be worth considering since REF is going to be your weak save. It'll also help if you want to boost your damage by doing something fun like Two-Weapon Fighting with a greataxe and boulder helmet or something similar.

remember that mid combat your likely to be unwilling to drop defensive stance, so a bow or something for when the enemies have moved away from you is a good idea.

As the stoneservant (I guess you meant that when you said pet) has no weapon proficencies, do you think it will be any use to give it weapons?

Elemental Subtype: An elemental is a being composed entirely from one of the four classical elements: air, earth, fire, or water. An elemental has the following features.

Immunity to bleed, paralysis, poison, sleep effects, and stunning.
Not subject to critical hits or flanking. Does not take additional damage from precision-based attacks, such as sneak attack.
Proficient with natural weapons only, unless generally humanoid in form, in which case proficient with all simple weapons and any weapons mentioned in its entry.
Proficient with whatever type of armor (light, medium, or heavy) it is described as wearing, as well as all lighter types. Elementals not indicated as wearing armor are not proficient with armor. Elementals are proficient with shields if they are proficient with any form of armor.
Elementals do not breathe, eat, or sleep.

This hulking, roughly humanoid creature of dirt and stone explodes up from the earth, faceless save for two glowing gemstone eyes.

Just some food for thought.

This has been discussed on the forum before, indeed I was the one to ask whether this means that the stone servant is proficient with all simple weapons and have been told no.

The reason was that roughly humanoid =/= generally humanoid.

Actually, this doesn't have to be the case.

At level 6, the Stonelord gets a mercy (all other mercies are swapped out by the archetype), and one of said mercies removes fatigue. If the dwarf needs to get to the other side of the battlefield, he can end his stance as a free action, lay on hands himself to remove his fatigue, then head over and re-enter the defensive stance with no penalty.

unless there was an official response, I'm pretty sure "generally" humanoid form would count for a critter that's described as roughly humanoid. It's at least always humanoid looking, which always is seems to fit the criteria of "generally humanoid in form"

I mean, even definitions Merriam-webster...

Quote:

Definition of GENERALLY

: in a general manner: as
a : in disregard of specific instances and with regard to an overall picture <generally speaking>

b : as a rule : usually
Synonyms: commonly, naturally, natch [slang], normally, ordinarily, typically, usually

Quote:

rough·ly adverb \ˈrə-flē\

1
: in a rough manner: as
a : with harshness or violence <treated the prisoner roughly>
b : in crude fashion : imperfectly <roughly dressed lumber>

Synonyms: about, around, like, more or less, much, near, plus or minus, approximately, say, some

As a rule, elementals have a humanoid form. I see no cause to believe they aren't proficient in simple weapons. Specifically as the "if generally humanoid" is proficient in simple weapons comes in the category relating to elementals. Air Elementals of course aren't because they have no humanoid descriptor...

Specifically out of the elementals that the subtype rules are referring to, only one is referred to as even looking humanoid. If it's not proficient, why even mention it?

What source material can the Stonelord be found in. The d20pfsrd didn't seem very thorough. I want to read a more detailed description.

The exploration aspect has some interesting flavor. What does the higher INT serve? More skills only?

Enough Skills for the 4-5 Skill Points needed for effective Exploration.

Acrobatics, Climb, Perception, Survival, Swim.

a 6th could be needed for Stealth.

Any feat progression suggestions for the stonelord paladin?

I wonder if investing in a Trip build would be a smart route to take. Once you are in your Stance your CMB would be off the charts and you want your enemy right in front of you when you enter the Stance.

Knock his butt into the dirt, smack him when he stands up, smack him and kill him next round.

So, Combat Expertise then Improved Trip, then perhaps Extra LOH or Improved Inititive at 5th?

I'm more of a proponent of Sunder for Stonelords (built-in adamantine-busting Stonestrike! and who doesn't take Power Attack on a melee Paladin?) but Trip could work pretty well, too. I just don't like the Combat Expertise requirement to take it.

I quite like the following as Stonelord feats...

Power Attack
Cleave
Goblin Cleaver
Orc Hewer
Great Cleave
Darting Viper
Steel Soul
