Announcing Pathfinder Online: Pit Fight!

Pathfinder Online

CEO, Goblinworks

We just announced a special combat testing tool that will be available in Fall of 2013!

Goblin Squad Member

Very cool! Seems like a great way for those who are into the intricacies of combat mechanics to really work on it.

Goblin Squad Member

And I'll get into the game actually knowing how to fight in the game, making me feel a lot less likely to be immediately killed on day one.

Is this open or is it for Kickstarter backers, out of curiosity?

Very cool! A mini lab for the combat system, great idea! :)

Awesome tool to see and use! I am going to be looking forward to it, and hope that we will be able to do it with guildies as well!

Goblin Squad Member

Color me impressed.

Wow! Excellent!

Any word on a Character Generator?

Goblin Squad Member

I presume this is only available to Kickstarter Backers?!

Players will be able to see what aspects of combat they most enjoy and plan their advancement path once Pathfinder Online launches.

Apart from sounding very fun and (part of the crowdforging process), it should help with the skill-training system, I think.

Very good announcement directly strikes at the heart of the mmorpg!

Goblin Squad Member

excellent idea!
I hope you will also use it to collect data on how players fight and use it to balance and refine the combat system. Maybe even teach the AI some tactics?

Goblin Squad Member

It didn't read to me like it would be limited to Kickstarters. Possibly I am an incautious reader.

I should probably wear safety goggles.

Goblin Squad Member

Some folks asked on the kickstarter.

Is pit fighter backer only or open to the public?

Silver Crusade Goblin Squad Member

I love the idea, whoever came up with it deserves a cookie.

Cookie? How about the bakery. It's an amazingly insightful realization that the modern player base (especially coupled to the P&P scene) will rip into any mechanics like wild dogs, better to let them do it and aid your development then keep it close to the vest and end up with all kinds of broke stuff *cough* Mass Effect 3 MP *cough*.

Great idea. I can't wait to see it!

Unless they go out of their way to add in a login system and cross-reference that with backer emails I would assume it would be open to the public. Not to mention the more open it is, the more test data they recieve, the better combat becomes.

Goblin Squad Member

This is a great idea, talk about taking crowdforging seriously. :)

CEO, Goblinworks

@All - we're not exactly sure who will be able to access it yet. Anyone in either Kickstarter with Goblin Squad membership for certain but we would like to get it into as many people's hands as possible.

Goblin Squad Member

That covers me and mine :)

Goblin Squad Member

Did anything ever come of this? I have yet to not read a blog post the day they're released, and I keep in all of the right channels, but I can't remember them ever mentioning this again.

CEO, Goblinworks

Nothing to report at this time.

Goblin Squad Member

@Mr. Dancey,

Is it possible that this idea will not be realized, that resources will be best used elsewhere?

Or do you still want and intend to go forward with this, once the time is right (like when you have all four combat roles programmed and ready)?

Or have you not discussed the merits of Pit Fighter enough in the team to make any statement?

-------------------------------------------
I don't think anyone wants you to delay launch of the game over this. The idea was that we could help you with playtesting and balancing by providing input on the combat system? If it seems like not worth the trouble then go ahead and scrap the idea.

Goblin Squad Member

There are surely evolving mechanics involved in the combat system that will have to be finalized before the pit fight demo can even be designed in pseudocode.

Best to factor that when we set our expectations. The devs cannot know, only estimate, how long the process will take until it is pretty much done.

WOW... what a necro-thread tease... Heinous flag, heinous flag, heinous flag!!!!!

Just kidding, it is a legitimate question.

Goblin Squad Member

Seriously, I was all like EARLY CHRISTMAS PRESENT FROM GW and then I was all like NM JUST A HEINOUS TEASE.

Goblin Squad Member

/sigh

Goblin Squad Member

I was very excited for about 2 seconds until I started looking at the dates...

Goblin Squad Member

Um...I can't find it.

fall comes late this year, be patient and blame global warming.

That old 'Pit Fighter' announcement has already served it's intended purpose: To entice a few more people to pledge by making them think there could actually be something to try within the same year.

As it stands now, I figure both 'alpha' and 'pit fighter' will happen around the same time, serving as a glorified stress test for a week or a few just before the launch of EE. So-called alpha pledges will get to run around and randomly murder one another, while everyone else literally gets dumped into a pit with some rusty daggers with which to randomly murder one another.

Goblin Squad Member

Sorry, guys, didn't mean to get anyone excited with just a necro.

I understand that making a game is a very complicated and long process, but just about everything we've seen has been, "We're right on schedule." but we never got an update on this, so I kept assuming this was still in the works. I realized Fall 2013 actually ends in a few days and was hoping to get something, even if I know from the blog posts there would be very little content, but we still could have used an announcement or something saying that this was scrapped or pushed back.

Goblin Squad Member

No apology needed Ven, it was a valid question. Or so say I, but then again who is Being?

Goblin Squad Member

Actually the pit fighter tool seems more important than ever since it really doesn't look like there will be any way to practice combat in game.

There will be PVE stuff to fight in-game, that could be "practice". However, I admit I was looking forward to playing with the combat system before EE begins to get to know the various combos and such.

This does remind me of stretch goal: Gnomes.

I dunno about you but I'm expecting Gnomes in EE.

Since the minimal product blog in June I've been surprised that people still have expectations.

Goblin Squad Member

Sometimes the ability to be right on schedule is because items that are less critical to the finished product are re-prioritized and shifted around. The question is, would you like to see Pit Fighter in early 2014 if that means pushing back the start of EE to sometime in 2015? That may not be the exact trade-off here, perhaps they still have plans under their hats to get this out without impacting EE delivery. But from my experience, these forms of "feature cuts" are frequently necessary to stay on schedule.

I would argue that Pit Fighter isn't very important at all. It would be nice to play with, but I do not see how it would be considered part of the MVP outside of having been promised.

They won't have EE until they have everything needed for pit fighting any way, and pit fighting is how thy supposedly will tweak the combat system before EE.

Or such was my understanding. How much of that is a projection f my imagination I can no longer tell. Myth? Or Fact? You be the judge!

Goblin Squad Member

I have no problem if they push back EE a few months if they need it to setup more of the base features of the game.

That's not true, really. The combat mechanics are just one part of everything involved in EE. All of the environment mechanics, the persistent servers, plenty of stuff required for EE are not required to drop a generic arena background, the most current version of the available classes, and some simple monsters that just try to run and attack you into a client that works with a significantly smaller amount of servers that you would need others.

Like I said, I'm not irate or anything like that, I'm completely understanding on the development process, but I personally would like more than just a "Nothing to report at this time." Can we find out why? Is this still on the list? If not, why not? Is there anything specific that's we're waiting on?

I don't really care about specific questions, but Fall 2013 has pretty much come and passed, and nothing ever came of this. Crowdfunded projects should have more transparency on this sort of thing and be more proactive on announcing and explaining delays if pieces must be scrapped or delayed.
