Sovereign Court 3/5

If you recall there was an issue with a season 4 scenario

scenario name:
The Sanos Abduction
giving you access to a normally banned
improved familiar candidate:
faerie dragon
. there were questions of if it would count as one of the 'special ones' from the FAQ on the subject of improved familiars and what they could do and wear.

You mentioned in this post that they could, and that the FAQ would be updated, but it never was.

As my character that this affects is going to be level 7 soon, (and this familiar will take over most of what he will be doing in combat, because he's an old man and shouldn't be out adventuring like some young whippersnapper) could we get it added to the faq? Or at least make a post of some sort clarifying it and adding it to the 'Compilation of message board clarifications for PFS Rulings' sticky?

It would be appreciated, and once again thank you for all your hard work in cat herding :)

Respectfully yours,

This has been updated.

Thanks for the update!

A quick question: can Pseudodragons also use wands? Faerie Dragons and Pseudodragons definitely have a similar body structure and number of limbs, but pseudodragons are not explicitly called out as being able to use wands.

there are lots of improved familiars that look like they should be able to use wands, but cannot in pfs. most elementals are shown to be basically humanoid (with arms at least) and almost all the mephits, just off the top of my head.

i believe they limit it for ease of play, but that's just my guess. personally i think all (pfs approved) improved familiars should be able to use wands. but since two of the best (the imp and the lyrakie azata, or however its spelled) are already on the list, i don't think anyone is complaining.

Quick followup question: can the "Spells known" be changed, or are only the ones available in the Bestiary 3 available?

i would guess that the answer to this is PROBABLY no.

but, if i may make a suggestion from my own plans with my faerie dragon (i have 2 characters with the boon, and one is a rogue who is getting a familiar at level 12) is that it is ACTUALLY a sorcerer, unlike the other improved familiars with just spell like abilities, so it can use pages of spell knowledge which do not take up a slot, and for 1000g each you add a 1st level spell to his spells known. adds a lot of versatility for a non-caster.

No, spells known may not be changed.

the default creature is 3 HD. Familiar hit dice use player's level, does it gain sorcerer levels with increased hit dice? does that increase its spells known?

Its hit points are half the PC's hit points, and it uses the better of either its own or the PC's base saves, with its own ability scores. Its hit dice do not increase as the master levels up. According to the Core Rulebook, a familiar "retains the appearance, Hit Dice, base attack bonus, base save bonuses, skills, and feats" it had as a normal creature. If there's an effect that uses HD to determine its effectiveness (like sleep or blasphemy, you would use either the familiar's actual hit dice or the PC's (whichever is better) to determine the spell's effect on the familiar. But the familiar's hit dice remain the same.
