In the rules it says, "Regardless of the shape of the area, you select the point where the spell originates, but otherwise you don't control which creatures or objects the spell affects. The point of origin of a spell is always a grid intersection."
Please refer to the picture. Are either the Red or Purple cones legal?

I would say red yes, purple no.
However, I'm not sure that's correct. I can't come up with a rules reason why the red (diagonal) template can stick on any corner but the purple (straight) template can't.
The best I can give you is SKR's post here which doesn't seem very helpful (other than general advice to use the templates pictured instead of trying to count out squares).

I think it follows the rules, but neither follow the intent. So, it's technically correct.
I believe the point was to have the diagonal templates come from your corners and the "straight" template as Grick put it comes from your sides.
Ultimately, though, this is just one more reason why I hate battlemaps--if this were done free-form, there wouldn't be any questions like this (it would only be "they're spread out too far" or "yeah, you can hit them both").

personally i like battlemaps, but ones that use hexes instead of squares, like the hero system.
