yes, the +5 limit is only for crafting.
i believe there is an upper limit of +10 for class/special-abilty added enhancements, but i'm not sure where that is stated.
or am i mixing that up with the limits for crafted enhancement-equivalent special abilities?
Nope, you had it right. Weapons and armor can't be crafted with a total bonus beyond +10, with no more than a +5 enhancement bonus. (As JJ already stated though, a Bane weapon functioning at +7 against it's designated foe is perfectly acceptable)

Ok so what about a +5 furious, elf bane, human bane weapon used by a barb vs a half-elf? +11 and extra 4d6 damage? What about the furyborn enhantment thrown in?
Careful with the Elf Bane Human Bane stuff. There's threads a mile long about the fact that there is no "Elf Bane" weapon property, there's only the "Bane" property, with a designated foe for the property, so Bane wouldn't stack with Bane.
A +5 Furious, Bane(elf, human) weapon would likely have a total of +9 to hit and damage in the hands of a raging barbarian striking an elf, human or half-elf though.

ok, good to know i had that part, but is there any upper limit on effective enhancement bonus (to attack/dmg)?, or can it scale to +20 or higher just by stacking class abilities, etc, on top of the base +5 allowed by normal crafting? (barbarians' furious enchantment would be another means of getting above the normal +5 limit)
